  • Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film featuring a mix of fact and fiction around Hollywood in 1969. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt star as fictional additions to the story around the time of the Manson family murders of rising star Sharon Tate and her friends. The ultimate ending is not quite the same as the historical account so expect the usual Tarantino exaggerated violence at that stage. There is plenty of bad language along the way during its two hours and forty minute running time but currently the best Tarantino film I've seen. I haven't seen them all though.
Aspect ratio approximately 2.40:1 and sound is DTS-HD 7.1.

Before 2019, “Inglourious Basterds” used to be my favorite Quentin Tarantino film, but once I got to see “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” ten years later, it absolutely topped “Basterds”. This is a wonderful looking movie from the performances to the writing to the cinematography to the production design. You cannot ask for a more meaningful tribute to a bygone era of cinema. Back when this was in theaters, I didn’t treat it as a new movie, but rather a legacy screening. Not only is this my favorite Tarantino film, but my favorite film of 2019. Great job on the review, John!

I still have most of his films to see so hopefully I'll enjoy one or two more almost as much as this one. I tend to be a little on edge with Mr. Tarantino's films as they can be a little offensive but this one didn't cause me any angst at all. I even enjoyed the over-the-top violent ending. I thought it was funny actually which is what he seems to want. John.

The Cinematography on this is so beautiful. The dreaminess. Not only that but it looks like an older movie. Cinematographer Robert Richardson is no slouch and did a great job on bringing it close to a film from 1969. I've seen this on 35mm. The detail in the faces is so high that it's almost like the actors are in the room with you. The textures of the print are delicious and at times it's like its painted. If you ever get the chance to see it on film John, I'd recommend it. The Prince Charles sometimes runs a 35mm. Now I just need to see the 70mm blowup, which to my knowledge has never played in the UK.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 месяца назад +1

From what you describe there David it sounds like the Director of Photography selected the finest grain stock available. That's the way to make a movie today because film stocks are so good that we're almost up to 65mm/70mm quality of old. It would be lovely to see a 70mm blow-up. Actually, it would be good to see a 35mm too. I wonder if all the 35mm prints were struck directly off the camera negative. Now that I've typed that, I wonder if the whole thing was finished on film or whether it was another edited in computer at 4K fudge and then printed back out to film. John.

There's an overall feel to this film that’s celebratory of that era of cinema in LA/Hollywood - glad you enjoyed it, John. The book is engaging also, and not a straight novelisation of the film - if you're invested in the Rick and Cliff characters, there's more to them in there. Hope you do consider reviewing more Tarantino films in due course. And I hope the rumours that his next film will be his last are just that.

Well, all three are superb, so you're in for a treat whichever you pick. Jackie Brown is unfairly underappreciated for some reason, but it's a delight. Basterds is thrilling, with cinema as the hero. Looking forward to whatever you review next.

I was middling on this when I first saw it, but couldn't stop thinking about it, which is something I can't say of Tarantino's other films. So I watched it again... and again, and now I think it's now my favourite of his films. It has a real heart to it, I might go as far as saying its beautiful despite the contradicting language and violence.
I have two big recommendations for you, first is Tarantino's novelization of the film, which has many extended and alternate scenes and managed to make me love the movie even more - in parts its even better than the movie, but it doesn't overshadow it in anyway. It feels like a proper, well thought out, companion piece to it. (It's great as an audiobook if you prefer). The second recommendation is the film, Model Shop from 1969 directed by Jacques Demy (Umbrellas of Cherbourg). It's very much the key influence to the film - a sort of day in the life of someone hanging out in 1969 Los Angeles and shares a very similar style and tone - minus the violence. Arrow video has it cheap on bluray, one of my favourite films that I saw last year.

    • @moviecollector5920

Good to hear from you Luke. I shall try to remember to look out for Model Shop. I don't think I've ever even heard of it let alone seen it. I no longer get time to read books though so even though you're the second person to recommend the novel I will probably never be able to enjoy it. If I see a CD or even cassette audio book though then that's a different matter. I could play a few minutes every night for a couple of months or so.

Hey john, glad you enjoyed this one as this one is probably his most palatable film. it’s funny you brought this one up during Clint Eastwood’s unforgiven and then mention Clint Eastwood again in this review it’s been my theory since the first viewing that Leonardo DiCaprio‘s character is loosely based on Clint Eastwood. Eastwood was a TV cowboy on Rawhide much like bounty law and then went and did the spaghetti westerns very similar although I’ve never heard that was the case officially. they did a great job capturing that time in history. I’m a big fan of movies that do that anyways john have a great one as always.👍

For sure Leonardo DiCaprio's character is based on Clint Eastwood. I think he's got more general references to actor's insecurities too and a little stammer which is probably based on someone. I got this on Blu-ray, and the dtsX is one of the most immersive soundtracks I've heard on my q600b soundbar with rears. The actual film is gripping from start to end, and looks amazing, like a time travel back to the sixties. The actual movie is fantastic, with great characters and direction. You don't see the actors just the movie, which is a rare thing, especially in this time of dire writing and badly rehashed studio classics. I've said nothing about the film, as I feel it should be an experience for the new viewer. Your reviews are always honest and informative 🙃

I love hear you mentioning your appreciation to the amount of work they put into the movie making it matched the 60's time period and how you compare it to the encapsulated time period of Last Night in Soho (which I can't recall off my head but maybe the 70's-80's?), that's another movie that I saw your review on, and I also picked up but haven't watched yet either, wonder if I should flip a coin, or just watch both because from what I've heard/seen from your reviews of them, and just based off the films that I like as well, I reckon there both slam dunks across the board! Last Night In Soho is set in 1965 and you get to drive through the West End of London in a Triumph TR4. It's only a short sequence but it's magic and sets the scene and the feel for the entire film. I'm a big Triumph fan so it probably has an even bigger effect on me but I do think that is movie making magic. I suspect Mr. Wright might have been influenced by Mr. Tarantino's film as there are similarities throughout. Mr. Tarantino's film is a film lover's movie though whereas Mr. Wright's is simply a good movie - a psychological thriller but in the end in that one, you have to draw your own conclusions because it's left to you to decide if it's all been real. I won't say any more as you haven't seen it. I hope you enjoy them both.

@@moviecollector5920 I suppose my guess on the timeframe of Last Night in Soho is "a little off" lol, suppose it goes to show just truly how little I know about the film, even though I saw enough of it (that being promotional trailers, your review, etc) that it warranted purchasing and eventually planning to watch, but man, just like imagining this scene your describing with words, it's almost akin to reading a book and imaging the scene playing back in your head, this beautiful Red Triumph TR4 (Red at least in my head can't speak for the film... yet...) driving down West End of London in 1965, this sounds like a sight to behold and I can't wait to watch the film even more so to see these descriptions and fantasies "come to screen" in Mr. Wright's Vision, also in regards to the similarities between Mr. Wright and Mr. Tarantino's films I definitely believe there is a large amount of validity to that comparison especially since they have been longtime friends, would surprise me if they borrowed from each other's "catalogue and ideas" if you will. Regardless, thanks for response, love hearing the technical and historical insight, and just film knowledge in general and have a good one!

Wow have the stars aligned since you uploaded this specific movie! Thanks to having a trip for a concert from Oregon to Hollywood on 4/20, I also have tickets to see this movie in midnight at Tarantino’s New Bev from his personal print! The last time I haven’t seen this was on 35mm print during its initial run. My best friend will be tagging along as well and this will be his first watch, so to prep him up we watched The Great Escape, Django(OG), and Fearless Vampire Killers. We also watched Enter The Dragon and Rosemary’s Baby a year back. The Lisan Al Gaib/The Emperor also heard my prayers since they announced an extended screening of Dune Part 2 imax 70MM. Despite being from a state where Dune was originated we only have a lie-max so I cannot believe out of my 26 years I’ll be achieving my bucketlist to see an actual imax 70mm screening on a REAL Imax. We also have tickets for other 35mm shows too that weekend including 3:10 to Yuma(original), a Pink Panther film written Blatty of Exorcist and Joe Pesci debut Family Enforcer on 16mm. Suffice to say I feel like a kid in a candy shop, this is my Wonka Glasgow experience lol! Thanks for an awesome review for this gem! Watched this while on my way to see The First Omen on 35MM! If interested later, I can tell you about Hollywood experiences after! Cheers! And yes “violence is fun Jen!” to quote the man himself lol- Chris

If you get the chance Chris, please ask Mr. Tarantino to ship his print over to me after the screening as I'd like to see it too! But I hate to disappoint you about the second Dune film because even though 15/70 IMAX prints have been struck it is still not genuine IMAX as it's a blow-up from 4K video. Don't expect too much as it's not going to look like TENET so you won't be getting the full, genuine IMAX experience just a facsimile of it but certainly not the real McCoy. It should still be good just not TENET good. But what a wonderful trip you're going to have. A film lover's adventure for sure. Have a great time.

@@moviecollector5920oh yeah for sure no doubt. I’ve seen Oppenheimer about three times regular 70MM plus participating on a 70mm film fest on the holidays at my art house theater. So I still have the film grain structure “look” in my head clear as day haha. It is the only place that can play that format along with it being a REAL Magnetic track sound system. But at least the benefits I know we’re getting from dune part two is that the film is entirely shot on imax along 40 min with the taller imax aspect ratio so that’s a plus compared to Nolan films, which is understandable however since those imax film stocks/cameras ain’t cheap. Nolan usually releases his films around my birthday so hoping I can make another bucketlist traveling out of state/country trip to see a real imax 70mm format. But suffice to say the fact I’m even having a chance to see an imax 70MM film print AT ALL is a monumental achievement for a part of my cinema bucketlist and I’m definitely gonna embrace it! To paraphrase a quote a bit “It’ll do for now pig, it’ll do” haha- George Miller’s Babe: Pig In The City

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 месяца назад

@@chrisv9419 I identified the "That'll do pig" quote immediately Chris. Dune Part Two isn't IMAX but I know they're using the name. The printed film format is IMAX but the truth of it is that it wasn't shot in IMAX. An IMAX film has to be shot and finished in IMAX which means 15/65 for shooting and 15/70 for printing. Anything else isn't the full Monty. Christopher Nolan's films tend to have around an hour of IMAX but Dunkirk might have been even more than that which within it's comparatively short running time might mean it's more impressive than TENET for some. TENET is another long film but I think it has even more IMAX in terms of minutes but not in terms of percentage of the completed film. INTERSTELLAR has a whole mix of film formats but about an hour of IMAX. OPPENHEIMER has about an hour overall but being a drama it doesn't quite have the same impact of the other three greats. THE DARK KNIGHT was abiout half an hour of IMAX and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES about an hour.

@@moviecollector5920true, I keep on forgetting too they listed as “filmed for imax” instead of “film on imax.” Even the new Joker film is listed “filmed for imax” so that’ll be interesting. At least in the end its gonna be great to see it in 1:9:1 and 40 minutes of 1:43:1 all the way through. I only got to see 1:9:1 lie-max films out of my entire life so I’m sure the 4K source print alone will blow me away. It will also be curious for me too seeing how the film grain will look since they did the “digital to print” optical for it. The First Omen on 35MM didn’t look too bad and in fact it definitely felt like I watched an old Italian horror, but I was also privileged to see Scott’s Napoleon on 70MM and since there wasn’t a “digital to film” process it looked WAY to weird for me. Hopefully the stars do align that I’ll experience a Nolan film on imax 70mm but I’ll definitely take note on the listings you did so I can pick the one that has the most minutes of the expanded ratio. In the end, Can’t wait to travel at Hollywood for a 4/20 concert toke with Tarantino and the worms on imax 70mm haha!

You're a film lover Pieter so I'm pretty confident you'll like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The Hateful Eight should look better than any other Tarantino film transferred to 4K video but the Blu-ray didn't impress me as much as it should have so we'll just have to wait and see. Perhaps my impression was because I found the film a little too much like a stage play and didn't like the few vulgarity parts of it.
I've had Le Cercle Rouge for about three years. I think it's a film that I'll appreciate more second time around as I found it a little strange the first time.
I don't know which films I'd like to see released on 4K. It's a question I'm often asked but I have most of my favourites on Super 8 so it's a little academic for me really. CONTACT would be nice. That looked spectacular in the cinema and great on DVD.

the Last Samurai, Munich, Born On The 4th Of July and especially The French Connection and the film that planted my love for movies: A Bridge Too Far as I witnessed it as a six year old with my parents when it was shot in my hometown Deventer and Redford, Connery and Hopkins literally walked past our house for several takes in the movie.

Will you be reviewing the new James Cameron 4K blu rays anytime soon? I love the grainy look of my Aliens blu ray but I’ve been on the fence about buying the 4K because of the grain removal and AI upscaling. There’s a lot of mixed reviews out there but I trust your judgment the most because of your knowledge of celluloid film. I’ve never seen The Abyss and I would love to see it for the first time in a way that’s faithful to its original presentation.

I'm not in any rush to see Aliens on video David as I've owned it on film for well over 30 years now and that's how I like to see it. But even if the 4K has had much re-processing it's likely it's going to look the best of all home video versions ever released. If you're happy with the Blu-ray though, stick with that one. The Abyss is a great film but only if you watch the original version as the re-edited longer version breaks the focus and turns it into another of those alien world domination things. The original release retains the confined, claustrophobic nature of the story until the ending which is a little rushed owing to all the nonsense having to be removed but it's still better that way. It's a great looking film and again, that's how I'm used to seeing it as I've had that one on film for about 30 years.

I probably would have purchased The Abyss if it had have been released over here but I'm not shelling out a lot on something I'll probably never watch all the way through as I have it on film.
Super 8 certainly isn't a kiddies film but it's got some of the ingredients that might appeal to children. It's a bit too intense for anyone about 13 or younger (possibly). I think the child stars in it are brilliant and that's a major reason for its success but the Super 8 home movie basis of the film is what really captivates me because it was life as I knew it back in the 1970's and beyond. To this date in fact.

2nd best Tarantino for me, with a culmination of all his work rolled into one. His homage to the 1960’s American movie dream and the ever changing expectations of the industry set against the backdrop of the innocence and relaxed thought process of the era. Also, the actor/stuntman relationship is written to perfection - and is perfectly encapsulated in the final sequence (stuntman does all the hard work whilst the actor gets the money shot).
I also knew the background of the Sharon Tate story, so it was Tarantino’s telling of alternate history (pretty much ever present in his films…) made me punch the theatrical air despite knowing the truth - another homage in Tarantino’s style.
Coupled with how filmic and beautiful the scenery is, the supporting cast (Timothy Olyphant is excellent) giving great work and a film to chill out and relax to, I feel Tarantino’s evokes the era in the pacing of the film - chilled.
10/10 for me. And the transfer is brilliant. Stand out scenes include the movie within a movie, Bruce Lee revisionist tribute and Al Pacino throttling the imaginary machine gun.

There's a lot to like, that's for sure. It recently had a cut down release on Super 8 but I don't think I've seen that one although the trailer was released when it was current and that looks terrific so if you are concerned about how it will look on 4K video disc it should look very good. I'm aware it's had much processing applied but I wouldn't worry about that as it will still look better than the LD and DVD.

I suspect you would like The Hateful Eight, aside from a horse & carriage scene, the remainder is set in a cabin with fleshed out likeable (even though some despicable) characters, who can you trust questions being asked, together with the usual Tarantino funny moments. Highly recommended... Definitely a more subdued, less complicated and expansive movie compared to the likes of Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs etc. Really need your thinking hat on with those to keep up with the twists and jumps back and forward in time.
Plus music from Ennio Morricone is always a bonus. I like watching films blind without trailers or looking them up prior and back then I thought it sounded a lot like the Thing and then after looking it up (and if I remember correct), its because it was The Thing leftover tracks (although not sure if leftover is the correct term, additional or alternate maybe).

I have the Blu-ray of The Hateful Eight Bob. I don't actually like the film. Sorry. But it may prove to be better as a 4K disc because it was a 65mm shoot and I was disappointed with the image quality of the Blu-ray so perhaps modern film scanning equipment will produce more successful results and that will enhance the enjoyment of the movie itself. It was too vulgar at times and that was a putter offer for me. John.

@@moviecollector5920 No need to apologise lol we are entitled to our personal opinions... Well at the moment we are anyway - The hate speech law here in Scotland is getting a bit weird. Nah, I wouldn't waste money on getting a 4k of it if the movie wasn't your jam. Direct those funds to something more to your tastes.
Speaking of Tarantino, I got a 4k AI upscale of Planet Terror (Tarantino was in it and it was directed by Robert Rodrigues and played as a double feature with Tarantinos Deathproof). Planet Terror has that grindhouse heavy grain/tearing filter effect and bizarrely the AI upscale took out that filter entirely, I scrubbed through the film and it looks to have completely changed it for the worse.
On the upscale stuff and out of sheer curiosity I attempted it myself and upscaled a pretty poor quality episode of Rik Mayall/Adrian Edmondsons Bottom (image source was poor quality, 682x570 resolution and small in file-size/quicker to process). Not going to lie and say its pristine 4k, but the quality difference over the original is substantially better - Albeit a 330mb file turned into 11.2gb. I would have done the rest of the episodes but it took a couple hours for a 20 minute episode, so a bit of a time sink.

I don't think it's the transfer Doug (actually, I'm not sure it ever is) it's just that the original shoot was so good and if you start with something good then you should end up with something good. Start with something slightly sub-standard and there's no way it can end up good. Then again, James Cameron may have belied that statement recently but all those films apart from perhaps Titanic, did look good on film. Titanic suffered from dodgy computer effects of the ship in the water which was a bit of a joke to look at on the big screen at the Odeon from a 70mm blow-up.

It looks just like a modern 35mm fine grain. It's full frame anamorphic so every available microbe of the image area is utilized and therefore finer grain than anything Super 35 or even flat 35mm masked down to 1.85:1. All films are scanned for video now though so they all have to have a little image noise reduction applied as the scanning process exacerbates film grain meaning it has to be reined back in to where it was or should be.

Picture looks fine to me. It technically also has HDR but doesn't go too far with it.
