Awesome ! You two are great and funny fishing couple. Mary seems like she doesn't care who catches the fish so long as they get in the cooler and her laughter is great.
Hey Mark thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the positive comment! I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! You are right Mary doesn't mind who catches the fish because it is usually HER doing the catching!!! haha Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
Wow, what a big lour and how quick they bait on it Captain Zac, great fishing trip team and nice day to be on the water and enjoy the day, and the last couple of fish were very nice. Thanks, thumbs up and greeting to you,, Tony.
Hi Tony thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Yes indeed - halibut love these big jigs! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hey PeelingLine thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this footage! Awesome to hear that you are seeing a lot of whales in your area. The humpbacks are showing up in numbers now because the herring have moved in. Tight lines! Captain Zac
@@CaptainZac We had a humpback surface right in our path as we were heading back on our last trip. It was cool but we had to go slow to pass it. Orcas have been all over too.
Captain Zac and Mary Perfect day on the water.. Look out when Mary gets a bite she swings for the fence… Most of the time it’s a home run.. Excellent video.. Tight Lines…Be Safe! E
Hey Don thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the positive comment! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and I'm lucky to have a great first mate! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Mark thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! I appreciate the positive comment and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Another great video showing Capt Zac and Mary teaming up for lotsa fun on the water. I’ve been blessed to having shared time with them both in AK waters. Mary’s laugh is legit! And man can that lady catch some fish! I personally saw her catch a 195 lb halibut near Petersburg a few years back. We were in fairly shallow water and she was fishing the starboard stern with a 7 oz Capt Zac jig (as was I but closer to the cabin). At least I can say that I’ve had my line in the water within 5 ft of a monster hali! :) Seeya later this summer Capt!
Hey there Geoff many thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the positive comment! Yes indeed that big halibut near Petersburg was an adventure I'll never forget! Crazy that such a big fish was in such shallow water. I recall I also caught a halibut sight fishing that day - a chicken hali rose to the top and I tossed a 1oz jig at it and connected! Looking forward to more halibut adventures later this season! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
What a beautiful day with a lot of action but I am surprised Mary did not have you arrested for stealing the best fish of the day. Keep up the good work Captain!
Hi Wayne haha yes indeed halibut theft is taken quite seriously around here - luckily she didn't press charges! haha Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Haha yes halibut theft is a serious crime up here in Alaska! haha Yes indeed the cod were certainly cooperating! Thanks for stopping by Bill and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Haha hey Scott well said! I need all the help I can get - she'll be slinging 80-pounders over the rail at some point this season so it was nice of her to let me have this one! I rig this trailer hook a little differently than most - I form a loop to connect it to the jig hook shank and take it off each time I re-bait the jig (thus this trailer hook sits in front of any bait I have on the main hook - helping keep the bait on the hook). Does this make sense? In fact, I ordered some of these for my store and expect to have them within a week or so. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
Hey @actualcentar7950 thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you are enjoying my videos! I don't have a hard and fast rule - if I'm near a tide turn I'll often make sure that I fish through the tide (an hour before and an hour after for example). If I'm back trolling I tend to hop around from spot to spot and if I'm anchored up I'll tend to fish for longer at a spot. Sometimes you have to wait through some slow times and then BANG - a big hali will show up all of the sudden! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Yeah yeah yeah. She popped you cause you were snagging fish, can't fool an old married fool, thats what my wife does! That'll teach her to assault the Capt! Nice Whale footage! Mary's little giggle is priceless in the back ground! Congrats on another Great Trip, Thanks for taking is along!
Haha hey @NRALifer1 thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! She's usually the one catching all the fish so this was a rare exception to that standard! Tight lines! Captain Zac
Hey Patrick thanks for stopping by! My spinning setup is a Penn Slammer IV 8500 w/ 80lb PowerPro on a Penn Carnage III jigging spinning rod. Tight lines! Captain Zac
Hi @jaychoi12345 I'm glad to hear they arrived - thanks again for your business! I use a Penn Slammer IV 8500 with 80lb PowerPro braid. Good luck with the jigs and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
@CaptainZac yes thank you. I will try out new jig and see , how it performs in WA. I have no doubt about it. I love how much it glow. More order will be coming from me in future.
Hi Jonathan thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! I really enjoy eating both halibut and cod. While I do prefer halibut (if I had to choose), I definitely enjoy pacific cod and know many anglers who actually prefer to eat cod over halibut. Cod is a super mild, sweet, flaky white fish - really tasty! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Phil thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this trip! Yes the pacific cod are great to eat - very sweet, mild and flaky white fish! Great for fish and chips! Thanks and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Tony thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! I do keep some pelagic rockfish such as dusky rockfish but I tend to throw most others back. Non-pelagic rockfish are heavily regulated or closed all together (such as yelloweye). Given all of the other fish available in Alaska, sculpin are often an undesirable bycatch when targeting halibut or salmon. Here are the more detailed rockfish regs: www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/regulations/fishregulations/PDFs/southeast/2024se_sfregs_general_freshwater_saltwater.pdf Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
Hi Thomas thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! Yes indeed pacific cod is very tasty - mild, sweet and flaky! Sorry to hear they aren't available in the Puget Sound anymore. Sounds like an excuse to book a trip to Alaska! haha Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
It is a Seaborg 500mj - I chose that because it is small enough to be fished "in hand" while jigging for halibut (whereas many other models are much larger and meant to be fished out of a rod holder). Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
Makes sense - I'm still getting dialed in on this setup but thus far I've found it very enjoyable to fish "in hand" while deep-dropping jigs. I also like that you can set the hook just like a traditional setup and then engage the electric once the fish is hooked (vs. sitting it in a holder with a circle hook and waiting for the fish to hopefully hook itself).
Well said David! Haha yes indeed it is always better to give it a rip whenever something feels a little off - there just may be a lunker on the other end! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hey @CoastalGoon thanks stopping by and I appreciate your support! While I do have my USCG Captain's License, I'm not currently guiding as I'm navigating a day job alongside Alaskan adventure. Should this change in the future, I'll let you know! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

why don't you guys keep rockfish or sculpins? are they not legal to kepp?
Hi Tony thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this early season action! I do keep some pelagic rockfish such as dusky rockfish but I tend to throw most others back. Hi Tom thanks for stopping by! 80lb braid on the spinning reels and 50lb braid on the electric reel. Tight lines! Captain Zac
Cod. Yum.
I'm jealous.
Puget's Sound doesn't hold them, anymore and we aren't allowed to keep 'em.
Captain Zac
What size Seaborg reel is that?
It is a Seaborg 500mj - I chose that because it is small enough to be fished "in hand" while jigging for halibut (whereas many other models are much larger and meant to be fished out of a rod holder). Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac
That is why I asked. I have seven or eight electric reels but they are all huge and make it a pain to hold the rod while fishing.
