  • Are you underutilizing Siri? We asked our Facebook fans about their favorite uses for Siri on their iPhone/iPad/Mac. Most people referred to the basic uses like using Siri to set a timer, but that little voice in your iDevice is capable of a lot more! Here's David's Top 11 (we couldn't come up with a clean number like "10") favorite Siri tricks.
    About Smart Home Products
There's a ton of different products in your home that can now be controlled by Siri. Here are a few of my favorites
    1. Lights. When it comes to lights, the two "big dogs" are Philips Hue and LIFX. I own both and after owning both for over a year now, I significantly prefer LIFX. Why? The colors are more vibrant, the LIFX app just does more than Philips Hue, and now that they're able to communicate with via HomeKit, there is no down-side that I can think of. LIFX bulbs also don't require a hub (unlike Hue). LIFX makes several kinds of smart lights. This link will take you to all of them: amzn.to/2qWeHWW
    2. Thermostat - While I wish I could use this one myself, unfortunately, I have electric heat (and no smart thermostats work with electric heat). There's several popular models. Here's a few:
    Nest: amzn.to/2ps9WTu
    Ecobee2: amzn.to/2q2YiAA
    Honeywell (lest expensive) amzn.to/2qnBChr
    3. Wall Outlets. (CORRECTION: The WeMo only works with Amazon Echo aka Alexa however I also have a link below to one which does work with HomeKit aka your iPhone) I personally own two Belkin WeMo units. These allow you to plug in any kind of appliance and then be able to control it remotely. Make sure to set the device into the "on" position so that it can be controlled via the smart plug.
    WeMo Link: amzn.to/2qWty3r
    KooGeek (works with Homekit) amzn.to/2ps2Xdp

My favorite application of Siri “stunts” is to combine with Geo Fences. “Hey Siri, when I go to the Hardware store remind me to buy a hammer.” You can keep adding to the list and when you approach the hardware store (you will have to give her the address 1st time) she will remind you of all the items you have on the list. OR - If you get home and realize you are low on gas and don’t want to forget to fill up; “Hey Siri, when I leave here, remind me to get gas.” She will remind you as you pull out of the driveway. Just two examples, there are a million more. BTW, you can expand or contract your geo fences to remind you of things as you approach them. And I suspect that if you combined WORK FLOW you could trigger all kinds of actions just by moving from one place to another.
Cheers and thanks for another terrific vid!

When I have long articles to read I will have Siri speak screen and read the article to me while my attention is elsewhere doing something else. This is an excellent feature, for which I do not have to go and find my glasses.

Great video!!! for number two, when at the grocery store.... I just ask Siri to show me my grocery list. It's a little wonky because she will read it to you and if the list is large, she will ask you to continue. So if you have embarrassing things on your list... beware. Lol

Awesome!! I use Siri all the time and for all the examples you said. (Though I need to start buying more home automation devices, but I love using it for my Nest!) Another use for Siri, if you don't want to have to go into the phone app to make a call that's not in your contacts you can say, "Siri, call (say phone number)" Its particularly good for longer 1-800 numbers!!

If interested let me know and I will give you more details. Anyways, awesome channel, keep up the great work.

Loved your top 11. I use many of those items listed too. Although, I'm often frustrated with Siri's limitations...or inconsistencies. Like, last week I was driving and I asked for driving directions to home. Siri replied, "I can't do that while you are in the car". What?! When else would I need it? I run into a lot of those scenarios

@Jan Čejka ... if Siri is enabled in the phone's settings, even if it's locked, all you have to do is push and hold the home button until Siri is activated, and then say "Who does this phone belong to?", and it will respond with the person's name, and it may also show any info that is associated with it (if that info was also saved to the owner's number/contact info section). The only way to stop that from happening, is to turn off Siri for when the phone is locked (it's one of the options under the Siri menu section), but Siri will still continue to work normally when unlocked. That way the person/finder/thief can still try the home button technique, but the phone will ask for the password before proceeding further.

The tip on using Siri to call 911 in an emergency sounds great, but on my iPhone 6 Plus, in Settings - Siri - "Allow "Hey Siri", it says "You can speak to Siri without pressing the home button by saying 'Hey Siri' when connected to power." That limitation seems unfortunate, as I usually don't charge my phone during the day. If I left the phone on the kitchen counter during the day, the feature would not be available if it were not connected to power.

This is one of the most useful videos I have ever seen, if it worked. Every time I ask Siri a question it always says "I found this on the web" Even if I start asking Siri to send a message, every time I stop for breath Siri assumes that I have finished speaking and starts with ."I found this on the web" Do you know if there any way Siri can be made to listen for longer? I currently have an iPhone 7 and I’m on iOS 11.2 but I think it is because I’m from the UK, we mostly don’t speak as quickly as most Americans I’ve heard. I have a standard accent as opposed to some of the faster provincial accents. I keep trying to speed up but it makes no difference what I do. Is there any way you can help? I would be very grateful.

Hey man, totally offtopic, but I heard you said you have ADD, so do I, but I was wondering, are you still on any meds or did you learn to cope with it somehow? I'm asking this, because I was looking at the way you were talking to the camera and you really seemed focused and your way of speaking seems to be really structured. When I tell a story I mostly just lose my train of thought halfway through, unless I'm really consciously trying to keep my focus. I'm trying to cope with it without using meds, but it's not always easy.. Always looking for tips.
