I'm 46 and produce Drum and Bass music, and this is one of my favourite songs of all time. James Reyne is a masterful songwriter and has been a major influence on my own music. Both his solo music and Australian Crawl have some of the greatest hooks ever devised.
Great insight. I think a lot of people struggled to comprehend his diction but his lyrics really are poignant and capture the times perfectly. I love, love, love this song ❤
Australia has produced way more than its fair share of great world class bands & musicians - a good few of which are criminally underrated on a global scale.
I agree. I love the chorus part ''When the feelins gone and you can't go on slave'' I can do the vocal to that and get it to sound almost exactly how James Reyne would do it.
@@seanhandsaker913 Thank you. I think along with film, Australians also produce some of the best rock music I have ever heard. James with Australian Crawl, along with Hoodoo Gurus, Dragon, AC/DC and Midnight Oil are all very deft, clever musicians in the genre of rock and roll in it's purest sense.
Saw him a couple of nights ago supporting Sting on tour. James was as good as ever (that’s why I’m here on RUclips listening to his songs 😊)! Love, love, love this song ❤
Heard this on the radio one night way back. Was feeling down a bit. Song really picked me up. Stuck in my head ever since..just keep going. When the feeling's gone..just fly. Don't give up. Spread your wings x
This song makes me happy♥️Love this video🎹 Just put it on my lists....Greetings from Hungary🇭🇺Thanx ❗😀 ( Happy Franky Hungary KARAOKE 🎸RELAXATION with 5,000 cool songs 🔶️on 35 lists📒
In my opinion along with many others James Reyne is an Australian national treasure ~ sharing his excellence in music for many years, legend ? Yes absolutely.
3 reasons why it's real: 1. Sung by a real artist 2. Feels like life and evokes genuine emotion 3. Has more than five lyrics ...The kids will die from organic reality listening to this!!!
Australian legend. My 3.5yr old daughter listens to his music with me . She likes most of his songs . When we play random songs, she knows exactly which are james singing .
Picture yourself anywhere listening to this. I used to play this and Giant Step to the Eifel hills in Germany. I think they preferred it to the Schläger songs that were always being played. James Reyne and The Triffids etc, superb Aussie bands.
James is one of the most underrated musicians and songwriters Australia has ever known. I would've loved to hear a collaboration with James and Tina Arena, I believe that would've been something quite spectacular.
This is a great song. It has a timeless feel to it which James sure had a knack of doing with a lot of his tracks like Motors too fast as well. His taste in women is fine too, the girls used in all of his videos are just smoking hot!!
What is it about Australia producing some of the best musicians of all time? They truly don’t make them like they used to, play this song to the aspiring rocker who may otherwise never hear it! It’s an absolute belter.
I grew up working class, but have been educated and, I suppose, gone in a different direction to how I was raised, but I have always remained loyal to my roots. ...and there's just something about this song that reminds me of who I am and where I came from. ...this song reminds me of home.
One of my favourite solo songs from James. I've seen him in concert in Adelaide at the Grand Prix in '92. He was superb live. He has always been a great singer/songwriter and not bad on the eyes either. I grew up with Australian Crawl's music, top Aussie band and music that we don't hear anymore.
Very beautiful song ,after 8 year my sisters and I gathered to gether to celebrate our birthdays and in one of our road trip this song popped up,we danced with lots of fun and laughter ❤❤❤❤
It's always a little heartbreaking when you come across an old song/video and think the singer is a bit alright looking... then you realise you were like 4 when the video was made apparently lmao!!! :)
Remember this so so well I was a teen just got my L,s and was cruising along when this came on the radio in my mums old sigma but it was a marantz radio so it was good sound
Top tune!!! Heard it for the first time on Bob Harris in '92 and still sounds as fresh today!!! Timeless tune from Jim Vallance that just lasts forever.........wonderful!!!
I did some road work for you guys when Guy was alive, the Marconi club was hardly an exciting venue but I played some 12 bar stuff. Other roadies warned me off, and I never made it to the cardoma cafe. Your solo work is , and always be, top notch.
Thanks so much for the upload. You just don't hear James or Aussie Crawl on the radio except for the once in a blue moon Hucci Facucci Mama or Reckless ( excuse my spelling - no speaka Italia as Ted Bullpit would say..) James and Aussie Crawl are icons and legends of Australian music so it is shame. Perhaps they need a mini series like they did with Inxs to boost their popularity.. Personally, it wouldn't sit well with me as Inxs were all about the limelight whereas Aussie were no doubt trying to make a buck but they weren't so glam about it all. I am happy hearing them once in a blue moon and jumping on RUclips every now and then, It just makes me appreciate it how special they are. I wish I could locate my old James Reyne cassette tape... It is a bit selfish as in this scenario James and the boys get little royalties. I have heard that if restaurants or shopping centres play an artists song the artist gets a little compensation.
If you're in my car, you hear Aussie Crawl _all the time!_ I keep a good selection of my fave music and play them to death for a few days then change and play the next band to death too and keep them in rotation. I don't think my passengers like driving with me much as they don't get much choice. Too bad, it's drivers privilege!

You have excellent taste young man.
@@petalparker5 Thanks brother, keep rocking
I have seen James many times. He is a like a fine wine that gets better with age. Glad you found this guy and like his music.
Awesome to here brother. This was made 2 years after I was born and it is easily one of my favourite songs..Rocking from New Zealand 🤘
@@sanbornolsen I'm 26 too. Found out about this song in 2019 and love it! Quite a fan of 80s/90s music
Where did those 30 years go? James Reyne's best song.
Hammer Head is his best.
Down the toilet, for me.
Hearing now
They evaporated. Depressing.
Superb vocal, guitar and tune. One of the best Australian songs I have ever heard.
Yes! and was produced by the talented Australian Simon Hussey - he won Producer of the Year ARIA in 1992 with this song and a swag of others.
Absolutely 💯 agree

Yes, he's great live. Especially when he does "Reckless"- just him and his guitar.

Well said. Did the same to me beautiful song
Arguably the finest Aussie contemporary musician EVER! Our guy, James, rocks!!

Born in 1980...sound track to my high school years...
James Rayne first crush 🥰
To be honest....
I saw James play in Thirroul last month (Feb 2019) and he was amazing, sounds exactly the same as what he did in the 80’s and 90’s.

Just heard James open for Sting at Bowral on the weekend with this song. Just superb.

good one James, this is a piece of art, like a Brett Whiteley, timeless and worth millions
This music never grows old , this has so much depth and meaning
James co-wrote with Jim Vallance, who co-wrote many of Bryan Adams' songs.
Picture yourself driving across the outback during the summer with this song cranked up in your car
Picture yourself anywhere listening to this. I used to play this and Giant Step to the Eifel hills in Germany. I think they preferred it to the Schläger songs that were always being played.
James Reyne and The Triffids etc, superb Aussie bands.
Never done outback but I’ve done Bruce highway with James tunes cranking. We are the lucky country
James would have to be THE most underated songwrite/singer in Oz music history..some of his solo stuff is sublime as his Australian Crawl songs.
James is a fkn legend can not rate him enough, cantvwait to see him perform again
Excelent song of James reyne! 1991
Yes.
JAMES REYNE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Highly underated voice brilliant
5 yrs later after first post and still listerning to James/Aussi Crawl music.
I was 15 and loved this in '91.. Nothing has changed 😀
I was 11 when it was released and loved the sing immediately..and still do to this day 😍 James was my first big crush 😘
I was 17 and I never heard this song again till a few years ago.

Me too. ❤
I knew a gentleman who grew up poor as one of nine children. He's more or less a billionaire and generous to others, remembering where he started.
Definitely one of the best songs ever. Have seen James Reyne play many times on the Central Coast lately, and he still sounds just as good.
Played this now 20 times repeat .... great track...
Is it time for another 20?
great song from James Reyne one of the best things that ever came from Australia.

Truly love this song
James reyne you bloody legend
There's a light in the valley
There's a heart all alone
And the door is always open
Go away from your window
Pull the shades way down low
And in a whisper, words are spoken
Higher and higher
Taking you there
You've got to fly
You've got to care
When the feeling's gone
And you can't go on, slave
When things ain't right
You wanna stay all night, slave
Looking for someone
Who will always be strong
And who will not let you hide
You need your defender
For right or for wrong
You know the path is deep and wide
Higher and higher
Taking you there
You've got to fly
You've got to care
When the feeling's gone
And you can't go on, slave
When things ain't right
You wanna stay all night, slave
When the feelings gone
And you can't go on, slave
When things ain't right
Don't give up the fight, slave

My #1 James Reyne song. As a musician, it's one of those tracks I wish I'd written myself.
