I feel like for most people who have been mac users anyway, upgrading from the machine their using is probably not worth it. If they were pro users they probably got a pro or max chip from previous gens and those still work amazingly well today. For productivity users who also do web browsing I don´t see how any of the base chips wouldn´t still be powerful enough. I have an M1 Ipad and I have yet to feel its performance limitations for my basic usage and light gaming. But I do think the latest M generations could get more windows users to switch. Especially since the base RAM upgrades, performance-wise the gap of 400-500 bucks between mac and windows pcs of equal power has pretty much disappeared, and apple has even been making a push toward gaming lately.
I also have an M1 Air and am thinking about upgrading. CPU-wise it's still fine. But the 8GB RAM became a bottleneck for me when editing a lot of photos. I'm still debating whether to buy an M3 Air with 16GB and save some money or get the M4 Air with 16GB and have the certainty of not needing an upgrade for almost a decade.
I don’t really use it, but I have a iMac from 2007 one of the first ones of the newer design. It still works perfectly. The OS is an ancient whopping two gigs of RAM.😂
I just got a 15 inch 16gb MBA on sale for $1099. Comes with 512gb ssd. I am able to easily run my entire business off of it and it’s amazing for media as well. I got the late 2024 version after they upped the M3 to 16gb. More than happy and will keep this thing for years. No need for me to get any more because at that point I would just be spec chasing.

Overall, as a person who’s generally preferred custom built PC’s, the current Mac lineup is arguably the strongest it’s ever been. The 600 dollar/700€ Mini M4 utterly humiliates basically every custom PC under a thousand.

@TechGameDev The M4 Max is great if you are the film crew of the next Avengers movie. Otherwise, overkill and overpriced. Machine Learning can be done with less expensive M4 Pro MBP or a Dell Precision workstation with the Nvidia RTX 4090.
Can I suggest that if you want to hit a niche audience as myself (software engineer). Maybe run some benchmarks that could show us performance differences of these Macs. - Compiling a project - Building a docker image - Running some SQL queries - etc...
I just bought the 15 inch MacBook Air and love it! I work from home in digital marketing and it does everything I need and more. Plus, I hated the M1 MacBook Air because of the screen. This one is so much better and I love the size! It reminds me of my old 2105 MacBook Pro more than any Air has before. I'm actually considering buying the 13 inch of this one too for a replacement for an old iPad since I no longer use it and don't really want another iPad. If you're not doing heavy gaming, programming, or videography, just get the Air. Forget waiting on the M4. There's always going to be a new machine coming out. The M3 air is a great buy! I had to wait a whole year and save up and don't regret it one bit!
My Macbook Air M1 16gb is still running really good for Logic Pro (my first use) !!! Stable and noiseless. I can watch Netflix and other things in my bed confortably ! I will wait for the M5 series before switching for shure !
I just got a new (sealed Refurb from Apple), 16" M2 Max, 38-core, 64GB RAM, 1TB, with Apple Care+ for nearly 3 years, and Final Cut and Logic licenses, for $2100 off eBay. I am so lucky (and happy)! Now I want Apple to update their Studio Display and XDR with tandem OLED, and pro motion. Happy Apple shopping guys!
I was waiting and supposed to get the MacBook Pro M4 14" with 24GB of RAM and 1TB SSD, however it took time for it to be available in my country. I went with the MacBook Air M3 15" with 24GB RAM and 512GB SSD with a discount last December and the 15" screen really works for me. the MacBook Pro has a great ProMotion display and speakers but the 14" is somehow small for my taste. I'm good with the M3 15" Air, it's lighter, thinner and great for portability. Also the price is lesser compared to the Pro that I'm supposed to get.
In my opinion there are 3 models to take into consideration: the MacBook Air M2 for those who want to save money, the future MacBook Air M4 for those who want maximum power and portability. Finally the Pro MacBook Pro or Max for professionals. The model that makes the least sense of all in my opinion is the basic MacBook Pro M4 because ultimately apart from the mini LED display and the SDXC slot it has nothing truly "Pro"
I think you should wait for the Macbook Air M4 to make this comparison for 2025. I still have my M1 Macbook Air for office work and is amazing. I think I wont NEED to upgrade for at least two more generations (M5 or M6) or at least until they put Face ID on Macbook Air

I am a business user and bought a M4 MacBook Pro 24 GB RAM with 1TB SSD. Because for me life of a laptop is very important. My previous laptop was Dell and I used it for more than 8 years. MacBook is the best as it is a much stable OS. No anti-virus needed. No subscription for 365, no malware removal tool, great battery life. ...etc.These are some of the things just not possible with any Windows laptop even if it is from MS. Apple is unbeatable as of now.
One configuration you didn't mention is the binned M4 Pro chip - 20k multi-core, 97k metal for the test results using the 12-core CPU/16-core GPU configuration
personally i have 14 inch base model M4 macbook pro, it is the best value in my opinion, the display and battery are killer as well as the ports and speakers as well as faster charging, i personally dont mind it being slightly less portable and the features of the base model M4 are much improved over the air, by the time u spec a 15 inch air to same specs as macbook pro base model m4 its only 100 dollars more expensive, if u want a macbook air m3, i would get it on sale for several hundred dollars off,
I just moved from a 14 M1 Max 32GB 1TB to a 16 M4 Pro 48GB 1TB with nano texture, I never needed the extra power of the Max chip and I valued 24 hour battery life (I know it’s lower with my workflow, around 10-12 hours) love nano texture (have it on my ASD) and love the extra screen real estate of the 16. For my workflow the M4 16 feels much snappier as I don’t get to take advantage of a Max chip.

I wonder choosing M4Max will help improve my work flow with no laggy. Im currently using M1 pro 16inch with 16GB RAM. It kinda struggle when i editing high megapixel photos such as R5 , after edit the first photos, it takes 5 to 10 seconds to preview the next images in Lightroom or Camera RAW.
The m1 MacBook air is just enough and is a great buy the m2 is amazing bc the m2 chip is still very powerful I have an m1 ipad air and it's so much more than enough for performance but the best Mac is probably the mac mini m4 incredible value
question about battery life, is there a setting where you specify if the macbook is optimised for battery life or performance? I understand you can max out performance on battery knowing it will last (say) three hours or whatever? Not sure if this oprion exist on Win laptops depending on the make. Ive got Mac mini M1 16gb, after a fresh install no app is even opened nothing is running and system activity shows me 10gb ram being used. How on earth they are still selling 8gb version? (running latest macos version)
RAM usage is misleading because modern macOS and other operating systems are designed to aggressively grab “free” RAM for caching purposes. As soon as an application needs that RAM it will be released. It is a point about the 8GB configs but not for this reason.
@@dominicjackson2498 Yea but on the other hand i can easily hit 2GB swap usage which shouldnt be the case if the ram is enough. With the current setup 24GB looks like a bare minimum but with only web browsing 16GB is ok.
@ Again it’s down to the design architecture of modern operating systems. Something like Windows 9x only uses the page file when it runs out of actual RAM. But NT-based systems use the page file/swap partition and the physical RAM as a common pool (and so does macOS 10). It’s why running Windows 9x or macOS 9 off an SD card is OK because it won’t write (disk swap) to the SD card unless it needs to. But running NT kernel Windows off an SD card will destroy the card much more quickly because the OS pages to the card not knowing it is a medium that can only support a limited number of write operations.

Just ordered my M4 Max with the unbinned chip and 64 gigs of ram. Agonized over the size, but finally decided on the 16 inch.

I got a M3 pro 16” 36gb ram 512gb open box MacBook pro and its been awesome for software development so far, coming from an intel MacBook.
My M1 Macbook Max is still plenty of power for video editing. I might buy the next upgrade if it comes with a OLED screen.

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, and it's still running great. It'll probably last you over 15 years bc Apple Silicon are better than Intel

The M3 MBA Geekbench Metal score is wrong for the 10 core version. It should be 47k which is a lot higher than the 40k for the 8 core M2 version

For example, I have a macbook air M2 512gb and I found a good deal on a Macbook pro M1 Max 32gb 1tb ssd, would it be a good option to think about that or would it be better to save a little more money and go for a Macbook pro m4 pro base model?
I wonder choosing M4Max will help improve my work flow with no laggy. Im currently using M1 pro 16inch with 16GB RAM. It kinda struggle when i editing high megapixel photos such as R5 , after edit the first photos, it takes 5 to 10 seconds to preview the next images in Lightroom or Camera RAW.
The m1 MacBook air is just enough and is a great buy the m2 is amazing bc the m2 chip is still very powerful I have an m1 ipad air and it's so much more than enough for performance but the best Mac is probably the mac mini m4 incredible value

question about battery life, is there a setting where you specify if the macbook is optimised for battery life or performance? I understand you can max out performance on battery knowing it will last (say) three hours or whatever?
Not sure if this oprion exist on Win laptops depending on the make. I think my laptop always throttles on battery. (I might be wrong).

Im saving up for the m5 lineup because it's rumoured to switch to an oled screen, moving to the m5 pro lineup should be an insane upgrade compared to my current laptop which has a 4050 and a ryzen 7 7735hs, it's a great laptop but no where close to the mac lineup so really looking forward to it

not necessarily. If you’re only doing office tasks or web based tasks the MBA is fine for that usecase

Ive got Mac mini M1 16gb, after a fresh install no app is even opened nothing is running and system activity shows me 10gb ram being used. How on earth they are still selling 8gb version? (running latest macos version)
RAM usage is misleading because modern macOS and other operating systems are designed to aggressively grab “free” RAM for caching purposes. As soon as an application needs that RAM it will be released. It is a point about the 8GB configs but not for this reason.
@@dominicjackson2498 Yea but on the other hand i can easily hit 2GB swap usage which shouldnt be the case if the ram is enough. With the current setup 24GB looks like a bare minimum but with only web browsing 16GB is ok.
@ Again it’s down to the design architecture of modern operating systems. Something like Windows 9x only uses the page file when it runs out of actual RAM. But NT-based systems use the page file/swap partition and the physical RAM as a common pool (and so does macOS 10). It’s why running Windows 9x or macOS 9 off an SD card is OK because it won’t write (disk swap) to the SD card unless it needs to. But running NT kernel Windows off an SD card will destroy the card much more quickly because the OS pages to the card not knowing it is a medium that can only support a limited number of write operations.
