You guys are mentioning non-canon characters that are not major. Goten is a major character. He is the son of Goku and yet has very little character development. That’s inexcusable. Dragon Ball Super was an opportunity to rectify this problem but no progress was made.
Super is gonna be around for a long time so he will have time to grow. Same thing for kid trunks Super is just the Dragon Ball Z story continued after the Buu saga so just give time some time it’s gonna be lit for Gohan,Trunks,Goten

Super takes place approximately four years after the battle with Ma-jin Buu, considering in Z Gohan and Videl were high school students and in Super they married and Gohan has a proper job. Goten was 7 during the Buu Saga, 7+4 = 11. Then one year goes by, since at the beginning of Super Videl is pregnant and then we see Pan as a toddler. 11 + 1 = 12. The Bulmba becomes pregnant and has her child. Let's say that takes another year. 12 + 1 = 13. Goten could be 12, but he could also be 14

In fact he continue being short until the 3rd tournament, when he was around 18. Before that when we last see him at 15 he doesn't look older than... let's say 8 years old. Gohan was different since he looked taller as a teen, but who knows what happened? Maybe Toriyama forgot their real ages.
Super ruined all of this, the focus was all about Goku and Vegeta who came to a level that no one can challenge them anymore from the other Z fighters and both Goten and Trunks.

Well, I think to turn Super Saiyan, it takes a mix of emotions where rage comes out on top. I think Goten was able to get to Super Saiyan faster than Gohan, Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks was because he was just a kid and didn't know how to balance and control his emotions. The others I listed were much older when they went Super Saiyan, so they knew how to control their emotions better than Goten, but that's just what I think. Also, Gohan took on the Great Saiyaman costume so he could fight crime without revealing who was under that costume.
