A big part of Karen's appeal which is sometimes overlooked is that the words to her music are tearjerkers too. Always meaningful and uplifting, or if singing about something sad, straight-on real and true.
That's true, there's only a handful of singers throughout all of pop music history that this can be said about, that there is no sound alike for. She is one of them, and undoubtedly the best. Rare air indeed.
I was a freshman in college, when I first heard Karen Carpenter sing “Close To You” over an FM station on the radio. I thought, what a beautiful voice this young woman has. Who is she? If Ms. Carpenter were still here today, I believe she would have already been a recipient of both the Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to American music and culture.. And, as great as Ms. Carpenter’s extensive musical talents were, she was also a very warm and wonderful person, who left this world much too soon.
I don't think the day will ever come that her voice doesn't bring a tear to my eye. I sure it never does. 50 some years, and I'm still in love with her and her lovely voice.

Charlotte Dickson yeah. Some douche said that to her. She hated this outfit here as well. But like Richard even said, she was always "aware," of her weight, but when that douche told her she was heavy, she went downhill.
@@rocknroller77 Your right I read that long ago. She liked being on the drums better than up front. They pushed her to just sing not play. She was a good drummer too. Such a sad story. I like many never heard of nervosa before. Her heart gave out.

She had one of the most beautiful voices that ever was. So soothing to the ears… When I see her on videos, I’m sure I’m in the majority here, where I still feel a sadness and wish she were still with us. And still the Carpenters and her voice makes me smile. So sweet that at times, (knowing she’s been gone now 40 years) that her voice is so beautiful it’s almost too painful to listen to. Anyone else have that feeling?
How one could sing so effortlessly yet so beautifully as Karen Carpenter? She’s got the most soothing voice to me, unexplainably touches me in a way no other female vocalist does.
Much easier to produce a show without mucking around with all of the audio trying to make it sound like the studio recording. They did a good job of syncing up. I didn't see one mis-cue in the whole performance.
In the BBC documentary Only Yesterday: The Carpenters Story, her friend Nicky Chinn said that John Lennon walked up to her at a Los Angeles restaurant and told her "I want to tell you, love, that you've got a fabulous voice."
tony keisling it’s quite ironic that you say that. The day Karen died was an anniversary for the “The Day Music Died” (the crash with Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Hopper). Such a shame that we lost her.
You are so right. It’s almost as if she just decided to end the Carpenters the day she passed, because without her there was no Carpenters. I wonder if things might have been different if Richard and A&M had let her release her solo album? She was defeated after her album, which she loved, was shelved.
Her fullness of expressive notes, particularly the lows. Her smoothness and adorable enunciated words/notes. My favorite singer and stage personna of all time. Impeccable timing and her joy sinks my heart like a ship. I love the singing performing angel. Forever!

Same here
A lot of talented voices will impress you but very very few can touch your soul like Karen could.
I go to tears every time I listen to her music. Never get tired of it. To say she had a beautiful talented voice is such an understatement!!!!
Oh my gosh, yes, yes and yes.
A big part of Karen's appeal which is sometimes overlooked is that the words to her music are tearjerkers too. Always meaningful and uplifting, or if singing about something sad, straight-on real and true.
Me too🥲
Sinatra had an iconic voice but people can do it or sound similar. Karen Carpenter's voice can't be duplicated. It is so distinct.
That's true, there's only a handful of singers throughout all of pop music history that this can be said about, that there is no sound alike for. She is one of them, and undoubtedly the best. Rare air indeed.
Sorry-- only one Sinatra; one Elvis... & one Karen Carpenter... What a century of great talents!
@@AndrewVOdom And ONE Michael Jackson.
And only 1 Brian Douglas Wilson
Keiko Toge can imitate Karen Carpenter's voice. Here she is imitating her voice for Richard Carpenter: ruclips.net/video/bQEGnqcdbeI/видео.html
I will hang it out there and say, Karen Carpenter has the best female voice of our time. So, smooth, clear, effortless, and beautiful. Just wow.
Karen Carpenter & Minnie riperton
Karen Carpenter and Whitney Houston. Both left us way too soon.
Hearing her beautiful voice sing "We've Only Just Begun" after so many years, transports me back almost 50 years ago to time when I had hope.
Dude! We all had Hope back then! RIP, Bob 🤭
loser
Sucks getting old. Seems like only yesterday we were in high school. And it's 50 years later.
I don't think the day will ever come that her voice doesn't bring a tear to my eye. I sure it never does. 50 some years, and I'm still in love with her and her lovely voice.
Her voice that makes me smile ❤
I largely gravitate to heavy metal and hard rock but her voice was legendary and there hasn't been one that has come close even to this day. Just an unmistakable depth of pure beauty
Lifetime hardrock/metal fan here as well. Absolutely love Karen's voice - angelic.
As Spock might say, "Fascinating!" that such a voice would appeal to fans of such disparate musical genres as heavy metal and treacly pop.
I heard them live in the spring of 74. They were incredible live.
:). I would give a limb to have seen them then.
She really looked great then! Her weight looks fine and she looks healthy. I dont know what changed all that, but we lost one of the most beautiful voices ever. Would love to have seen what else she would have done.
Apparently one of the producers told her she was chubby.
Charlotte Dickson yeah. Some douche said that to her. She hated this outfit here as well. But like Richard even said, she was always "aware," of her weight, but when that douche told her she was heavy, she went downhill.
@@rocknroller77 it's so sad Hollywood and the music industry wants women to look like little boys.
@@rocknroller77 Your right I read that long ago. She liked being on the drums better than up front. They pushed her to just sing not play. She was a good drummer too. Such a sad story. I like many never heard of nervosa before. Her heart gave out.
Charlotte Dickson I heard the same thing and that this was the start of her fixation on her weight... so wrong
She had one of the must beautiful and refined voices I've ever heard in my life, and on top of that she was a sensational singer. So sad and such a tragedy that she died so young.
There will NEVER EVER be another Karen Carpenter!!!
One-of-a-kind voice that can have NO EQUAL!!!
And an AMAZING DRUMMER!!!
Gone WAY TOO SOON...😢
My favourite female voice.
mine too, my favorite voice male or female.. while i love so many singers male and female and so many groups and so many styles of music and so many eras, she is and always will be the "one" for me...
Lets not forget ann wilson also
@@loredomattoni1496, Ann is my favorite rock female vocalist. Her voice is getting a little rough, but she can still wail!
I still miss her
I still find it tough to watch her without having to blink to hide my sadness . I m still left in awe each time I hear her voice. Ever since I saw her on Johnny Carsons Tonite Show , I’ve noticed a smile on my face , and a lighter heart , when listening to that one of a kind voice....You are missed , Karen 😢
HER VOICE WAS LIKE PURE SILK. SHE WAS UNDERESTIMATED.
👍🏻
Yes❤
It's people like you who help keep Karen Carpenter alive in our hearts
IT WAS PAST MY BEDTIME IN 1973 BUT NOW I CAN WATCH ON RUclips ANYTIME.
🤣, same here! 6 yrs old=8:00 bedtime...
Me too Stephen, in 73 I was 9.
My parents let me watch some of the specials
I was 10 lol but I would love to go back to the 70s and visit
I remember those specials, I loved to watch. I was only 12. I remember this song, and it was my very favorite then. Those were the good ole' days!
If anyone ever deserved a long happy healthy life it was Karen Carpenter!
I agree
How one could sing so effortlessly yet so beautifully as Karen Carpenter? She’s got the most soothing voice to me, unexplainably touches me in a way no other female vocalist does.
The wireless technology they had in 1973 on the Bob Hope show was amazing. No Mics, no messy cables, and they sound just like the record. Incredible!
Much easier to produce a show without mucking around with all of the audio trying to make it sound like the studio recording. They did a good job of syncing up. I didn't see one mis-cue in the whole performance.
You cracked me just up Ha Ha that whole crap was phony Karen was so pure but Bob was so insecure!
LOL this was all lip-synched. I hope you are joking.
@@jimburesh6694 I think he was joking.
I see what you’re doing 😂😏
Being a keyboardist myself Richard is astronominical
Richard is a great arranger, unfortunately he is overlooked.
she is one of the most unique artists to ever live
Karen was such a beautiful woman and she had the most beautiful voice, I miss the carpenters.
Her voice and presence really was enchanting. I just wish her self-confidence would have noticed this. May she rest in peace.
In the BBC documentary Only Yesterday: The Carpenters Story, her friend Nicky Chinn said that John Lennon walked up to her at a Los Angeles restaurant and told her "I want to tell you, love, that you've got a fabulous voice."
The most stunning woman in every way..totally extraordinary..
So tragic that when she finally did find true love, it turned out to be the biggest jerk of all time, and ended quickly and terribly.
She felt she was never good enough.….for her Mom.
She looked so pretty and healthy here. Karen was magical!!
Hi,how are you doing?
Ironically she hated this outfit. It was alleged. Hindsight s 2020, she ckd ve worn dark, black palazzo pant instead.
Her voice was perfect it always made me feel good she was an angel in every way.
I recall this wonder. Nowadays, computers attempt to remodel voices to sound like this, but they can't.
Pure crystal clear voice of perfect tone and timbre.
The sound of the Carpenters always reminds me of my happy childhood full of dreams and hopes.
Karen was Everything a woman should be . My heart still melts at seeing hey and at every syllable she uttered
Me too Gerald, I was 18 when she passed, the day the music really died.
What a beautiful voice she had.
It makes me sad that I was born after she left this earth. Seeing her perform live must have been sublime.
The low notes in her voice are remarkable rare to hear this clarity on this range ✨️
They ought to name a bird after Karen Carpenter because that's what she sings like. Nobody sang better than she did. Rest in peace

Roger Jackson but never forgotten!
Yes
The white dove.
Heavens ANGEL.
💕💕💕💕😇
I sing like a bird too. A duck! 🦆😏
there is just something so magical about her voice. and the way she drops her pitch is amazing
The Quintessential Contralto.
Glen Larson thank you. One of the famous Contraltos. But none really compare to Karen. She was top notch
I miss the Carpenters! I was quite young when they were at the top of the charts! But I loved Karen and how she could reach my heart!
Tremendous voice. So beautiful. After all these years is still the best.🎉🎉🎉
She never had to do any vocal gymnastics. Her voice just naturally flowed.
She looked amazing
Karen's voice screams the 70's and childhood and young adulthood memories, she was a great singer. 🎼
when KAREN passed away, the music really did die. how much music did we all lose that day.
tony keisling it’s quite ironic that you say that.
@@artistbrindle great point. The album failure was probably what put her over the top
Incredible - and so dearly missed!
Such a beautiful and timeless song, she was amazing.
Crisp and clear, I love you Karen Carpenter!!
She still gets right through my shields and defenses after all these years.
Me too, Trekker
Man that gives me chills! What a perfect voice.
How does Karen so fully arrest your heart as she sings? I will love her forever 🎉❤
Her fullness of expressive notes, particularly the lows. Her smoothness and adorable enunciated words/notes. My favorite singer and stage personna of all time. Impeccable timing and her joy sinks my heart like a ship. I love the singing performing angel. Forever!
I am 78 now. Whenever I want to relive and remember some of the best days of my youth I make a point of playing some of Karens’ beautiful and soulful music. What a loss for us all that this talented beautiful lady left us so soon in her life.
Dione Warwick said Karen was her ,,,,best friend,, and an angelic voice
