Why I'm Not on Clozapine

  • Clozapine (also known as Clozaril) is an atypical antipsychotic medication that is used to treat schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. As someone with schizoaffective disorder, I have received many comments suggesting I go on clozapine whenever I mention that I still hallucinate and have psychotic symptoms, even though I take medications that treat it.
While the people who have suggested clozapine to me mean well, I think it’s important to just get all the information out there for everyone. This video is in no way a vehement response to those people, rather it’s a video where I present evidence to back up the fact that clozapine is not a medication I should be on, nor want to be on.
So here are my three main reasons of why I’m not on clozapine. Psychiatric medications work differently for everyone, and don’t take this as an anti-clozapine video. I’m actually quite a fan of it and what it does for the people that take it. It’s amazing.
    It’s just, not for me.

I think I have a unique experience here. I was on clozapine for about 24 years and it absolutely saved my life. I was really bad off. Then about 3 years ago I got blood clots in my legs. My doctor then put me on xyprexa. I've been doing good on this medicine too. But definitely when your doctor says you don't need it that should be the end of the story!

I'm scitzoaffective and on Clozapine. I was resistant to everything else and off the planet. So glad it helps. Sure I occasionally experience voices. But I've learnt to cope. No ,meds seem to stop all voices.

Thank you for that explanation about Clozapine. I definitely think that going with your doctor says is good. My husband does this with his diabetes. People always ask him why he's not on insulin and he says the doctor says he doesn't need it. He can control it with other meds. Sounds like you are in the same boat. 😊❤️🙏

Good for you, i used to run a mental health care home for youths, and the stories my clients told me were heart breaking, out of the list of mental health issues bi polar, ocd, aspbergers, schizophrenia was the most challenging.

A close family member has been on seroquel for 2 months, improvement has been noticed in her mood, just she is still dealing with thought broadcasting which distresses her & disturbs her daily routine.I hope she gets better and same for you all, stay strong & take it day by day 💪

This was a great explanation of why you're not on Clozapine. I really appreciated how you gave us that deeper reasoning into why it isn't a good fit for you, even though "my doctor doesn't recommend it" is reason enough like you said. Your additional reasons (plus the fun facts at the end) helped me learn some cool stuff about Clozapine, which I was completely unfamiliar with before watching this video. It's awesome that Zyprexa works so well at both reducing your psychotic symptoms and preventing mania, and I hope it continues to work well for you!

Yup, clozapine is for those who are not responding well or at all to other antipsychotics. Some disorders are chronic, but we learn how to eventually manage the residual symptoms. Olanzapine is pretty strong and effective in its own right as well. If we can manage to complete and participate in our activities of daily living, that is often enough for a lot of people!

@@JeffreyWilliams-dr7qe Just as I have heard success stories, there are also horror stories as well that need to be brought to light with antipsychotics. They should be monitored more closely and more stringent medical decision making should be made before prescribing them. There are too many cases where someone with regular depression or anxiety just automatically gets prescribed one of these which is not appropriate whatsoever if there are no psychotic features or extremely severe life-threatening symptoms. With Clozpine, at least blood work is regularly monitored. Some others such as Zyprexa, Risperidone, and Quetiapine should be closely monitored with blood work as well.

Nice video Kit :) I must say I agree with you and your choice, it's just that a while ago I got the impression that you might be slightly treatment "resist...ish" and that clozapine might work better for you than zyprexa but taking everything into account in all honesty I'd say you're doing really well. It's just that I'm on 7,5 mg of zyprexa and 200 mg of lamictal, and you're also on zyprexa and lamictal, with similar dosage I presume, and I have such an insane weight gain and hypersomnia and drowsiness most of the time, but with pretty much negligible mood fluctuations and no psychosis, delusions or hallucinations, so I just thought about what my psychiatrist said was an old psychiatric "doctrine", and that's if the meds don't have side-effects, they aren't working.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I once thought clozapine is right for you, but lately I realized it would probably be an "overkill", and you're actually not just surviving, but also very much thriving on zyprexa, and I'm really glad for you :). Best regards Kit :)

Can you make a video about what caused all of your mental illnesses or point to one that’s already in existence. For me schizophrenia was probably triggered by doing lsd once in my life. The only drug I ever took.

I think you should be on lybalvi because it doesn't cause weight gain as much as plain zyprexa. But then you are skinny. I always wondered how you avoided the hunger zyprexa causes everyone else? And another thing is clozapine won't pull everyone out of psychosis, of course.
