Thank You. I volunteered at the Santa Cruze Mushroom FestivalFestival It was great fun to see how many small businesses are utilizing these little miracles. I got some blocks with grown mushrooms, thought there would be some instructions... You're my instructor. Thank You
THANK YOU!!! I have been interested in growing mushrooms for a few years now but was afraid to try. This has been the most helpful of all the mushroom videos I have seen - and I've seen a lot of them! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I needed it spelled out for me step by step like this. Mushroom Farming here I come!!!
Thank you for a great video. Please keep them coming.
Thanks! Very straight forward. I'm excited to start.
Love love love the video!! Your very low key, but powerfully informative !!! Great job!!!
its not many times i am surprized but this video really caused me to think but have you checked out the website called Gregs Mushroom Grower look for it on google
Great video, loaded with information... and the presenter was very informed. Can't wait to start !
Thank you for the feedback!
Excellent video, thanks!
WOW this video got me so excited, and know I wanna grow mushrooms!

Great video, very informative, person like you are an asset on youtube! thanks!
+olibrius9 Thank you!
Good video and I’m going to see if I can find a kit to grow some beautiful shiitakes 😁👍🏽.. I live on North BC Coast but hope I can get a kit from the plant nursery 😊
Thank you so much for the great video 🙏🏻
Excellent straight talking and informative video. Thanks.
David63190 You are welcome and thank you for watching!
Wow, a whole new world of mushrooms, ideal for me as I am getting older and cannot dig the garden. Have plenty logs too for the wood burner. Thank you, you have a lovely way of presenting your passion.
Pauline, Thank you! Be sure to use freshly cut logs (a few weeks to a few months old) from a healthy hardwood tree.
Thank you for this info! I had NO idea.
+Pat Walker And that is just the beginning....
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great video.. I've bought a mushroom kit in the past from a different company but really the didn't provide growing support like you have! I think I will have to buy one of your kits just for this reason!!! Love that you show how to start a log afterward.
Prachi, Thank you for your support. More mushroom growing videos coming soon!
great video, thank you for sharing! :-)
He looks just like that trey growdy guy from the Benghazi cmte!! Nice video thanks!
Great video, Thanks
Thank you!
Great info, get your web up soon ,ready to order kit...
Thanks. very helpful. Just harvested 1 kilo of shii take from one kit.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching.
NM the rest of the video just answered my question.
Nice video
Danny, Thank you for your patience. The web designer was having "coding and formatting" issues and the site should be up tomorrow (Tuesday, March 5, 2013). Thank you for checking back.
Great tip. "When the skirt drops it’s time to eat. "
Thanks for sharing this; very helpful! The thump is very interesting concept; could it be simulation of a fallen tree?
can you dehydrate them for longer storage?
if so, how long?
Subbed
Love the video! Couldn't find your website...
This is great! I accidentally put salt on my log because I had a penicillin outbreak on mine. Hopefully that salt doesn't kill production completely.
The mycelium is inside the log...rinse the salt, you should be fine.
Thanks for video wondering for long term to grow mushrooms there is no way to do it ourselves . Or we have to buy the mushroom kits ?
The mycelium does tend to sprout more after dropping it.
this is because The fungus confuses these vibrations with those of thunder or flooding
these are both signs to the organism that the season is right to produce their reproductive organs
I hope that's helpful,, thanks for all the great videos
The other reason mushrooms sprout as a result of sudden vibrations is because when a dead branch with mycelium growing in it falls and hits the ground it is introduced to many more organisms that want to eat that wood . The fungus knows it's food source may be in danger . And it also knows that if it's on the ground the water sources are more plentiful
Veronica, Step 5 is to strip the bag from the block, place it on a plate with a humidity tent over the top and start misting. Good luck!
Could the removed mycilium be used to inoculate another culture?
In my country, we do not have oak log. What character is required for shiitake log? We have pines log tough. Can I use it? Thanks
Amazing! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. 2 quick questions: you put the sawdust in the bucket of water w the mycillum for how long? The sawdust you then packed back into the drilled holes? Just wondering... with all the spores that are being produced at your your location, do you now have wild mushrooms growing on your property? With wind blowing spores all over your yard, I would imagine mushrooms everywhere, yes? Thank you for sharing your talent.
+Rhonda Ja In the video we suggested soaking the shiitake block in cold water for 4 hours. However, over the years we have found an 8-12 hour soak is better. When inoculating your own logs there is always a possibility that a different native species could populate the log. You must always be adept at identifying the desired species.
A friend has 10 or so of these kits and gave me one. The problem is there are mushrooms already growing INSIDE the bag. What steps should I take for this. Thank you.
Thanks bro I do not now about how to grow but brother what about hot places
Water can be quickly dechlorinated with a pinch of citric acid/ascorbic acid/vitamin C; given that Shitake like a lower Ph range anyway, that shouldn't be a problem. Plus, it should only drop the Ph for a short period of time before it jumps back up.
My kit is dated 1/5, so it's already almost 5 months old. You indicated that if you if the mushrooms have already began to produce in the bag that I should skip to step # 5. What step is that exactly?
Hi Jim,
is it possible to use hemp seed a small amount of rye spawn to multiply the spawning capacity ? I have some rye spawn for golden oysters (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) and Clamshell mushroom (Hypsizygus tessulatus) spawn sitting in my fidge but it is little and I worry if I mess something up I have no healthy spawn to play with.
regards, Sander
I this case I would suggest pasteurizing a few gallons by volume of straw in a clean container (not outdoors) and mix in your spawn. Be sure you will have a few months of 75 degrees plus temperatures. P.c. is a warm weather species.
We use to grow mushrooms, make block, and make 6 foot bags.. Was a lot of fun. Do you sell shitajiki blocks? Like 20 or 30 a week. I have a 400 sq foot clean room for fruiting . We have a farm and may get back into selling produce again. Remember I can't pay what most people want for blocks because when they fruit theres no profit to be made.
Can you use the mycelium that you took off the top to plant in medium that you can grow mushrooms in? I love this video. I got mine in the mail the other day. I still have 20 days to wait. So excited.
+Regina Leathers Yes, on logs. Watch this video to see how:

Great video! I bought a kit not on a whim b/c I love shiitake during a street fair. Now that I'm learning more, I see do not have a humidity tent. Is that ok? I already opened the bag, but was confused by an instruction step about working the surface with rubbing alcohol. Is that normal? Also, it supposed to smell so strongly?
tymeburglar86 Yes, need high humidity for maximum growth. No idea what is meant by the rubbing alcohol?? Yes, shiitake does have a strong smell. Good luck.
Ideal locations in the US to start a mushroom business?
Great videos, I'm thinking about getting into this. How many ounces can 1 block produce? Thank you
If all goes well...about 1lbs.
Your videos are great! I ordered a kit from another company and am not all that impressed. The bag did not look like it was full colonized. Hopefully it will still produce. It was a pink oyster kit, and you don't offer them, that's why I ordered from somewhere else. I wanted the pink oyster because it is said to be very, very easy to work with. Any chance of ever offering Pleurotus djamor?
Issac, We do not offer the djamor, in part, because it is a warm weather species and the mycelium will easily die in shipping if it becomes too cold (even the refrigerator is too cold for the pink oysters). Thanks for checking!
what should I do if I see small spots of green mold on my block? am I doing something wrong to cause this mold?
+Tabman4113 Most likely the block is too moist. Do not water the block itself, the important factors is humidity surrounding the block/mushrooms. Depending on the extent of mold you could try cutting the areas out or spot spray with hydrogen peroxide.
Should I take of the humidity tent once the mushrooms start to come up?
When the mushrooms come up...and until harvest...is actually the most important time to keep the humidity tent on.
Perhaps 'thumping' mimics the shiitake being walked on? Walking creatures are perfect dispersal tools.
I recently purchased a shiitake block kit from a local farmers market. It looks just like the one in this video but the instructions didnt mention the thump and I already placed it on the counter with the tent (after following the other instructions) it is day two and I can see the bumps of future mushrooms. My question is, is it too late to "thump" the Block? Thanks for all the cool tips!
+Kelly Nehring The thump is to initiate growth, sounds like yours have already started growing, so just enjoy the show!
+100thMonkeyMushrooms Thank you for the quick response! I will! I am already watching other videos of how I can extend the life of the block! I love the totems! Its so easy but I do have a toddler so screws for me! Thanks Again!
Hi, I bought kits from Etsy (2 different sellers--didnt know of your site before), and one seller sent me the wrong kits and another sent me 1 block in a bag, and 1 "log" which isn't an actual log but the mixed sawdust logs. Prior to buying, I asked the seller if I could use the kit outdoors, bcuz I don't have room indoors where there is light. She replied that yes, it could be, by cutting the bag on its side instead of the top, digging a hole in the ground, and putting it in the ground, and then lightly put dirt on it. I wrote her back after I received order (I bought a shittake and oyster) and asked again to confirm directions bcuz they were different than what she sent me. She said she was sorry and was wrong. The kit should remain indoors. So, now I have a shittake kit and oyster mushroom kit and nowhere to keep them indoors.
Is there a way I can keep them outdoors? In a Rubbermaid bin with holes? On hay? On dirt in a raised garden behind a fence?
Question, which tipe of mushrooms can I to grow on acacio logs ? thank You all.
I have heard a few report of shiitake being grown on acacia wood.
can you grow shitake in sacramento california? I am just getting into this and I would LOVE to grow some! Thanks
You are in a great place to grow shiitake indoor in kits and outdoor on logs!
I like the video. very useful... Do you have video of how to make a shiitake block using your own mixture, and their quantity.
No, we do not. Check out Paul Stamets book, "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms"
Jewel Castro
There are several things to try
choose the best type - there are lots available.
grow them in the best environment - some such as oyster muchrooms like cool humid areas and may be placed outside (I read these and the reasons they work on Gregs Mushroom Grower website )
I've done everything in this video and also on the instructions that came with my kit and nothing happened. Any suggestions?
+Renee Gerasimtchouk Let it sit for two weeks then try soaking it in ice water again.
Ok, thank you!!
everything u will need is a humidity tent? that's all, you don't need a humidifier and something air exchange? fanning. i'm fearful of fruiting oyster especially, and shitake. thanks
Jim, I made the mistake of buying a shiitake sawdust block kit from another company and it showed up in a dry, un-bagged state and without instructions or a start date. It does appear to have been colonized so can I still bring it back to life again? Thanks for your awesome videos!
It depends on how old it is and if it has already been fruited, but give it a try. Soak it over night in ice water and create a humidity tent out of a small clear trash bag with holes in it. You will know within a week after soaking if there is any life left. Good Luck!
100thMonkeyMushrooms Okay I'll try it and hope for the best. Thanks for the quick reply Jim. I will be doing my shopping on your website from now on!
This video has different instructions then the ones that came with the kit (such as kit doesn't say to place in fridge or cold soak if mushrooms are growing, only put tent over...which is correct?
+Renee Gerasimtchouk What company did you order from?
+100thMonkeyMushrooms - Amazon - order says from "Gallboys" but instructions say "M.C. from Delta, Ohio.." but they did include an insert which directed me to your video, so not paying attention to where it came from, I was following your instructions. (Awesome video btw !)
Despite what their directions might have said, nothing is more effective at initiating shiitake growth than cold water soak.
+100thMonkeyMushrooms I'll follow your directions, thank you!!
Sir, is it normal for the Shiitake to look the way they look in this video...They look kinda beat up...(No offence intended) Now that I come to think about it... I have seen this being beaten up look more often in Shiitake... How is that ? And can this beat up look be remidied if needed??
Regards, Sander
There are countless strains of edodes all having their own characteristics. Additionally, all react differently to temperature, humidity, light..etc.
what is web site? can you send me link? thanks
I would like to order kits from you where I can get in contact please
Thanks for sharing
Van Phongsavan See our website www.100thMonkeyMushrooms.com
Can you ship to Canada?
I live in Vancouver on the westcoast. Check out the Mushroom Man. Also, GardenWorks sells kits from the Mushroom Man.
can these be done in the tropics?
Shiitake is not very good for growing in tropical weather. It would be best to use a warm weather strain of oyster such as, pink or yellow oyster. Thank you.
in an airconditioned room that is humidified?...should that induce growth.....just interested in experimenting
Yes, that would work!
40-60 days? Damn, my bags take four to five months to get to 50% browned in bag.
you got to put them in the fridge for 3-5 days, (after the initial 40 days) and after soak them in water for 2-4 hours, to "initiate" them. (this is only if the browned spots havent formed yet)
Could you make plugs from this?
Do you mean using it directly to plug a log or to make dowels?
Both.
Yes, you can do both.
very cool. I will be contacting you with in the next few weeks. Do you have spawn ready to go?
We do have indoor shiitake kits and outdoor dowel (plug) spawn available. See our website at 100thMonkeyMushrooms.com
Thanks!
Thumping is to artificially create the falling of a tree
It’s NOT pronounced shitakii, it’s pronounced shitakeh.🙄
Good grief! You could have relayed this info in four minutes. Use an outline and script next time.
