      I’m new to watching golf. Did it put Zalatoris at a disadvantage to let Matt Fitzpatrick go first (which took pressure off if Fitzpatrick) ? If so, then who made that decision? Was that a mistake by Zalatoris to make that decision ?

      @@aml1588 ok thanks. That makes sense. However, I was just wondering that if there’s a rule that the “farthest putt goes first”, then one would think (just by the odds) that 50% of Majors would end as it did yesterday: with the loser missing the putt. However, yesterday’s scenario seemed rare & it seems that most Majors end with the winner making the putt. (I’m a novice, so perhaps I’m just not observing it correctly)

    The golf is impressive but I find my attention frequently drawn to the gestures, outbursts and general demeanour of the US crowd, something which struck me when Mickelson won a major last year. The spectators seem to be in tensely animated anxious foment. Is a golf crowd a reflection of the stress in US society or just a clue to what's helping make it?

      It's the US Open. Doesn't get much bigger than that. Of course everyone is excited. It's not because it's a 'modern' thing. Look at footage of some of the British Opens in the 70's. They literally had cops running around on the fairways trying to keep the spectators in check. And we are talking about the so-called 'reserved' British public.

    • @indricotherium4802
      @indricotherium4802 2 года назад

      @@cscoetzee : Sure, I used to notice excitement, the happily excited buzz of crowds being present at a major sporting event.
      That is not how I described the feeling emanating from these recent US golf crowds precisely because that was not what I was observing.
      I was observing in the gestures, raucous outbursts and general demeanour a sense of over-animation, something stress induced controlling the mood (not for everyone there, I'm sure, but far more than the handful of neurotics who have always turned up to plague any event and massively big enough to stand out as a distinct feature).
      You may argue that my observations are mistaken but I know the difference between what I'm talking about and the picture you painted.

    Gutsy performance from Fitzpatrick. Didn't have 'A' game touch and stuck with it and didn't get too low. His approach shots landing 25-30 ft away from the hole on quite a number of greens probably wasn't what he was looking for and some of his putts went a bit far past the hole but still made pars on most of those despite not being gimme's. Looked like he was more accurate on back 9. Congrats and well deserved.
