- LEGO Ideas 21341 Hocus Pocus, the Sanderson Sisters Cottage is something I had never heard about prior to making this review so, it should be a fun one... Honestly though, its a LEGO set with an appeal far greater than just the Hocus Pocus fandom, LEGO Halloween or Medieval custom builders got an awesome product to expand their LEGO worlds!

It never really occurred to me that Hocus Pocus might not be a popular or well-known Halloween movie outside of the US. It’s like an annual tradition to watch it at some point in October.
Yeah I figured. On the other hand, Home Alone always airs on TV around December.

@@inspirer4763 They show it on TV every year here. I don’t think I’ve met a single person locally that hasn’t seen it at least once, but that’s also true for Home Alone, so I assumed they were both similar in popularity globally. Guess not!
It’s crazy to think other western countries have never heard of it, while here in the US, channels like Freeform and Disney devote entire days to a marathon of just repeating the film over and over 😂
@@lindsayssbm Here in Russia we have Christmas in January and it is celebrated very differently (Boring religious stuff). Yet Home Alone is an iconic movie that is watched my many before/during New Year celebrations.
Halloween however pretty much doesn't exist here, very, very few people are trying to mimic its portrayal as seen in western media, but that's about it, so a movie based on such holiday being unknown is expected I'd say.
It’s crazy how hard they went on this set given that half the lego fan base doesn’t even seem to know this movie exists
I saw it when it came out (on TV, not in the theaters) but of all the movies that came out in the last 30 years, Hocus Pocus was nowhere near the top of movies I'd say was worth basing a set on.
It’s a cult classic. And if they are going to make a themed set they should go hard, IMO.

It worked in LEGO's favour. I've never heard of this film (Australian, don't celebrate Halloween) but I love timber framed houses/mediaeval architecture and I intend to get the set.
Being a fan of Hocus Pocus I love this set, wich will fit perfectly next to my Medieval Smith house. However, I miss a proper zombie minifigure, as that character is quite relevant in the movie.
I agree completely, I have been looking around for a "zombie" mini-fig to complete the set and give Billy a proper representation, haven't found one as of yet, but some of the old Monster Fighters sets could be the best option.
I have not watched this movie but this is a definite must buy as it fits the medieval theme

Agreed, though when I consider buying this a little voice always says "I could get this or... another medieval blacksmith or medieval castle to alter into mocs with the additional bonus of figures that fit with the rest of my classic castle stuff"
Really the design but have zero attachment to the movie and can't justify the purchase to myself just for the building unless it's like 30+% off
I think why the skeleton cage isn't fully connected is to show it broke over the very long time it was hanging.
No, the only reason is that you can easily access the skeletons inside.
I grew up with Hocus Pocus. It was one of my favorite Halloween movies as a kid. It doesn't stand up quite as strongly as it did back then but the darkness and the humor in it always seemed like a good mix. It takes what could be a really terrifying story and makes it kid-friendly and funny. And obviously Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy make that film.

I haven't seen the movie ever, but as a Lego Castle fan it is an intrigueing model for sure!
I think one big factor that will make this set popular in the US is the nostalgia factor. Grew up watching this movie around Halloween and it's still a tradition to watch it every year! Definitely picking this one up.
This has been one of my all time favourite movies since I was a child so I was so happy to see this announced! I do wish they'd kept Billy and the roof the way Amber designed them but I'm really excited to build this and watch the movie with my kids.
Very unexpected must buy for me. I like the opening walls and a hinged roof. Lego should use them more often on their buildings.
I'll be honest, I do NOT like the movie but this set is dope. Gotta love a nice Medeval style house build. Could be cool in a MOC.
Reminds me of when someone I knew got the Big Bang Theory set, sold the figs and just used it for a Deadpool MOC
I have bought it for my wife and daughter to build. Hocus Pocus is a tradition in our house here in Scotland and they are looking to start it on Oct 1st, to have it ready for Halloween.
They are really excited about it!
Lego needs to hold a press conference to tell us why they deliberately left out Billy!!!!

My guess is he wasn’t that important in the first movie, and he’d need a new hair mold and they already made two specific hair molds in this set

Knowing Lego it’ll be an add on.
Still, I think the technique to open up this house is far too complicated, compared to the Ideas draft. But I like the chimney smoke effect. And the cat transformation guide ^^

Jokes aside, it's a great set with a spot on minifigures, but as always a little bit pricey!
I hope Lego will lean more into this type of actual complete buildings like with the Home Alone house before and not these half open display sets in the future
I am thinking of getting this to display next to the Medieval Blacksmith. Maybe I can sell the figures to make some money back since I really just want the building.

Not sure why they didn't have the two bullies, Ice and Jay, hanging in the cages like in the film. Unless the skeletons are supposed to be them, which is as bleak as the LEGO grave of a child character lol

Kind of like the original movie itself, which was released in July 1993 as opposed to the Halloween season!
You coud get a sale near halloween time and buy cheaper than retail price

Overall great set but I think it could have used two things
One the actual zombie instead of a reference
And two the station wagon that the kids use in the movie

I'm extremely tempted to pick this up and change out the colors to make into a more fitting "Witch's Manor" for Willa the Witch
I love the set, but the exclusion of the Billy Butcherson was a disappointment. There was a lovely opening grave for him in the original submission.
Reminds me of how Grover was omitted from the final rendering for the Sesame Street set :(
Or how the Doctor Who set hot rid of Rose, Sarah-Jane and the 10th and 4th Doctors in favour of the 11th and 12th

Wow, so interesting this movie hasn’t spread far in other countries! I hope this will become a new classic Halloween movie for many. It’s a bit cheesy yes, but very fun and great for the kids!
The gate is for the cemetery, where the final showdown takes place
one thing to note on this set. it appears both sides of the roof are meant to hinge, but the chimney prevents one side from actually opening.
It looks awesome ! A set I will hopefully be picking up.

Hocus Pocus is pretty much the "Home Alone" of Halloween!
It's a cool looking build although not as recognizable as some other movie themed sets.
I honestly don't mind sets that are specific or popular is certain areas. Like popular U.S. movies, European movies, etc. I think it's a great way to get people into new "foreign" things
Love the movie but I don't remember the skeletons though. And instead of two of the skeletons it would've been cool getting mini figs of the two bullies that tormented max. If you remember they were captured by the sisters and put in the cages as prisoners.
I think it's a morbid reference to the two bullies
If you put one and two together, you can find out, what’s up with the skeletons, in that case.

seeing as how there is now good Mocs for an entire Village out of the black smith Ideas set, i could only imagine what kind of wonderful mocs we'll see pop up on rebrickable from this. as a lego castle fan only the roof i think looks out of place but thats easily enough modified.

As a film buff with 10,000 films under my belt, I was aware of Hocus Pocus, but I dismissed it as trash, because it was a film that Americans were obsessed with.
And I'd seen stills from the film, which I didn't like. It looked cheap and boring. Something that was aimed at kids.
Then my girlfriend apparently loves this film, so she forced me to watch it last Halloween. And......I loved it, too! It's really dumb, but extremely entertaining.
So when we discovered the Lego set, it was a no-brainer. Beautiful build. Decent price. Why not?
I want like a medium size set now that’s based in the cemetery with extra fencing featuring Jay and ice another max/binx and Billy butcherson.

I never knew people didn’t know Hocus Pocus! Best Halloween movie ever! My set is on the way…cannot wait until it gets here! My only complaint is that they didn’t include a Billy mini fig.

This was out of stock online already- Hocus Pocus is a popular and a classic Disney film in the US- but got to the Lego store on Sunday for VIP members and got the Disney 100 GWP, also out of stock online. Success!
I haven’t been able to afford new Lego sets since my job closed our office due to Covid permanently but I’ve loved still watching all your reviews. The gingerbread house is my favorite Christmas set and among my all time favorites up with Disney Castle, Hogwarts Castle, the Haunted House (with you referenced 😉 in tombstone form), and I’d say the Super Mario Bros NES set. I’ve always enjoyed seeing your opinion as you were a really damn incredible designer. Keep it up and stay well.
Also… I’m very familiar with Hocus Pocus and LOVE the movie. Its interesting hearing you as someone not familiar review the set. Hopefully when I find a new job I can get this (among many other) sets haha

Is the chimney side of the roof supposed to open? It has the hinges, but the chimney keeps it from opening correctly without removing or leaning the chimney.
Not supposed to be opened no. The build is similar to the roof on the other side as you mentioned

I will never understand people's apprehension towards themes/sets they aren't familiar with, like it's a negative mark against them or something. So many comments (and the reviewer) qualifying their opinion with "iVe nEVeR hEaRd oF tHiS tHiNg BefORe lol wHaT iS tHiS i dON't gEt iT tHIs mAKeS nO sEnSe wHy wOuLD tHeY dO tHIs, aNyWaY..."
Yeah, like I’ve never watched Seinfeld but I’m not gonna hate on Lego for picking that over the Community set, Mystery Science Theatre 300 or Red Dwarf, just be happy some fans of a product get one of their favourite properties in Lego form

It’s so strange to see people not know about this movie, especially outside of the US. Regardless here in America it is one of the most heavily marketed Halloween movies there is, you can’t go into a store, much less a Halloween store, without a ton of merchandise for the movie, so the McDonalds people will definitely eat this set up.
I guess it's like that movie with the kid with the glasses that's played constantly on TV in the US at Christmas but which was clearly so unfamiliar to me here in the UK that I can't even remember the title!

Christmas Story is just a movie in the UK, you can get it on DVD and it recently got a 4K release but nobody actually talks about it, he’ll I’m pretty sure I once heard a radio presenter over here act perplexed and confused when she heard they do that 24 hour marathon of the movie over in America

I certainly have seen some promotional material of the movie, but have never seen it and probably never will. And as a result I can't say I'm interested in the set. It does seem like a good build though, although I would absolutely hate the number of stickers used here. And this video also shows why I always do an effort to hide mould marks whenever possible....

The S on the graveyard gate is for Salem, a town north of Boston in Massachusetts. I'm eastern European myself, and everyone I know knows and loves Hocus Pocus, we've kinda adopted Halloween, especially the movies and stories asociated with it for the theme and aura of the season around Samhain, which I know, is also not eastern European, but All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead are, and all these elements for us just come togther for an awesome Autumn vibe.

I've never even heard about this movie. If not for the Lego set i would probably not know it existed to my death.
All I want are the minifigs of the 3 witches
Neat Idea, the house has been left close enough to the movie to make it recongnizable, "has been left" because the original Ideas submission is way closer to the source material. They nailed it with the minis tough (which in the end is the only usp that Lego has left), yet I miss at least Billy. For once, no weird colors seem to have been mixed into the set, I suppose mainly because they woulb be visible. What I can not understand: The set comes wit a hefty price tag of 229 euros (~180€ price in store), for this amount of money i expect to have things like the door, the gravestones etc solced by printed pices, not stickers...
In USA and have never seen this movie. Only see it discussed in disney forums. Like the detail in the set though.
tiago needs to review the star wars mechs as soon as they come out i can wait to see the new boba fett minifigure.
For anyone curious why Billy Butcherson wasn’t included, apparently that was Disneys call, not Legos.
Any word on why Disney didn’t permit him? Cause the character is very popular within the fanbase, leaving out Jay and Ice makes sense but why Billy?
