we wuz there several yrs ago....it was a kick....you think going to Alaska you would get widl rivers and quiet, but here, its shoulder to shoulder fishing and you had about 6 ft to cast and catch...but it works...families come out all day.....
I am proud to call myself a hippy because I stand for protecting the wilderness. Without what the wilderness has given us, America would literally be nothing. We need to preserve and respect our natural resources so that America can remain a strong, beautiful and wild nation. Additionally, while I agree that feeding yourself and survival skills are important, preserving a food source is equally important.
Get at it! Wish my nephew could see a big on like that. He just got about ten trout out of the fishing derby pool our town brings to picnics. They even let us grab 'em with our hands as they drain the pool and give the rest away. That king looked huge! Congrats to whoever caught it!
Yeah, all these people are locals fishing purely to feed their families. I'll believe that as its written on the internet and therefore must be true - thanks for your sage council.
Wow...this is really combat fishing. I suspect that it is mostly locals and everyone knows every. Likely some bragging rights and competition but also some serious meat gathering for the year. Nice vid IWantToFish
i have tropical fish and when the convicts would mate they would get super aggresive and territorial, and the other species used to swim near them, but after a few weeks of getting little mini bites they stayed away, now they stay clear when theyre mating and dont even go near their side of the tank, so i think your wrong about them not feeling pain, they must do :P
Pondguru, your sadly wrong. “Those people” are my eskimo family members. They have always fished and hunted for sustaining their own traditions and livelihood. I remember my aunt using an ulu knife to cut a moose. She packaged the meet and froze it. Because of the way they have lived, it has allowed my aunt to stay home all through her three kid’s life. They all are adults and continue to live the same life.
"Survivor" you don't know the lifecycle of a Salmon. Plus that was a Native Alaskan Fisherman, I hope he is able to line 10 more up right along side that one...
Nice fish but not really as "huge" as I expected. I've gill netted in Old Crow Yukon with my Uncle Shawn a couple of times and some of those kings needed two of us to carry them up to the house.
Yes...these people who 'star' in this clip are Eskimo. They are not part of a clan or band. They are considered Alaskan Natives. In Alaska, on any form asking about your ethnic background, it asks if your Alaskan Native because this could mean you are Eskimo or Indian. From this eskimo typing, I can tell you some Eskimos take offense to being called Indian. One more thing, these people in the clip are my uncle, aunt and cousins. They fish and hunt so they may eat-this was shot in AK not Canada
You probably live in the city, where the ways of life is different, here the outdoors is a way of life so they show their children how to hunt and fish to carry on tradition
I think he didn't choose his words, well, I GUESS he meant they don't feel pain because of the fishing hook - obviously fish feel pain. As for the fish hook, depends on the fish mostly. If it penetrate sensitive tissue, it will cause pain. If it just penetrate some thin membrane it will not (like in the case of a black bass). And yes, I like fishing too.
thanks man..I actually never thought about comparing the two types of natives and mexicans, and their habitats, as they all look similar to me, but now I know. p.s: prick tube is catchy
I wish I lived in your shoes. I mean reading degrading, pathetic posts every day must be such an incredible ride. I'm glad you are fulfilling your potential.
well i do a lot of fishing. the fishing around me isnt that great either. if there was salmon that big in the rivers i fish i bet the banks would be lined with fisherman also, what surprised me is that it was a buncha of natives using fishing rods instead of dropping a net across the river like they normally do.....
I agree with your overall viewpoint that fishing is a fine & acceptable practice - One of my personal faves, in fact. I'm somewhat less convinced about your "pain vs damage" argument, But let's play "Devil's advocate" for a moment, & I'll put one simple question to you. What's the harm in a quick dispatch? Have the salmon whacker at the ready & use it with the appropriate force. No need to allow the fish to "sense damage", as you phrased. Respect the creatures you take for food.
Ive seen larger fish caught out of the Sacramento River. Ive landed 60 lb kings and a buddy of mine has caught an 80 lber. This fish didnt even look close O.o
What? Are you fucking kidding me? I live in Alaska. Every summer when the salmon start running every river near here has THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of salmon going up river to spawn. Every year all my friends, and family go and catch massive amounts of fish. Everyone cleans them, and throws whats left back into the ocean, so the cycle can continue. This has happened for hundreds upon hundreds of years. This is what feeds alot of my friends families. This is the circle of life.
I think it is awesome that you made your point with actual research. Very cool. But the point I am trying to argue for is that the PERCEPTION of this pain is extremely different in organisms with a developed frontal cortex and have a perception of self. Such a creature would know that "this horrible thing is happening to ME and may CONTINUE to happen to me. I may cease to exist now." The ability to think about yourself in pain, I would argue, is one of the things that makes it so horrible.
dude have you ever BEEN to alaska? it's kind of a big deal when the salmon are running and all the rivers look like this... also it's not exactly like a day in the park, you're liable to get attacked by bears who smell the fish. it's not like this year-round, just when the salmon are running like I said and it's regulated how much you can catch. have you ever EATEN salmon? maybe that would clear this up for you... yum.... salmon....
Beaks catching spawned out boots, still not as bad as the Fraser River, Peg Leg bar is a mile long of shoulder to shoulder, and at the scale bar in hope there has been stabbings between fisherman. now thats combat fishing
Alaskan fishing at its finest. This is the typical scene at the rivers. Most think: "Ahh, Alaska! Fish the tributaries and be one with nature... NOT! You have to fight for a spot on the Kenai. Not my idea of fishing... "Combat Fishing".
Somebody grab a beer, the wasabi, the soy sauce and a fillet knife! Some seaweed salad on the side would just be too much to ask for... but it would be nice!
we wuz there several yrs ago....it was a kick....you think going to Alaska you would get widl rivers and quiet, but here, its shoulder to shoulder fishing and you had about 6 ft to cast and catch...but it works...families come out all day.....
And that fish is the best!
How do they fit them into the cans?
You're up Ship Creek, but do you have a paddle?
I am proud to call myself a hippy because I stand for protecting the wilderness. Without what the wilderness has given us, America would literally be nothing. That king looked huge! Congrats to whoever caught it!
Nice fish! I wasn't much of a fan of Alaska until a few months ago. Now, I really want to go there.
How big was it ?
hooking or fishing?
how many people need to fish in the same
hole
where is this i live in alaska and i wanna go fishing there
ah this vid makes me miss anchorage. some of the best fishing and scenery in the world right in our back yards.
what is a bean backer?
discovery channel only shows the rural or inhabitant parts we have that stuff but not everywhere
Is this in ship creek
Yes it is
Wow, that's major competition for fishing space there -- I can imagine there's a lot of pushing and shoving going around the fishing areas.
NOTICE when you go to bass pro or scheels they sell FISH BATS! What are they used for? Take a guess
How big was the fish? My bro-in-law caught a King on the Kenai a couple of years ago weighed 56 lbs! Mmmmmm! Salmonnnnn!
looks like a around 25 30 pound fish. i think its around 10-15$ a pound in stores
How do I give a proper response to this...
know that. im from chilliwack, i hear the stories.
btw a couple years ago my brother landed a 42 lb. spring salmon in the vedder river.
Yeah, all these people are locals fishing purely to feed their families.
I'll believe that as its written on the internet and therefore must be true - thanks for your sage council.
so there must be a lot of casinos down there?
Wow...this is really combat fishing. I suspect that it is mostly locals and everyone knows every. Likely some bragging rights and competition but also some serious meat gathering for the year. Nice vid
IWantToFish
Holy crap that water is so clean and fresh looking, Alaska is so underrated.
Ever heard of catch an release
have they tried catching salmon bear grylles style?
How did i get here from xbox one unboxing?
I like the steps leading down to the water, makes it much safer to access for many people.
"HUGE" is a little bit of a stretch but I appreciate the enthusiasm :)
lol , hugh to him
i have tropical fish and when the convicts would mate they would get super aggresive and territorial, and the other species used to swim near them, but after a few weeks of getting little mini bites they stayed away, now they stay clear when theyre mating and dont even go near their side of the tank, so i think your wrong about them not feeling pain, they must do :P
the "up" salmon is quite a bit bigger than the "down" salmon by the looks of it.
pretty big fish.
Guy with the net handled it like a boss
Nice! Love catching kings
Huge fish! Great video.

"Survivor" you don't know the lifecycle of a Salmon. Plus that was a Native Alaskan Fisherman, I hope he is able to line 10 more up right along side that one...
That looks like like the bridge at Kenai Alaska.
That's pretty freakin big. I thought when salmon turned red, their flesh becomes inedible? Or is that some other kind of fish?
Nice fish but not really as "huge" as I expected. I've gill netted in Old Crow Yukon with my Uncle Shawn a couple of times and some of those kings needed two of us to carry them up to the house.
Hmm i'm wondering why there aint no salmons left in those rivers
Yes...these people who 'star' in this clip are Eskimo. They are not part of a clan or band. They are considered Alaskan Natives. lol there's this river outlet in kansas where there are just as many ppl if not more
Ahh the pristine wilderness of an overpass in Alaska..nice fish.
I laughed my ass off when the guy handed the kid the stick and he hit it, regular little tough guy.
I think he didn't choose his words, well, I GUESS he meant they don't feel pain because of the fishing hook - obviously fish feel pain.

And yes, I like fishing too.
so native alaskans (eskimos) are actually native american indians?
This is not over fishing..its wildlife managment. If it was over fishing actions would be taken to prevent fishing a certain species.
how did i get here from watching waterslides to river monsters? lol well back to going to water slides may end up here again
thanks man..I actually never thought about comparing the two types of natives and mexicans, and their habitats, as they all look similar to me, but now I know.
p.s: prick tube is catchy
It's very nice to meet you :^) You did a fine job landing that fish sir. You are the kinda guy that makes Alaska as cool as it is.
Looks like 30 pounds, that's no big deal. those fish get up to 60 70 pounds, in the Queen Charlotte islands they get up to 106 pounds.
i tend to do that a lot :P i went from watching spider videos to cat videos to shark and now salmon lol what a night
A little dark but nice! I don't have to combat fish, I have my own private spot here in CA.
I always fished further upstream....on Ft Richardson.... downstream were too many people....and too many kluches bumming smokes
that's only in some parts of Alaska human took out that land to build places for them, and northern lights are occasionally.
I wish I lived in your shoes. I mean reading degrading, pathetic posts every day must be such an incredible ride. I'm glad you are fulfilling your potential.
why are there so many people fishing at once?
most exciting vid on the i net!!!
what? would you rather the fish suffocate and die slowly, or have it die right away so it doesn't need to suffer?
There are many tribes in which the native peoples descend from. Aleut, Inuit, Eskimo, Yupik, etc.
well i do a lot of fishing. the fishing around me isnt that great either. if there was salmon that big in the rivers i fish i bet the banks would be lined with fisherman also, what surprised me is that it was a buncha of natives using fishing rods instead of dropping a net across the river like they normally do.....
Nice fish, but no thanks on the crowd. It's like that in downtown Richmond when the shad are running.
either that or the fishing season is only one day hahaha

This looks nothing like the alaska that I have seen on the discovery channel . Where are the northern lights, grizzly bears, bald eagles, and wolves?
Homes lol that was probably the funniest post I ever read...
are you an ecologist?
Wow down here in washougal caught a 75 pound chinook fricking giant
Salmon is some good eating fish... Had some the other day... Wise it was as fresh as this one here.
Ive seen larger fish caught out of the Sacramento River. Ive landed 60 lb kings and a buddy of mine has caught an 80 lber. This fish didnt even look close O.o
Hmm... when i read the wooden club part i was thinking of the flinstones for some reason

always go at that place... pretty fun...

that was by far the biggest king ive ever seen. and i fish in lake michigan once a week.
Man salmon is soo good to eat this made me hungry
maybe hes referring to the fact that the guy beats the fish with a stick, then hands the stick to his kid so the kid can beat it?
You are right not a sport rather a game..... The winner gets fish for dinner!
dude have you ever BEEN to alaska? it's kind of a big deal when the salmon are running and all the rivers look like this... also it's not exactly like a day in the park, you're liable to get attacked by bears who smell the fish. it's not like this year-round, just when the salmon are running like I said and it's regulated how much you can catch. have you ever EATEN salmon? maybe that would clear this up for you... yum.... salmon....
Another case of people ruining a fishing hole. Great catch.
You know your in Big Fish Land when you catch a 40+ pound salmon and the locals hardly lift an eyebrow.
AK is alaska as it says on the video. Then what are the indians doing in alaska?
and do u know how much salmon is worth? that has to be atleast 100$ maybe double triple that
Nice salmon, but it was a little dark. Good for the smoker!
You must be a biology professor. Good shit.
Damn it i miss Alaska now -_-, i never caught a king in ship creek but bird creek i always hit the mother load with silvers and humpies.
U obviously haven't seen the size of fish in ireland
Did you show your son and say, "This is why America is great, it lets us assure ourselves of our manliness by stepping on ants."?
Looks like a good time for sure!
Beaks catching spawned out boots, still not as bad as the Fraser River, Peg Leg bar is a mile long of shoulder to shoulder, and at the scale bar in hope there has been stabbings between fisherman. now thats combat fishing
@ostube111 whats wrong with that, for instance, i like hunting squirrels anf frying them, or put them in a stew
"the food-chain", ever heard of it??
The most entertaining thing about this video is the comment section.
what if you "kill it", then eat it?
Alaskan fishing at its finest. This is the typical scene at the rivers. Most think: "Ahh, Alaska! Fish the tributaries and be one with nature... NOT! You have to fight for a spot on the Kenai. Not my idea of fishing... "Combat Fishing".
aw man that's awesome. i wanna go fishing for kings.
Somebody grab a beer, the wasabi, the soy sauce and a fillet knife! Some seaweed salad on the side would just be too much to ask for... but it would be nice!
So crowded there, fishermans worst nightmare
2:22 the lady is like woooah but then you see the guy hit the fish i thought that was funny
