Like father like son, the son clan is a strong, tightly knit family. We’ve talked about the similarities the kids of Dragon Ball have to their parents in Dragon Ball Z and Super, but how about we look towards the son family with Goku, Gohan and Goten. Would anyone have guessed that Goku would father not one, but two sons? We mean, yeah, he’s a looker, but Goku isn’t really father material. Maybe this is why Piccolo looked after both of them more than he did.
Goku’s parenting withstanding, The Son kids are an interesting pair. They’ve led unique and amazing lives that far surpass what Goku went through as a kid. However, despite having adventures in two different sagas, Gohan and Goten share a lot with their father and a lot with each other. Aside from the obvious genetic similarities like hair and whatnot, they also inherited his signature ability, the Kamehameha, and have gone super saiyan and beyond in a shorter time frame than Goku. It’s safe to say that one day the kids will surpass the father one day. However, today, we’ll look at some of the strict and strange rules both Gohan and Goten had to follow as sons of Goku. What makes them similar, what makes them better than Goku? All of these subjects and more will be up for discussion. The "Son" surname comes to Goku's grandfather who saw him as a baby and adopted him. The grandfather's name is Son Gohan. So goku made his first son name Gohan to honor his grandpa( and the fact that Gohan was happy when Goku mentioning foods when they coming up on what will be Gohan's name will be)
Yeah that was a weird one, most people who have seen the show should know that he was named after his adoptive "grandfather" - He's not called Son Kakarot after all.

The Son in Gohan's name comes from Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong is written as 孙悟空 in Chinese and it's pronounced Son Goku in Japanese. Toriyama wanted to name the main character Son Goku so he ended up making Gohan's last name Son too.

Goku did teach his kids some values. Never give up, for example. The cell last fight with Gohan is a perfect example...yes, Goku did messed it all up with the senzu bean, but he was there for Gohan and when Gohan was giving up, it was Goku that spoke to him and said he was the stronger and he could do it.

goku's sons far surpassed him as children, but they'll never surpass him when they become adults. goten and gohan put nowhere near the amount of effort goku did in training to get stronger.

Same with Gohan though Gohan liked studying and thus didnt go out of his way to train unless he had a reason to.
@@ddeaths1965 I partially think it's genetics. Saiyans live to fight, while that's not the same of humans. As half-Saiyans, Gokan, Goten, and Trunks have the strength, not not necessarily the drive.

@@abswithadot Yeah, damn it. Toriyama completely rekt Gohan's character. He made him overpowered from child and than he became an adult and than came Super. He was still pretty close to Goku in terms of power during Majin buu and kid buu saga, now even with all that shitty training with piccolo and fight with Goku, he pretty much was just a mob in universe saving arc and seemed to be even more weaker than he was in dragon ball z. Even Freiza and 17 were treated better.

In terms of Gohan, Goten & Trunks being able to go Super Saiyan at very early ages, it’s been confirmed that the kinder a Saiyan is, the more S-cells they have which makes it easier for them to go Super and since they’re all half human... there ya go

Son Goku's name was given to him by the human that adopted him, Gohan. Bardock is Goku's actual father and his Saiyan name is Kakarot.

I went looking to find this comment. Also Cell, for obvious reasons and Buu possibly as he did the hand motions.
I stated this under another video, but Kakarot makes it a point to address the tail issue, in which Gohan asks Vegeta why his tail hasn't grown back, Vegeta informs him that once a Saiyan becomes stronger than a Great Ape, they no longer grow back their tail as it isn't needed. I think Super also reinforces this idea as Pan learns to fly at a very young age.
I'd like to add, that by the end of the cell Saga, I recall reading that the intent was to pass the torch to Gohan, but the response was so awful, they decided to bring back Goku. I honestly feel like having Gohan as the main focus (although he kind of is in the Majin Buu arc later on) would have been intresting.
This ends up coming up later in Super, when Gohan basically gives up trying to follow in his Father's footsteps and foregoes the whole concept of Super Saiyan entirely. Goku even makes a commet later actually stating that while it surprises him, he's glad Gohan has found his own way.

Goku has trained with his children. He gave them all the Kamehameha wave, so I think that counts enough. Vegeta was there but seriously not there. Remember in the Majin Buu Saga he admitted to not hugging Trunks even once. I personally think that’s worse. Lol! At least Goku has someone he can count on to train his children when he can’t.

#2: Get weaker as time goes by so that Goku gets all the spotlight
#3: Stay in school and waste their power
#4: Do everything off screen
#5: Only Take care of a few minions and leave or get beaten by main bad guy

Fun fact: Chi chi actually use to train Goten and help him achieve Super Saiyan .
It's actually funny how Goku's kids were stronger than him when he was their age, but as they get older they become the exact opposite of what Goku been when he was growing up, and become weaker.
