This is true, My mom worked at the head office as head of indoor catering and she opened over 36 Mr Biggs in the whole country, Her opinion is that, everything went under after selling to a foreign company and the conpany added some rules that gave franchisees a little freedom. Which instantly diminished the standard of service and atmosphere. My mom retired right after all that drama in cooperate. 🙃

Mr Biggs can still come back with a bang! With social media, you can get people excited and interested in your product, not to mention the sentimental value they still have in people’s hearts . They should focus on what made them beloved in the past: family time, fun time etc. their main focus should be on food combo packages (bringing a unique twist to our daily snacks too) , branded items (like refill coffee cups, lunch bags etc. basically let people get excited when they see that big letter B. Even though there are many restaurants now, there are only a few that are everywhere. Mr B can still be a nationwide sensation, if they focus on consistency and quality. Collaborating with another brand can also help (what they did with Mobil was superb and something like that can still be done)
I personally think the motivation is not there anymore. I wish some company with high spirit can buy the company and put in the necessary effort. Then, we would get that rebirth. Because they have a greater advantage due to their good past history as you said

I'm not certain they will want ti experiment this. Those with sentimental attachment have less desire for their signature foods like pies and sausages. The younger generation now have other favourites so cost-benefit analysis may show they may be in the loss

Another bitter truth is that the current restaurants in Nigeria aren't doing well either. Their foods taste is just average. Nothing super about them. I can cook better tasting foods than them.
In my opinion, Franchising was the beginning of the death of Mr. Biggs! The Quality of the company went so bad, you will almost see “Bukas” that had the same name of Mr. Biggs. Mr. Biggs was a big part of my childhood, I was disappointed to witness the compromised quality
Doesn't mean expansion through franchising is bad. Must be poor enforcement of standardization. Question, why opt for franchising if you won't ensure standardization?
Their biggest issue was quality control. once they had that initial boom from the franchising, they should have re-strategized to put emphasis on maintaining their standards with quality control and I suppose being active in the supply chain as well would have helped as well as using joint seminars and workshops to keep everyone on their toes and up to date. The Nigerian factor tho.
Thanks for this documentary. I had friends in the account department of UAC back then and a friend who was a major supplier of AGO to few Mr. Biggs outlet while I was a supplier for Sweet Sensation. The Nigerian factor of corruption within the workforce, inability to keep up with competition and lack of control on the quality of products killed the Mr. Biggs franchise.
I remember the day my dad took my brother and I to Mr Biggs... I was so happy I even took the nylon to school the next day , just to brag to my friends.... 😅😅😅
This is a brilliant analysis 👏👏👏 I grew up eating Mr Biggs in the 90’s and early 2000 before the family switched to Switch-Sensation(SS). I could recall vividly whenever I go with my mom to her office in Marina(Broad Street - the Mr Biggs outlet was inside National Oil filling station now known as ConOil) - I am assured of having a Mr. Biggs Lunch and Meat-pie as takeaway. Also, worthy of note is that I would get get to buy my favorite comic book - Super-Strikas(Shegz) - It was only Mr. Biggs that was selling or distributing it then… Until - the quality started dropping and as family we had to switch to SS, TFC(Tastee Fried Chicken), Tetrazinni, Tantalizers(a major competition). You gave a good and comprehensive analysis with the Brand dilution due to the franchise/expansion strategy.

Great video. This was an assignment I did in one of my courses during my MSc programme in Coventry University UK. Mr Biggs was a big part of my childhood.
The only Mr Biggs outlet that still maintains good standard and great meatpie up till now is that branch at Masha round about opposite Tantalizers surulere Lagos.
This was an excellent documentary! The graphics, the audio, the transitions,. everything! Mr Biggs was a huge part of my family's life. It's time has come and gone. There's too many other outlits, both big and small, to choose from for it to have any type of a meaningful revival.

It's very sad to see how Mr Bigg's has essentially disappeared from the Nigerian food scene, unfortunately competitors like Chicken Republic will make it very difficult for them to regain their place, but perhaps with a new strategy they could capture some market share.
Like MR Biggs unfortunately, Restaurant owners don’t understand the importance of maintaining quality across all outlets, what got you there is what will keep you there, that’s your brand…..that’s why any MegaChicken outlet you go too, you must jam queue, megachicken’s most popular meals are the yamarita and their spaghetti, I’ve eaten megachicken spagehtti and yamarita from all their branches in Lagos, and they all have that same unique taste….Lekki, ikota,festac, Ikeja…..same quality and sells out fast, same ethics upheld by BlackBell

You got a new subscriber with this content. 3 weeks ago, me and my friend pass through a Mr Biggs restaurant and i noticed it was shut down, the last time i visited the place was 2022 and it was still functioning so i was talking to my friend how Mr biggs an Tanterlizers has ran down in Nigeria. I wa just reminiscing about good all those when the mention of Mr Biggs alone give you dopamine rush to your brain. Highly Informative content, at first the MEAT PIE was out of this world. The first meat pie was and is still the best I've ever had. I think someone important left Mr Biggs with his/her secret recipe.
Once again, you blow my mind. You reach higher levels of excellence with each video. You are a bankable creator. I never knew all these about Mr Biggs until now. Didn't even know that there were others before Tantalizers. This is a reference material for MBA. Fast food outlets in Nigeria, based on my observations, are only interested in short-term (sieze the moment) profit-by-all-means strategy. Almost as if from the start they don't expect to last long. And because there is no serious regulation or consumer rights control, the total freedom to do as they like easily become their downfalls. KFC had strict franchise conditions that helped to sustain the original standard. Trans-generational business mindset/vision is generally lacking in Nigerian businesses, sadly. I hope people actually learn from this video. Did Tantalizers go down for a similar reason too?

Nice update bro, we learn everyday. Back then, after closing from sch trekking home we ll just enter Mr Biggs look @ pple buying things allow their AC to cool our body, then continue our trekking to the house.
Something that wasn't mentioned, but I saw it first hand: COVID also forced Mr. Bigg's to shut down a few branches, including in Eti-Osa (i.e Victoria Island and Lekki). They currently have a new branch at Awolowo Road, Ikoyi that I'm yet to visit, probably part of their "comeback" they announced on social media. They may be a footnote, but a case study is also warranted for other restaurants handled by UAC Restaurants, from their ice-cream shops to their chicken restaurant... that I honestly forgot the name of. Before shutting down, they would sell me the large versions of a chicken sandwich or ice-cream, saying that the regular sizes were not available. (I may be wrong, but was UAC also the franchisees of Nando's and Steers in Nigeria?)
Damn, this brings back childhood memories 😢. I remember as a little 3 yr old kid was taken to Mr Biggs to get ice cream and some meat pie. Back then I had already intended that I'd get some money on my own, to come to Mr Biggs when ever I wanted. I loved the smell and the Aura. It really shaped me as a child. But, Alas it was not to last. Not too long later, Mr Biggs was gone!😢

Mr Biggs was a part of my childhood but that relationship ended in 1999 when I decided to get a doughnut when I got into town very late, I was sold a fried burger bun which I only found out after getting home and was about to reheat it. This was at their terminus branch in Jos, plateau State

Mr Biggs was a great fast food brand those days !! My favourite was their scotch egg.
Same here as a 90s kid. Their scotch eggs were how I got to know about scotch eggs. Although, I switched from pies and scotch eggs to chicken in the 2000s.
What I really like about this video is the relatability of the voice-overs and the stock videos, it makes a lot of sense

It's very sad to see how Mr Bigg's has essentially disappeared from the Nigerian food scene, unfortunately competitors like Chicken Republic will make it very difficult for them to regain their place, but perhaps with a new strategy they could capture some market share.

Like MR Biggs unfortunately, Restaurant owners don’t understand the importance of maintaining quality across all outlets, what got you there is what will keep you there, that’s your brand…..that’s why any MegaChicken outlet you go too, you must jam queue, megachicken’s most popular meals are the yamarita and their spaghetti, I’ve eaten megachicken spagehtti and yamarita from all their branches in Lagos, and they all have that same unique taste….Lekki, ikota,festac, Ikeja…..same quality and sells out fast, same ethics upheld by BlackBell
Not heard of any of these outlets you've mentioned before. I'm in abuja,they must be operating only in lagos. They've not been in business long enough to prove themselves.

3 weeks ago, me and my friend pass through a Mr Biggs restaurant and i noticed it was shut down, the last time i visited the place was 2022 and it was still functioning so i was talking to my friend how Mr biggs an Tanterlizers has ran down in Nigeria. I wa just reminiscing about good all those when the mention of Mr Biggs alone give you dopamine rush to your brain.

Once again, you blow my mind. You reach higher levels of excellence with each video. You are a bankable creator. I never knew all these about Mr Biggs until now. Didn't even know that there were others before Tantalizers. This is a reference material for MBA.
Fast food outlets in Nigeria, based on my observations, are only interested in short-term (sieze the moment) profit-by-all-means strategy. Almost as if from the start they don't expect to last long. And because there is no serious regulation or consumer rights control, the total freedom to do as they like easily become their downfalls. KFC had strict franchise conditions that helped to sustain the original standard. Trans-generational business mindset/vision is generally lacking in Nigerian businesses, sadly. I hope people actually learn from this video.

Something that wasn't mentioned, but I saw it first hand: COVID also forced Mr. Bigg's to shut down a few branches, including in Eti-Osa (i.e Victoria Island and Lekki). They currently have a new branch at Awolowo Road, Ikoyi that I'm yet to visit, probably part of their "comeback" they announced on social media.
They may be a footnote, but a case study is also warranted for other restaurants handled by UAC Restaurants, from their ice-cream shops to their chicken restaurant... that I honestly forgot the name of. Before shutting down, they would sell me the large versions of a chicken sandwich or ice-cream, saying that the regular sizes were not available. (I may be wrong, but was UAC also the franchisees of Nando's and Steers in Nigeria?)

Back then I had already intended that I'd get some money on my own, to come to Mr Biggs when ever I wanted.
I loved the smell and the Aura. It really shaped me as a child.
But, Alas it was not to last.
Not too long later, Mr Biggs was gone!😢

Mr Biggs was a part of my childhood but that relationship ended in 1999 when I decided to get a doughnut when I got into town very late, I was sold a fried burger bun which I only found out after getting home and was about to reheat it. This was at their terminus branch in Jos, plateau State
