I'm 53 and I only discovered Petula Clark yesterday! No joke. I don't think I grew up on this earth planet!!! I knew "Downtown" because it stuck out to me when I heard it on the tv show "Lost". Yesterday, I was in a bad mood and remembered that song for some reason, I looked it up on Amazon music and I find this "Greatest Hits" album. I'm like, "Who is this person, and how does she have a greatest hits collection when I've never heard of her (I'm usually well versed in music)?" Out of curiosity I listened to it. OMG! Not usually a fan of 60's music, I still fell in love. The music transformed my mood with its upbeat, fun, optimistic lyrics. By day's end, I listened to the album on repeat so many time and I knew I had to learn more. To my surprise, I discover the now 90-year-old is a living legend the world over still performing. I've been scouring the internet and watching RUclips videos such as this to learn more. What a life! A true lady in all regards. I'm quite smitten and definitely a new fan!!!
I read with interest your post. I am 77 years old so a real sixties girl!! Having been married for 56 years 3 children and 7 grandchildren I am still a huge fan and have seen her many times on stage. Glad you are finding out about this legend!!
I remember when I was young, my soon to be uncle from Italy who barely knew the English language since he just came to America, well, he would sing the song Downtown. He only knew the word Downtown. Yes, Petula Clark has been a legend in mucis the world over with her popular style of songs. Yet since you're new to the 60's style of songs, try listening to Matt Monro. He too was from across the pond, and his voice and style of music is something that I am just beginning to recognize, and I like you lived in that era, but his music went right over my head. I guess I was more attached to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, etc., etc. But find some of Matt Monro's music and understand the strength of his voice.he was talented. Some of his songs..."I will wait for you", "Softly, as I leave you", "Walk away", "If I never sing another song", "Portrait of my love", "Born Free", ""All of a sudden", "My way".
Saw her last night tin Greensburg, PA. She sang for 90 minutes without taking a break, without sitting down, without taking a drink. And her voice was phenomenal.
I saw Petula in New York this past December. She was so much better than I expected. Great show and terrific audience...many well deserved standing ovations.
I'm glad to see she's still performing. I saw her in the 1980s when she appeared in a free summer concert a Brooklyn park when was appearing in the musical ,BLOOD BROTHERS on Broadway. When she started to sing her hits, the audience sang with her and it was a special moment. She's a great performer and can still sing very well in her 80s.I hope she can keep at it for years to come.
Tears to everybody's eyes when we hears these songs today. I still remember her music during High School & after that. Good times, they still stay with me. Cheers !
Petula’s singing voice WAS the ‘60s to me during my childhood. Her songs made me realize there was a big and exciting world out there and that I needed to find it.
Oh my goodness my very favorite singer of all time, listening to WLS AM Chicago on my transistor radio in the late 1960's at night under my pillow so my parents wouldn't hear, praying a Petula Clark song would come on ♥️ I just love her so kind so much class and humble about her spectacular career .
It is literally amazing that she has been in the business 80 years. Who can forget that string of 60s hits? Great, timeless songs performed flawlessly and she can still belt them out.
@@user-ky6vw5up9m The R&R Hall Of Fame is for anybody who as had a big influence on the music industry and I know that Petula covers that a great deal more than some.
Downtown has been one of my favorites since I was 7 so long ago ... Saw Petula in Blood Bros on Broadway and was awestruck all over again .. a very lovely lady who even carried her own Sharpie for fans autograph requests ... So sweet and so kind
"Downtown" was my first favorite pop song (when I was 7) and remember the first time I heard it on the radio as I sat in the back seat of my parents' car. It remains my second favorite pop song of all time. Petula Clark is and always will be a world treasure.
Betty T I also saw her in concert (in Florida) last year. She really shouldn't be out giving concerts any more. Her lifelong fans (of which I'm one) will just be saddened by her performance. Her concerts are no more than a rocky trip down memory lane. Sad but true.
This song makes me cry every time. Driving home from seeing my sister that we had been adopted by different family memories. This song came on in between Goodwater, AL & Sylacauga on old 280. My parents were so happy to have a child at last & let me choose the radio. I adore Petula Clark & the effusive memory from that trip home. I wish I had a way to let her know how much "Downtown" strikes hard in my heart & soul. What a great swingin 60's icon. (thrown around now like anything with a song on the radio) Thank you for the greatness, Ms. Clark.
That was fascinating, a lot of things I didn't know. I always thought (still do) that Petula had (has) a certain elegance. Despite her great success, she is very down to earth and quite amusing sometimes. We love you Pet.
Thank You! That was WONDERFUL! I'm glad Pet is still out there performing and being happy! GOD BLESS YOU AND THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the great music!
When "Downtown" hit the U.S. charts I remember my father saying that he had seen or heard her in England during World War II. Great to see a great lady's story and see the actual newsreel clips of her singing as a child sensation.
Thank you so much Jane P. & CBS producers for doing this piece! I love stories about women I admired as a kid. And, I LOVE that she is not "retired," and going strong and working and living an active life! Cannot wait to I get to see her live, now that I know she is still performing. I cut my hair in the 5th grade because I wanted to look like Petula Clark!~
Omg 85 years old and not a bloody wrinkle on her she looks absolutely amazing, she has just celebrated her 87th birthday. Wow what a lady just beautiful
I missed this broadcast. I never missed Petula Clark on the radio when I was a little girl. I am almost 40 now. I grew up in a different kinda place. A poor, but more innocent kinda time. We always cherished this woman's songs. I sang along every single time I heard her. She is the very first woman to pull me into singing. We played and sang, as my Grandfather did. And his family. But this was something else! ♥ Petula, Janis, Dusty, Gladys, Exene, .... etc..... Petula was my very, first, personal lady of song. And I have carried on ever since. Petula is another world. I adore her. I still sing along! ♥♥♥
Her voice is deeper. But she is a role model for longevity in an industry known for the opposite. Hope to go and see her in concert before I die-I’m 54.....
God bless you, my fellow Scorpio! All these years later, and she still has that voice. My Lord, this was the song that helped get me out of a mental funk after 9/11. Those lyrics to DOWNTOWN were very poignant after the Twin Towers were destroyed. To know that she kept spirits strong during the Blitzkrieg with just her voice? To help liven folks with her music for over 4 generations. Thank you, madam...😍🇵🇷🇺🇸🗽🦂😎
I had the honor of seeing Petula on the road in "Blood Brothers" back in the early 90s. She was a great singer and actress with the drama and hit the comic timing perfectly. Loved her! :)
Wow! I had no idea that Petula live so many lives, so to speak. All I remembered is "Downtown" and a few other songs that she performed. I didn't know she accomplished all she did starting at such an early age and made such an impact on the world. I'm so amazed. I'm also amazed that she looks good at her age and still belts out the tunes and she's as sharp as a tack. We should all be so fortunate. A life worth living. And, as of my viewing of this video, 5 years later than when it was posted, she's 91 years old now!

It is literally amazing that she has been in the business 80 years. Who can forget that string of 60s hits? Great, timeless songs performed flawlessly and she can still belt them out.
PETULA, a super loving lady. The DIVA of the 1960s, Please give her DAMEHOOD.
Great great my favorite
What? What? What? She's not a Dame? She's a Dame in every other queen's eyes.
She is a Dame .....
A great dame, indeed!
Downtown and Kiss me goodbye were Red Hot popular songs in the international pop charts especially in South East Asia, Hong Kong, Malaysia.....
Petula sings so beautifully in French. She is a joy and I for one would love to meet her.
Same here Charles.
Wow, 85 years old and still kicking out the JAMS...Happy for ya, Petula.😁😎
Loved the interview with Petula Clark, and have always enjoyed her music. Amazing at 85!
So good to know that Petula is still on the road. Rock on, sister.... Why hasn't our Pet been Damed????
Better yet why hasn't she been inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame!
It is not for everyone

85? I can't think of anything verbally abusive to say about this woman. She looks great for 85 and her voice is still pretty strong.
Just as an item of curious nature...how is it possible to be 'verbally abusive'on a written format?
GN, "Stickler Syndrome", much?
I saw her when she was a youthful 78.
Saw her last year..... loved her in her day but she doesn't sing good anymore.. ..85 enjoy your life now, give it a rest, know when to leave.....
Betty T I also saw her in concert (in Florida) last year. She really shouldn't be out giving concerts any more. Her lifelong fans (of which I'm one) will just be saddened by her performance. Her concerts are no more than a rocky trip down memory lane. Sad but true.
Priceless interview. Amazing. Been a fan since I was 6 in 1965 when I heard downtown. ....
Been dancing to Petula since the early 1970s..as a five year old kid! STILL a fan!!
I saw Petula in Austin, Texas about three years ago. I loved it! Petula is still great!
Loved her music when I was in grade school. And still love it now
Fantastic woman. This is how each of us would like to age. Respect. Trinidad & Tobago.
Petula is an amazing person. At the age of 85 she still sings and looks good, let's hope that there are a few more years in her yet.
And a much deserved DAMEHOOD to go along with her very much deserved CBE.
@@darrenplumpton9737 Here here! Why hadn’t she got one?
So good to see someone remembered from my youth, still out there, singing away & looking good!

glad to see her vigor
She still great and beautiful, time was good with her.
The 1st outfit they show her in was the outfit I first saw her in. It was on the Dean Martin Show, boy was she having fun doing a Melody with him.
