  • In todays escapades we take a quick look at how I go about colour matching when the Molotow rattle cans can't help me as well as a brief demo of how efficient an airbrush can be when it comes to repairs.

Im not sure what made me start watching board repair videos, but i gotta say despite now living in the middle of a landlocked desert these videos got me wanting to make some boards. Your vids are kinda like therapy, i havent glassed anything in sometime but it does bring back memories, getting it all laid up, wetting it down without distorting the weave, racing the pot life. Its a challenge that scratches the meticulous itch and i lowkey miss it.
Paddle boards are pretty popular near me, but i reckon i should research some surfboards for whitewater and i really want to try my hand at a few "river boards" to get people interested in the sport (very popular in NZ nobody in Colorado or most of the seems to know what they are, and we have white water heaven out here, they look like a jet ski hull had a love child with a boogie board lol)

Thats the beauty of RUclips, you find interesting things you never thought would cross your radar! I watch a lot of watch repair videos. I can't stand things around my wrist, never wear them but o boy, if I ever quit it with the surfboards, watch repairs might be something I'd look at perusing.
With the popularity of wave pools, you might find yourself closer to a wave than what you thought sometime in the future!
Those standing river wave boards are a different breed all together, the science and mechanics behind them have come a long way in a pretty short amount of time which is cool to see!

Very nice! Matching colors is an art form for sure! I like using an airbrush for small areas - so much control & only just enough paint to get the job done. Thanks for sharing your skills!

Loving your channel. Thank you for the great advice. Its always neat to see how people do the same things on the other side of the world. Great work man. From Ding Dang Ding repair in Cocoa Beach Florida. BTW. I am buying one of your Tshirts. ( I am local om more entitled to the waves than you ) I did this because I am ripping off your Idea and making some of my own. If you dont like it come over here and fight me. Lets see you try that upside down. Jk. Thanks man.

Hey Daniel, I'm going to try repairing my FCS plug that was ripped out based on what I have watched in your videos. Want me to send a video of it so you can pick apart everything I do wrong lol? It's a poly board and I'm going to try to replace the damaged foam with some EPS from a cooler or something since that is all I can get a hold of. Gonna try to glass it myself too.

Would there be any pros/cons to using a 4K clear? Thanks to your vids, I’ve just finished repairing and painting a 7’0 mid length and was wondering if a 4K would be better for the the final sand & polish? Cheers.😎

      2k? 4k sounds too much!
I do go into 2k benefits and flaws a bit in an old video where I review a repair that Rogue wave surfboard repairs did.
2k clears are really good product and having a hardner in them, they are exceptionally strong, durable and polish up beautifully. That said though, something like a car is sanded to 3000 - 4000 grit before polishing where as a surfboard generally is only going to be sanded up to 1200 - 1500 grit so 2k can be overkill as it's not generally being polished to its full potential.
Cons are it's price, it's hard to buy and mix small quantities (not really an issue for you if you're spraying a full board), you need good gear (compressors, guns) to use it and because of its hardner you need good cleaning equipment and thinners to make sure your guns don't get ruined. Over spray with guns is also an issue because of their high pressure so you need a good empty space to spray in.
You can buy 2k clears in cans but in my experience the caps/nozzles let the cans down and while the product from the can is good stuff, getting a nice even and flowing coat can be more difficult than a high end graffitti can like Molotow.
All that said though, as long as all those bases are covered, I'd never talk anyone out of 2k paints. If they are good enough for Ferraris and lambos they are EASILY good enough for surfboards!

@@smallkinedings 🤣🤣🤣 I think I’ve mixed up paints with TV’s. Thanks for the explanation, think I’ll stick to the acrylic clear for this project.💪

What was the advantage of the small airbrush vs using a rattle cam for at home DIY guys. Would the color and clear coat process be the same?

    • @smallkinedings
      @smallkinedings  Год назад +1

The airbrush definitely has some drawbacks. Cleaning is the biggest one after the initial price point. They ain't that cheap! Because the part are so small they are difficult to maintain and incredibly fragile. The smallest knick in the key components require replacements as every part is machined so precisely. If you're just at home doing diy projects, rattle cans all day! It is fun to have an airbrush though, even on wood and canvas you can get pretty artsy with things! Clear coat process remains the same though the airbrush paint is bot nearly as hearty as something like molotow paint so an extra coat or two of clear certainly wouldn't hurt!
