I loved this movie in theaters, but can’t imagine streaming it on Peacock. 4K and Blu-ray are preferable these days for this kind of movie.
I can't watch anything streamed anymore. Crappy compressed quality ruins everything!
@@stretch90 I thought I was the only one. I only stream these days to take a look at Dolby vision when it is missing on the discs. I spend about 3 minutes and have to turn it off because the quality especially the sound is so bad. Compressed Atmos is a real joke.
@@a-v-karin7617 yeah the sound is so thin and empty. Streaming completely ruins the experience.
@@a-v-karin7617 Dolby Atmos is lossless. Dolby Digital (which is all streaming can handle) is lossy. (So basically a lossy 7.1.4.) So lossy Atmos vs lossless Atmos is about as easy a decision as DD/DTS vs Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HDMA. Not even a close call, the disc wins.
And also, Disney couldn’t mix sugar into coffee let alone mix a proper Atmos track for disc or streaming.

I pre-ordered this as soon as it was announced. I went to the theaters and was blown away, and was disappointed to hear it was a boxoffice failure. So when the disc hit physical I wanted to fully support it.

This film was absolutely astonishing, there was a lot of mixed reviews, but when I seen it in the cinema, it made me realise how viking films or shows should follow suit with it being traditional

Movie looks absolutely stunning in 4k, as far as im concerned eggers is 3 for 3 in my book
This was the first film I saw at a Dolbe enhanced theater, and it was a wonderful experience. I don’t have a 4k set-up, but the blu ray is still stunning and one of the most striking films I’ve seen. Definitely in my top 20 and on the edge of my top 10.
What do you mean by Dolby enhanced? Are you referring to “Dolby Cinema at AMC” ?

Loved this transfer and how he used all natural light even in the darkest scenes (using only the light from the fires, etc.). Just for fun I had to check out the stream on Peacock because I knew it would look like a hot mess. It didn’t disappoint (as in, it was as bad as expected) and proves once again why the disc needs to be the way you watch it! Another great review! Krueger and Myers approved!
Streaming is such trash. My wife was watching Twister the other day on Netflix. I only watched the first few minutes but the print was disgusting, strewn with near-constant dirt. My Blu of the film is somewhat dated but still drastically superior.

The only stuff I watch on Netflix is stuff that isn’t on disc. Why settle when I don’t have to?
As for Twister, why that hasn’t come to 4K yet is a mystery I can’t figure out.

This was a day 1 purchase for me. Saw it in Dolby opening weekend and it’s my favorite Hollywood movie of this year easily. Saw it again at my local art house and then watched the 4K disc with the commentary. The special features were nice for a new release and I loved the picture/sound. 10/10 all around

@@nosuchthing8 There would be less quality, but it wouldn’t be as bad as streaming where it’s all crushed to hell. Besides, if you wait until Black Friday, this will be $15-$20.

I watched Dr. Strange on streaming yesterday. And it looked better than most of the 4k Blus I have. I was astonished by the picture quality, and having IMAX enhanced really helps. This is still not the case with a lot of streaming but it proves they can do it if they want to. And it proves it is coming.
I just bought it today in 4K. Streaming just doesn't hold a candle to the full quality of what a physical disc can provide. It should look amazing on my Sony 4K OLED.
Streaming doesn’t even stack upto Blu-Ray in my experience. 4K is just overkill for destroying streams.

Man, excellent review, thank you. I just got into blu rays and 4k blu rays a few months ago and my very first 4k disc purchase was The Revenant, a film tailor made for the 4k disc, very similar probably to The Northman, i.e. lots of great outdoor scenery with natural lighting, often times at night and dawn/dusk.
Same here, 1st 4K Blu-ray disc was The Revenant back in 2016! Although I’ve been collecting Blu-ray’s since 2012 and my 1st Blu-ray was Red Dawn lol. I started on 4K collecting a couple years ago😎🤙🏻

I saw this movie in early May at the cinema and loved it..unfortunately this was not a box office success that it should of been and with a great cast..got it on 4k disc and wow the 4k transfer is brilliant with dolby vision and the dolby atmos sound is phenomenal..I recommend on buying this on 4k disc..great video jeff keep them coming mate...👍

I rented this movie on prime video when it came out. I honestly think the dark sense in this film looked pretty good even streaming it. But definitely looking forward getting the 4K disk!

Just watched this for the first time on a 4k disc.
WOW! I think this is a true masterpiece and his best work. Beautiful cinematography and the way he represents Norse mythology is awesome.
Saw this in the theater and really loved it. I got the 4K disc on release day, although I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I'm on vacation this coming week, and one of the plans is to catch up on some of the unwatched movies that have been piling up in my collection and this may very well be one of them.

Just ordered it with your link! Been waiting for your review. I knew as soon as I saw the trailer, it would look awful on streaming. Especially on my LED TV with crappy black levels.
I waited nearly a month for this film to be in stock again and it was well worth the wait. I was not able to see it in theaters and I did not want to watch it on a streaming service. I only watched one trailer for this film and went in completely blind. I was blown away by how great it was. Definitely one of my favorite films of the year and the 4k is gorgeous.

I had that same problem with Obi-Wan Kenobi. the 6th episode where they had night scenes. I couldn't see anything. it was all washed out in black. I didn't know streaming can't handle night scenes?! I do remember hearing about the Game of Thrones episode.
It’s amazing that I started to collect physical media only recently and now when I stream anything I get pulled out of movie because I see blurriness especially in fast pace scenes. Lol I have awesome internet too. I used to be able to save money but now I’m obsessed.

What about streaming on Apple TV on 4k or Dobly Vision? I find that the image quality that way is really good.

Im glad you addressed streaming this on Peacock Jeff. I saw this in theaters and i did not get passed the opening moments when i decided to stream it. I turned it off. The soundtrack was full force and loud in theaters and in streaming, even on my atmos system it was weak! Will def be picking the 4k disk up!

I remember streaming GOT and thought my TV blacked out when there was a dark night scene lol
So many people streamed that episode that they all complained that “nothing was on the screen, why was it filmed like this?” Well, it was on screen, but the stream just obliterated the detail. I just told someone else watching an epic show or an epic movie on a stream is like listening to Handel’s Messiah on a kazoo, because the quality loss is that staggering.

Love the new setup. Though I love snooping through your shelves during reviews, Michael and Freddy are better. If you don’t stay in that spot permanently, at least use it for horror movies. :)

I really wanted the steelbook from zavvi. Loved that artwork compared to the standard movie poster version.
You should’ve seen this in the theater.
I don't know why it says "Collectors Edition" I work in retail and I saw the words "Collectors Edition" on the Blu-Ray and the DVD. Same thing on Ambulance and The Bad Guys. I don't know why Universal are putting it on everything. Just a little fact I should put that it is not only on the 4k version. This seems to be a real Disney moment.
Btw, saw The Northman twice in theaters, loved it, #3 film of 2022 in my opinion, and the disc is easily demo quality and in my top ten 4k Discs. The best 4k disc of the year other than Dune.
They’re just following Disney’s lead. A lot of Disney’s coasters had Ultimate Collector’s Edition on them too. To date I haven’t bought one of them. 🤣🤣🤣
My Best Buy only had the Blu-ray so I just settled for that. This review makes me wish I’d searched a little more

This is the only film I’ve ever walked out of so I’m not sure I’ll ever pick this up on Physical.
So far the only two movies I ever bailed on are Foodfight! and Caligula. The Northman couldn’t be as bad as those two if it tried.
The Northman was the most raw movie I've seen since Logan in 2017. It was so good that The Critical Drinker didn't just recommend it, but also added this subtitle to his review title: "We Need More Movies Like This". Heck yeah! We definitely need more movies like The Northman!

Thanks for this, Jeff! I have been wondering about the movie. As much as I shouldn't stream it, I might just to see if I like the movie. I don't want to fork out the $$ and not like it. I am weird when it comes to slow-burn movies. Yes, I easily get bored and shut off movies from time to time. But as long as I find it interesting, I will keep watching. But, yet, I have no problem sitting through 4 hours of Dances With Wolves. So, yeah, I am weird! This looks like a good movie. But I did not like the Vikings show. I remember watching about 8 episodes before quitting. Even all the violence couldn't keep me watching. LOL. I don't stream many movies. I cam count on one hand the number I have watched. Halloween Kills (after I had already seen at theater) I watched a couple times streaming until I got the 4K.Most recently Ambulance. Looked great but sounded like shit! I Just can't afford getting these new releases when they come out. There are so many I want, so have to be selective. I end up buying on ebay, looking for for copies without slipcovers and digital codes. I have saved a lot of money over the last couple of years doing it that way. Again, thanks! I appreciate your reviews...not only the audio/video aspect, but thoughts on movies as well.
I honestly believe that if you buy it on AppleTV that it’s not bad. If you think HBO has about 16b/s however AppleTV is 42b/s. So honestly it’s a big improvement, I personally had no issue watching it. However a 4K fist is 82b/s so nearly double e amount. But for half the price on AppleTV for half the bits, I’m a huge 4K person. But honestly didn’t have a problem with Apple TV. Usually ONLY watch things on disc but I thought I’d watch this film though AppleTV. I was happy :)
Just watched this last night. Solid. Only thing i didnt like was some of the fight choreography looked like fight choreography instead of hard hitting realistic fighting.
Have you seen the 4K of Shadow? Has some superb choreographed fight scenes. It's Oldboy meets Crouching Tiger and best watched knowing little about the plot.
