I think that, of the 50 or 60 "Totem videos" I watched this is the best!
What a great video on making a mushroom kit really last!
Thank you!
I like this. Any reason one could not bore a hole through the center to help speed this up and let logs set together better?
I use the totem method over the bolt method to avoid drilling and lifting. My totems are much wider, bucked 6 inches, much higher and on a pallet. Never moved. in reach of several garden hoses linked together. Do mostly shiitake.
In your video it shows to top of the log looks like there are drilled holes the oyster mushrooms are growing our of. Did you inoculate as well? Thank you for the informative video.
Hello. I plan to grow oyster mushroom using totem method. I read and watch many others demonstrate this method. However, no one has mentioned about the second flush, second years/season, of the totem. What is your experiences with the life expectancy of the totems and their multiple years and seasons production. Thank you very much.
Could I ask a question. I'm planning on planting gold oysters in some aquarium driftwood I have, as part of my paludarium 4 foot tank. You said you can't use old wood, but this wood has been used by me for sometime in my aquariums and I plan on boiling the crap out of it prior to using it again. Would this render it safe for mushrooms, as there would be no chance in hell that it would be carrying any spores or anything else?
how did the test come out? i noticed that the video recording where we saw mushroom growing on a log had holes in it, as if they were inacolated (spelling?) with more commonly used spore plugs
Can you use spent mushroom sub from my grow room? I go for 2 flushes but I know the myc is still live.
Can we use the logs are already cracked, they cut down less than 3 months and it is Florida oak logs ?
that's nice
here's a few suggestions worth trying
choose the best variety - there are lots available.
grow them in the right conditions - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid areas and can be placed outside (I discovered these and why they work from Gregs Mushroom Grower site )

Will oysters grow in humanure piles made of sawdust?
Jim, Thank you for all your vids and your mushroom kits! Just one quick Q: After I have inoculated the totems using the method in this video, and placed them into the black garbage bags on a raised surface, HOW OFTEN DO I WATER THEM? DO I WANT TO HAVE SOME STANDING WATER IN THE BAG? Thank you SO VERY MUCH!
+Andrew Duhaime Andrew, leave it undisturbed in the bag for the first three months then remove it from the bag, soak the log once a month if there is no rain. Be sure there is no standing water (contaminant vector) in bag. Happy Growing!
+100thMonkeyMushrooms Great, thank you! I was concerned because the Oyster mushroom kit I received was still moist when I inoculated the totems. However, the shiitake block that I used and harvested twice, then used to inoculate the totems was very dry. I wasn't sure if it would initiate growth without added moisture. I will make sure to follow these instructions. And oh, I used Poplar for the totems :)
Have you ever had success with gray and golden oysters on oak logs?
Won't the mushrooms get infected or eaten by snails or insects when it grows out of the log?
wow, it can survive over 5 years?
but after 3 months of inoculation, is the mushroom can harvested every day from one log, or just can be harvested every week, or maybe every month? and how much the average weight of mushroom from one log?
by the way, if you allow it, I will share this video on my blog.
Thank you.
If the conditions are right (temperature, humidity, shade) the logs can produce in
6 - 8 week intervals.
Dang we do not have hardwood in Boreal Forest
Birch? Wold that work?
