Awesome day fishing Captain Zac, enjoyed the trip, can't believe the size of that King Crab, we don't have them in our waters in Down Under. Thanks for the trip, tight lines and greetings to all,, Tony.
Hi Tony many thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king crab footage! I appreciate the kind words. Even though we couldn't keep this crab it was still pretty cool to see. All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi hammertimeBC thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king crab footage! After three full seasons, I love these Hondas (225 main and a 9.9 kicker) - they run smooth and are gas efficient. Congrats on the 9.9 kicker - that'll be a great tool for salmon trolling and halibut backtrolling! Calm seas and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi PNW Sportsman thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this king crab footage! Thanks for the kind words about my videos - I bet you are counting down the days until your new boat arrives! Just in time for the season! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Instant replay shows the sculpin was drunk on octopus! Man what a big king crab, when is the season open up there? Tight lines my friend! The Piscatorian
Hi Piscatorian thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this footage! Haha yes indeed that sculpin had a mouthful of octopus (which unfortunately was deposited all over my boat!) haha. The non-commercial seasons in Southeast Alaska are tightly regulated - they have a few "openers" each summer which last for as short as a weekend. I'm hoping to drop a king crab pot this year during those times so stay tuned for footage of that! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Back in 1990, when I was a diver on a sea cucumber boat, on two different occasions one of the other divers and I encountered king crabs in Sitka sound. We brought them aboard, but of course, it was only to show them to the rest of the crew before returning them safely to the water. In that remote area, with no one else around for miles, we would never have even considered cooking up those delicious but out-of-season crabs and eating them with hot butter and cold beer before returning to port.
Hi David thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut and king crab footage! Wow - sounds like quite an adventure back in 1990! I can't even imagine how cool that must have been to see the crab on the bottom - I've heard they travel together by locking into a large ball and rolling along with the current. Haha - "delicious but out-of-season crabs" with a hot butter and cold beer ... it is a shame the open season for king crab isn't longer! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Scoopeddad Drone thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this king crab footage! It is always a cool trip from Juneau to Petersburg via boat - you never know what you'll encounter! All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Great vid Capn Zac - as usual! Just wondering how much fuel do you burn on that 130 mi run? I'll go back and re-watch your original video when you showed all the boat details, to see how big your fuel tank is. I've got the same motor on my boat a fewer miles south (Ketchikan) and still need to learn the range I can go. Do you carry spare jerry cans? -Thanks for doing what you do, and sharing the details with us looky loo-ers.
Hi there @fitzfamily2513 many thanks for watching and I'm glad you are enjoying these videos, including the long runs down to Petersburg! I just looked back at a quick cell phone video I took while underway last season - at 4600 rpm (my preferred cruising speed which yield roughly 30mph), I was getting around 3 to 3.15 mpg (call it 3). Thus, in those conditions I could have traveled 130 miles using only 44 gallons. However, on a longer run I almost always get worse gas mileage than this because: 1) conditions may not be optimal - heavy seas or opposing tide can crush gas efficiency 2) on a longer trip you can unknowingly add extra miles by taking a slightly less efficient path of travel 3) on a longer run you often pass other great fishing spots that you'd like to try - I always zig and zag my way down to Petersburg and drop a few jigs along the way ... plus I may burn a small amount of fuel on the kicker if I'm back trolling during these quick fishing sessions 4) wildlife such as humpacks breaching or orcas will almost always cause "side trips" 5) you might have glass flat seas and decide to step it up and cover the ground faster, burning more fuel.... Long story short - when I make long runs such as down to PSG or overnight at farther spots, I always bring jerry jugs just in case. For the PSG run, I typically arrive at the fuel dock with fuel to spare. I have a 90 gal tank which starts full in Juneau and I'll typically have between 10 and 30 gallons left depending on the nature of the adventure during the travels. Even though having the jugs in the boat can create a bit of an obstacle, it is DEFINITELY worth it for peace of mind that you won't be running on fumes to get where you are going. Alaska is so unpredictable - taking safety precautions like this can make all the difference! Thanks again for stopping by and tight lines to you and your family down in Ketchikan in 2024! Captain Zac
@@CaptainZac Thanks for the reply, and all the details too! All of your points are valid, and things I need to consider, especially trying any longer runs. I'm seeing similar numbers to you: @4500 rpm 30mph and 3.1 mpg but only have a 60 gallon tank (big bummer!) so will be quite a bit more limited than you. Thanks for all the great videos, please keep up the good work. Tight lines!
Hey Zac, thanks for the closeup of that beautiful big King Crab. It must have been interesting getting the hook off that big claw without getting hurt. Looks like the 3 of you had a good time even though you didn't catch a good sized Halibut.
Hi Ben thanks for tuning in and I'm glad you enjoyed this king crab footage! Yes indeed - this outing was still a blast even though we only ended up catching chickens.
