- All of the covers that I am currently playing "live" have some sort of "special" place for me. Having really impacted me in some way over my life... I am a huge fan of words and I love good lyrics so most of the songs that I sing today have very meaningful lyrics to me. I also believe that there is spiritual healing or "soothing" that happens when a person sings positive words or lyrics. So the message of the songs that I sing has become important to me at this time in my journey.
"Be yourself" is a song that spoke very loudly to me at a time in my life when I really needed to hear what legendary lyricist/vocalist Chris Cornell was saying. Because of this, when I heard of his passing by apparent suicide, it was particularly difficult for me. Not only because he had become one of my favorite singers, but the words in this song had such an impact on me over time and had helped me, like millions of other music lovers get through some of their darkest times. Now he was gone, and apparently by his own hand. Once again reminding us that you never really know what someone else is dealing with... so you should always be nice. Mental illness effects all of our lives.
Because I have a long history of struggling with mental health issues myself, I will continue to sing this song for those who also struggle, just incase someone really needs to hear the message. As well as in tribute to Chris Cornell one of the greatest of all time who gave us this great song in the first place.
I can never sing like Chris Cornell... but I can sing his words. His words in many songs and in many interviews are completely inspiring. Thank you Chris Cornell R.I.P.
If you are feeling Suicidal please remember " To be yourself is all that you can do" is really the the bottom line. Reach out to someone or call a hotline if you need to.... or crank up this song and sing it in celebration of surviving everything that you have been through this far. ( I mean holy cow what a messed up world we live in... right?)
