And you can tell Petula felt the deeply sad irony in those words as she sang them. And that "goodnight Karen" was utterly devastating!!

We in the audience sometimes think great music stars are always there competing with each other to win greater fame, trophy awards, fans and wealth. But now we know that music superstars form great bonds of love and friendships too like ordinary human beings.
My friend who was from Downey, his parents went to Karens funeral in Downey because it was open to the public and he sent me a copy of the rembrance his parents received at the church on Downey Avenue that day! All these many years ago........I just received it last year 2020 because Chris was getting ready to sell his parents home and he ran across it while cleaning out his parents home in Downey! I'm Lucky to have it! Karen and I met one time at our dentist office on Paramount Blvd and we talked for a little while! She looked gorgeous and was so nice to this 24 year old fan who had been to 3 concerts of theirs over the years!!! She meant a lot to so many people and as the gentleman responsible for giving the Carpenters close to you said one day on CBS Sunday Morning, she didn't realize how many people loved her! After he said this he lowered his head and did not speak for several seconds clearly still moved and affected by her passing some 30 plus years later! It brought tears to my eyes while watching his interview on the! He was the head of A and M records and played w the Tijuana Brass! His name escapes me and I apologize for not remembering his name! Some people remember what they were doing the day Elvis died. I remember the day in February 1983, when a local radio station was continuously playing Karen Carpenter songs. Then the news...that Karen Carpenter had died. Tears streamed down my face. I'll never forget that.

I must admit I didn't expect this to be as powerful and jaw dropping as what it was. I was a bit hesitant because sometimes cover versions of songs like this are, at worst, not very good. This was stunning. You could have heard a pin drop and that deserved a standing ovation.
How anyone can keep a dry eye watching and listening to this -- most of all, how Petula got through it to the end -- I don't know! Such a moving, beautiful, heartfelt performance from a wonderful singer to a fellow superstar. Brava!!

I’m a 75 year old guy, and I cry every time I watch Petula pay tribute to one of the most incredible voices of the past century.
She sang it pretty as Karen asked her to do. Very touching.
