Not taking away from Karen and her angelic voice but my favourite rendition of this song is by Rita Coolidge the Delta Lady. Either way it is the genius of Leon Russell on show.
An interviewer once asked legendary songwriter Leon Russell which of his many versions of “Superstar” was his favorite. Without offending the other artists who have covered his song, he simply told the interviewer “I have always been a huge fan of Karen Carpenter.”
That was my dream, as a 6-year old in 2001, to have her velvety singing voice, though Richard’s was airy, played piano at 12, rest in heavenly peace Karen

Oh my. My favorite Carpenters song, with Karen at her peak, vocally. This remix with orchestra brought tears to my eyes. The song is moving enough, but to see an orchestra actually play and to hear a few extra instrumental additions in the second verse just takes this song to a completely different level. Rest in peace, Karen. Your voice will live forever in the music you and Richard recorded.

In 1973 a girlfriend insisted that I go with her to a Carpenters’ concert. I knew Karen was sensational as a singer, but I didn’t really care for their music at the time. Well the only thing that I have personally ever witnessed, that would meet the definition of sublime, was Karen Carpenter that night.
In 1974 my parents took the family to a dinner show at Lake Tahoe. I was 13 and was blown away seeing her playing the drums. We were amazingly close. It tough not to shed a tear when I watch these videos.
This album is an absolute masterpiece. Richard Carpenter's lush orchestration really adds a magical touch to what was already a great collection of songs.
The most fantastic female voice that i have ever heard. So pure. No one has ever come close to her voice. I was devestated when she passed away. Her singing will live on forever.
@@hakonfinsland6866 Thanks for the 'tip' on Lucy Thomas - and her sister Martha - absolutely beautiful. Karen Carpenter is still my #1, and likely always will be, but Lucy has a brilliant future.
And the worst part of it is that she basically,at a physcological level killed herself because she didn't think she was good enough when she was actually far too good for this world
The best......when music was really music. My 27 year old niece died a year ago......of the same thing.....had a pace maker since she was 5. She received the first coved shot....2 days later.....she died
Yes it was angelic. Karen was one of those rare people that came along and received a blessing from God. In her case it was her talent, and what a talent it was. I am thankful we lived in a time where through the wonders of the recording arts, her voice is immortalized. Oh, your not the only rocker who is a fan of the Carpenters. I knew many rockers who appreciated not only her vocal talents but her drum playing abilities as well. She could have held her own on a drum kit against the great ones. She simply had talent. Her brother's musical arranging skills are not to be dismissed either. It was his musical arrangements that gave rise to their unique sound.
Oh man can i relate to that ! .. 1973 , England , huge Led Zep and Pink Floyd fan but secretly had the Carpenters Greatest Hits album and knew EVERY nuanced word to every song !

That says a lot about their parents. They didn’t raise them listening to exquisite music. I grew up listening to Maria Callas, Marlene Dietrich, The Beatles, Bee Gees, Barbra Streisand, The Carpenters and the list goes on. In my school people were teased when didn’t know about talented musicians.
It's a shame that I appreciate their music more now than when I was a teenager. I was into rock and roll and their music just wasn't up my alley. Karen was a magnificent singer though...one of the best of all time. I guess I started to appreciate their music when I was into my 30's and I'm now 65. Boy!!! did I ever miss the boat on some fine music.
She represents to a me what pure femininity singing sounds. Perfect attention every time i hear her voice. I am very grateful Richard Carpenter has the passion to add her voice with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. I heard Rainy days and Mondays (RPO) on satellite radio and heard the orchestra in the background and had to be sure what i was hearing. WOW!

What is also obscene is the fact that her brother Richard never botheted to organize an INTERVENTION to save her life. I guess he was to high on drugs. And what about the rest of her family? Is not complacency a form of culpability?
I agree with the other people who said: No one else could ever touch the voice of Karen Carpenter. To this day, her voice just floors me and just moves me so deeply, The Once is a Lifetime voice could only be Karen Carpenter. Deeply Loved and Missed Forever!!
I’m a 23 year old girl so I guess it’s a fair assumption that I love Lady Gaga or Katy Perry or her like. When I was growing up my father adored Karen. He said her voice was rich, like honey or chocolate. He gave me his Carpenters vinyl records which I couldn’t play then bought a vinyl record player off Ebay. Sadly my father passed a year ago but part of his enduring legacy is the love he inspired in his children, not only me but my brother, of the finest vocalist of modern times. She did sound like honey and chocolate and I adore her as much as my Dad did.
keep loving your father and help your generation introducing the Carpenters music . Karen's voice really sounds like honey and chocolate but from heaven's :) i love Carpenters too. Karen is my favorite singer ever and forever.
Turlough Girl I am a 65 year old guy and to me she had a voice like an angel please enjoy your fathers love of her music and the memories of your father
Turlough Girl I happened to be 23 the year Karen died. I don't think I would describe her voice like your dad did, but he certainly wasn't saying anything bad about it, and that's because there was NOTHING about her voice to say anything bad about. My favorite word that describes Karen's voice is velvet. Soft and rich like your dad said.
Turlough Girl I know where you are coming from. My mom was a domestic violence victim in 1977 when I was 7 years old. She died at 29. But to this day I still love groups/singers such as Neil Diamond, The Carpenters, Sonny and Cher because they remind me so much of her. They were among her very favorites. Sorry you lost your dad. Let his memory live on through you. I know from experience, my friend. God bless you always. And Jesus loves you.
Kudos to the Royal Philharmonic and Karen's singular vocals . Both are equally spectacular and complement each other in their respective mastery!!! Needless to say, there will always be only one Karen!!!
I'm still hurt at losing Karen Carpenter. That voice won my teenage heart all those years ago. Seeing her on video reminds me of just how beautiful she really was. Miss her terrible for ever.
For years I was mad at her for leaving us , especially when the Christmas songs began each season. Eventually my anger has been replaced with a sort of melecoly of hearing her and knowing she is no longer with us….
The Carpenters brought calm to a very turbulent time in our country. I for one, am VERY grateful for the very positive effect that their wonderfully powerful influence had on our country and my life. THANK YOU, Richard and Karen!!!
Her performance - every breath - is so perfectly controlled. The desperate search for control in other aspects of her life is what killed her, but as a performer she owned every moment.
I grew up with Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the 1980's , but I remember as a kid hearing the Carpenters on the radio and I was just amazed by the voice I was hearing. It was just so pure and inviting that I wanted to hear more when the song ended. Thank God for RUclips I can hear more , and more and more.
Your story is the same as mine... but that proves that no matter what music we're into, when we hear Karen, we recognize greatness and true talent...in this case... the voice of an angel coming directly from heaven itself...

This is a haunting melody . It still resonates with me years and years later . It’s a song that I have to just stop and listen to once in a while. Such a tragedy to lose her so early in her life . Thank you Karen and Richard .

This song and this version , with the famous London Philharmonic Orchestra , is one of the BEST of the Carpenters library. I love this song and it continues to move me everytime , as if it were the first time I heard it ! Karen's tone and range were unbelievable! I've never heard anyone else express themselves with such emotion , as she did . I feel it within myself . Thank you Richard for this wonderful arrangement! Thank you Karen for gifting us with your beautiful personality and voice !
I’ve been so blessed to have grown up listening to the Carpenters, what a great library of music they’ve blessed the world with and 1971’s Superstar was a song that really showcased Karen Carpenters range of emotion in her singing, I would have to say Superstar is my all time favorite Carpenters song. Karen Carpenter you are forever missed!!
EVERY instrument and its expert handler in this production makes for an orchestral MASTERPIECE. The luscious, longing, seductive tone of the clarinet and the somber french horns (and other wind instruments) introduce, complement, and reinforce the entire mood; the rest of the equally brilliant musicians coalesce in creating a captivating, soaring, symphonic companion to Karen's pitch-perfect musical story-telling. An absolute FEAST for the ears and the SOUL.
I've said before and I'll keep on saying, she has the voice of an Angel. This is the best rendition of this song I've ever heard, no one does it better. I don't think Richard has gotten the praise for how great of a musician/composer he is. I tear up each time I listen to this song, such a beautiful song. Thank you Richard and Karen for such a great piece. R.I.P. Karen, your voice will live on forever. :) 💋❤️🌹
I think Richard was great, but let's keep the record straight this was was co-written by the immortal Leon Russell and Delaney Bramlett [Not Bonnie, Bonnie was locked out of the room when the two men wrote the song over a long afternoon]. The idea for a song about a Groupie chick was pitched by Bonnie Bramlett after getting the idea from Rita Coolidge, Leon's Girlfriend at the time. The Carpenters bought the song from Leon you might say and Bonnie did her own recording [watch it, it's sucked IMHO] spreading the rumor that she wrote it. BS. She never wrote a song in her entire career. Leon was a master of space and time, a journeyman, a maestro.
God, this remaster/remix is amazing. It's still hard to believe that the vocal on this record is the first-take "guide vocal" Karen laid down for the rest of the orchestra to play along with while recording the other parts. What a talent. So sad that she left us so young.
Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Karen passing away. She really had the voice of an angel. One day when my time on the earth is up and I go to heaven I won't be surprised if the angels sound just like her.
Even the young people in the 70s who thought the Carpenters were too " square" ,today acknowledge how talented Karen was and see their music in a different light
I grew up in the 70’s and loved Karen. I listened to her over and over and would I try my best to to imitate her sound when I sang...her vocal range was amazing and it was effortless.
With the sick crap that was going on in that era, square is pretty good Praise. Karen was pure class and talent. So sad she was taken from us. The B.S. that women had to put up with about bodies and looks.
@@timothyjensen179 True, Blaine drummed on most of the early hit recordings. But Karen was drummer on all of the songs on the mega-hit "Now and Then" album, and on the Carpenters' two largest-selling world-wide hits, "Yesterday Once More" and "Please Mr Postman." Hal was the best but Karen was surely one of the greatest female drummers, and the pioneer for them.
John Lennon once crossed paths with Karen Carpenter and reportedly said; “I want to tell you love, I think you’ve got a fabulous voice." That was an assessment many of us can agree with, and the fact that she and her brother covered "Help" and "Ticket to Ride" (both of which were primarily written by Lennon) may have also left him with a good impression.
@@MichaelGunner123 What do you mean what do I mean? The Carpenters covered two Beatles song which were (by and large) penned by John Lennon himself. I'm sure Lennon found that complimentary, so he in turn complimented Karen Carpenter once the opportunity presented itself to do so.
@@MichaelGunner123 I think ..967 probably didn't realize you really didn't know the meaning of the term "covered," since it's so universally used in music. It is usually used when an artist performs a song that another artist is previously known for. It isn't as much used if an artist records something simply *written* by somebody else, but usually if someone repeats something that is kinda already known and associated with some other artist having recorded it. It is used as a verb: "The Carpenters covered 'Ticket to Ride'", as a noun: "I like the Carpenters' cover of The Beatles 'Help'", and as an adjective: "We're going to watch a Carpenters cover band tonight, but I can't imagine anybody coming close to Karen Carpenter's voice!"
Her voice is amazing. She sung with so much passion in her voice. This video was almost to the end before I realized that the conductor is Richard Carpenter. Any else missed this?
On July 31st, 1976, I drove from DeKalb, IL to downtown Chicago to see the Carpenters at the Arie Crown theater at McCormick Place. I picked up a dozen red roses before leaving DeKalb (at "Glidden Campus Florist") and made the 70+ mile trip arriving in time to see their opening act walk on stage (George Goebel... he was funny, but I thought, "This is kind of a weird pairing!") The Carpenters were fantastic. Funny, personable, engaging. Richard was in top form. Of course, Karen's voice was magical. At the end of the show I walked as close to the stage as I could get to see if I could deliver the roses to her personally and security told me I couldn't. But, they did take the roses from me and assured me they would make certain she received them. I don't know if she did receive them (I like to think she did...) She was the best and her voice can still bring me to tears. (BTW, I took tons of pictures that night and still have the slides not more than 10 feet away from me 40+ years later.)
Duane, THANK YOU for sharing this wonderful memory! I never got to see the Carpenters live, though I have corresponded with Richard a couple of times since. Your thoughtfulness in taking those roses to Karen touches my heart tonight, and I think it's SO VERY IMPORTANT that Americans honor our musical artists whose creativity, talent, and hard work has bettered our lives, and that we do so while they are alive and here to receive our appreciation and to hear us say how much they mean to us. My own guess is that Karen indeed received the roses as you were told she would and, if you included a card as well, that she read it too. All the best-Don in Indiana
YOU ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE SEEN THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCE. I MOVED TO THE U.S. IN 1983 AND I WAS LATE ALREADY. SHE WAS NOT ONLY "BIG" IN HER OWN COUNTRY...BUT WORLD WIDE! THIS GUATEMALAN LOVES HER AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS WORLDWIDE. SHE IS TIMELESS AND WITHOUT BOUNDARIES OF LANGUAGE OR PLACE. I SURE ALWAYS REMEMBER HER AND ALWAYS MISS HER...WITH ALL MY RESPECT!
I sang it to my new dashie puppy and Guinea pig, named Ginny and Anthonie! Oh I loved them and Karen and Richard: at 62 years I still have the same breeds, and music! And have added Jiles, with no intention of letting his teachings slip away from me! So grateful. And you clear away debris that has left me wondering for decades! Viva!
No one has ever sang like Karen and her genius brother Richard must have been proud of working with her, thank you i cried when Karen past away, beautiful singer.
I was 8 years old when my parents took me to see them at the Greek Theater. I’m 61 now and I still remember her beautiful voice that night, her beautiful white dress and her drumming on her white drum set❤
Wow what an incredible challenge by Richard to take his already magnificent arrangements to another level. When I bought the CD I was so worried that Richard may have overwhelmed the purity of Karen's voice with depth and power of the Royal Philharmonic, but I should not have feared his brilliance as an arranger has not diminished. This is a masterpiece that has brought a new dimension and richness to the Carpenters music. Thank you again Richard for your brilliance, I am sure Karen is in heaven enjoying it too.

My God, what you just said brought a tear to my eye.
This album is an absolute masterpiece. Richard Carpenter's lush orchestration really adds a magical touch to what was already a great collection of songs.
I wish she had realized how perfectly wonderful she was. Pure perfection.
Cecilia Kirk oh my gosh! That is exactly why she left us so soon! She didn’t realize that truth!
Her witch of a mother did her wrong in so, so many ways.
Cecilia Kirk I wish she loved herself as much as everyone else did
She should have been saved by so many that failed her and us.
She poured her heart and soul into her music. The best always leave us way too early.
I'm 73 and have never heard such purity ,a once in a lifetime voice,What a loss.
This song brings me back to the 70s when I was just a young boy.
The most fantastic female voice that i have ever heard. So pure. No one has ever come close to her voice. I was devestated when she passed away. Her singing will live on forever.
Karen was good, very good indeed but Lucy Thomas at age 15.....Listen to Starlight, Suddenly and somewhere...Lucy is my nr. 1
Pls don't forget Barbara Streisand or Whitney Houston or Ella Fitzgerald.
Many rockers (like myself) are closet Karen Carpenter fans. You can’t be human, not to be moved by this angelic voice from Downey, Ca.
Irony is that for Downey, they were latecomer beatnik jazz musicians.
I love them. So musically misunderstood and vastly underrated talent.
Oh man can i relate to that ! .. 1973 , England , huge Led Zep and Pink Floyd fan but secretly had the Carpenters
Greatest Hits album and knew EVERY nuanced word to every song !
I've heard another Rocker share the same sentiment.
I worked as On Staff Studio Recording Eng. & Stage (EVERGREEN) with Frank Sinatra & Bob Hope & Burt Bacharach & many other Mega Stars & Mega Film Scores in L.A. > WISH I had worked with the CARPENTERS! Karen melts your Heart!
Mesmerizing. She made men AND women fall in love with her equally, which continues to this day. PERFECTION.
I was laughed by my English friends when I expressed that I adore Carpenters. Maybe they think it is old, but I knew it is timeless.
J S. Sorry, we have those people too. But be assured that there are plenty of us here. Cheers mate. 🇬🇧
Fans of the Carpenters, & Karen especially. 🎤💔
You're RIGHT - they're WRONG !!
Yep, I get laughed at as well. I don't give a damn...best female singer EVER.
The only song that always makes me shed tears. She had the most beautiful voice ever.
This is the only carpenters song that doesn't make me cry. Just love the power and feeling in her voice.x
WOW!
With Karen singing, we can feel each word.
@@GiGiLuvsKatz Everything comes straight from her heart, NO DETOURS.
Lo mismo me sucede, me hace llorar porque me recuerda mucho a mi fallecida esposa.
Her voice was that of an Angel! She graced us with her gift. Never forgotten.
The fact that she only got 32 years on Earth seems an obscenity. That magnificent voice will never be matched, no one else will even come close.
God must have realized something was missing in his choir...only explanation i can come up with.
I feel comforted by thinking about her like Mozart...both had a short time on Earth, but left a large and rich legacy of beautiful music behind.
Ever!
Amen! @Richard White
Richard White Karen’s voice was a genuine gift from the heavens. The only other 2 that come close...at the top of their game, Streisand & Celine.
Everyone who thinks Whitney Houston had the best voice ever, have never heard Karen Carpenter.
Stephen Davanis Streisand and Celine can’t approach Karen.
@@markhall7646 ikr those voices just grate on my ears. Harsh.
Oh to hear that voice again. What a pure, beautiful talent. Nice that her brother put this together with the orchestra. The whole thing is lovely.
HEAVENLY AND PEACEFUL.
That Orchestra, along with her voice is nothing but sheer superbness

I am already 75 years old and every time I listen to Karen Carpents voice I think where has all the beautiful music that used to be gone?
I agree , great music by classy people. 75 is the new 60 my friend, I see people in their 80s working out at my gym. Gods speed
I must agree....it's abysmal!
Kudos to the Royal Philharmonic and Karen's singular vocals . Both are equally spectacular and complement each other in their respective mastery!!! Needless to say, there will always be only one Karen!!!
Gorgeous!!! A tribute to Karen and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Many many thanks
That voice to this day, 55 years later still sends me 'over the moon'. I heard her in high school and was a voice that connected all of us.
Me too. With tears
55 years later?
The Carpenters brought calm to a very turbulent time in our country.
I for one, am VERY grateful for the very positive effect that their wonderfully powerful influence had on our country and my life.
THANK YOU, Richard and Karen!!!
This song always brings me back to my youth, full of passion and love of life and adventure. RIP Karen Carpenter.
Frank Sinatra (The Voice) said the ONLY singer he would ever pay to listen to was Karen Carpenter. Pretty High Praise!
Mark W I have never heard that one. I love it
Thanks for sharing. The Voice should know.
Mr. Sinatra had good taste.
even john lennon and sir paul mcartney praises karens voice.
Randy Sanchez who wouldn’t? She seemed so humble about it too. Very charming. Katen and Richard both.
Her performance - every breath - is so perfectly controlled. The desperate search for control in other aspects of her life is what killed her, but as a performer she owned every moment.
YES, Because Karen was a perfectionist !!
I grew up with Carpenter songs. Karen´s velvety voice was also to remain the most magical voice on the planet.
Karen had that Once in a Lifetime voice... so rare... so Incredibly Special! 💖 One word... SUPERSTAR!
Purest voice I ever heard.
That 70's Girl she had the voice of an angel

That 70s girl, you've described Karen's voice so very appropriately.

Or a God gift to us .
What a great music and collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Love this. Karen Carpenter's voice still the most admirable for me.
One of the best and most memorable songs of the 70’s in my humble opinion! 👍
Yes! Exactly beautifully said! One of a kind! I cry also every time I hear Superstar! 2/4/22 ♥️
Agree.
I completely agree with your commentary.
Yes, absolutely!*!! ❤️
Perfection!*!! 🎼🎶🎤🎹🎸🥁🎻🥰❤️💞💖💖💕
Her breath control is so amazing. Those long notes have no brakes. How she did it, only God knows.
I can't listen to the Carpenters without having a box of tissues close by... Karen Carpenter's voice always makes me cry, even in public.
Wow, are you an Emo?
@@CB-xr1eg no. I am an emu. Fought in the great Emu war, which we won.
You are so right Nirmal.
God, this remaster/remix is amazing. It's still hard to believe that the vocal on this record is the first-take "guide vocal" Karen laid down for the rest of the orchestra to play along with while recording the other parts. What a talent. So sad that she left us so young.
I know nothing about the technicalities about music. Nothing. I'm just someone listening touched by the emotion. God bless musicians.
The voice of an angel gone too soon
I say this exact saying anytime a song of theirs comes on the radio!
?
Well Said, Angelic Voice...
Extraordinary Karen and great orchestral arrangement by Richard !!
True
I grew up in the 70’s and loved Karen. I listened to her over and over and would I try my best to
to imitate her sound when I sang...her vocal range was amazing and it was effortless.
With the sick crap that was going on in that era, square is pretty good
Praise. Karen was pure class and talent. So sad she was taken from us. The B.S. that women had to put up with about bodies and looks.
You have to have a pretty cold heart to not feel the heartache she conveys in this (Leon Russell) song.
They got older. Lol
That drummer sure could sing...
Wasn't she a brilliant drummer didn't miss a trick. Just amazing.
mikebtko yes she could
Best comment!!! Karen would love it!!!
timothy jensen Hal Blaine, the “Johnny” of pop music drummers. The best there’s ever been.
"LONELINESS IS SUCH A SAD AFFAIR" TRUE WORDS....TAKEN TO HEART !!!!!
What do you mean by 'covered'?
@@MichaelGunner123 What do you mean what do I mean? The Carpenters covered two Beatles song which were (by and large) penned by John Lennon himself. I'm sure Lennon found that complimentary, so he in turn complimented Karen Carpenter once the opportunity presented itself to do so.
@@541967 Was just a question. Didn't know what 'covered' meant I that use.
Oh, HELL no!
Karen and her songs remain within my heart
Duane Siebert Beautiful ❤️❤️
It would be wonderful to see a montage of your slides from that show with their music accompanying it! And I bet she loved the roses!
Get your slides transfered to digital media & post them.....please!
She died 36 years ago today. Her voice still cannot be matched by the best of today's singers.
Yah got that backwards. None of 2day's singers can match Karen Carpenter, even at their BEST!😌

Yes dear you're absolutely right
No one has ever sang like Karen and her genius brother Richard must have been proud of working with her, thank you i cried when Karen past away, beautiful singer.
No words can justifiably describe her voice, she is one of a kind to never be replicated. Loved their music in 70s, so very pure and genuine.
Beautiful arrangement by Richard Carpenter
No one could have sung this like Karen-so missed
Let’s not forget the brilliant orchestra..... True talent as well.. best of the best
