    Buy not buying Disney discs, the goal is actually that we do want them to stop making them. Let’s have them stop, and let someone with half a clue (Kino, Shout, Arrow) license the movies out and release them on their own.

      @DaleFrewaldt 2 года назад +5

      @@mikeamizzle It's the same reason Disney killed Disney Interactive. They could have easily continue developing interactive software in house, and it would have been easy for them to do so. But the overhead and costs associated with the development arm were more than they could continue to justify, so they closed shop and began licensing their IP to games publishers.
      I'm sure as the physical media realm mellows and Disney+ continues to take on it's own market share of the streaming pie, they'll look to cut costs in distribution elsewhere in their film library. One simple place would be to license their films to distributors, rather than take on the costs of distributing on their own.

      To be fair to them, it's the mainstream medium right now, even more so than theatrical releases. Physical media is a niche market. Not many people can see the difference (and I'll be honest, I can't see it too well either unless it's placed side by side). You need a 4k player, you need to buy the disc for each movie you're going to watch.
      With streaming you need a screen and an internet connection to have access to every movie they ever made. And for a business model, it's recurring payments in perpetuity rather than a couple one time purchases. Even if they release four 4k discs a year averaging $25 each, that's still less money than a $10 a month subscription for Disney+. So both the widespread casual consumer and Disney benefit from the streaming service.
      All that being said, I didnt spend $15,000 on a home theater setup to experience sub-par quality video/audio and thus I am extremely disappointed in this release considering it's one of my favorite movies of all time. I wish they would at least put more effort into the release if they are already doing it.

    Digital Internegatives are always going to have this problem. It’s bad on two levels. First the film dailies are scanned at 2k 10bit. Second the film was shot super 35 which uses only half of the resolution of the film. The DI is finished in 2k and filmed out back onto film. These negatives are pretty useless for remaster. Typically a studio will want to use the DI files to do the remaster. The dirty little secret is that most of the studios did not archive or have bad archives of the DI. Judging by your screen grabs they chose to Uprez their current HD master, thus the reason you see so much artifacting. Remember, you can’t make something from nothing. They stretch the colors to fit into the rec2020 colorspace and have flatten them out to make them accurate. The resolution exposes the flaws, so they used noise reduction. All of this equals a bad 4k product. To do this properly would have been very expensive and lots of studios are having this problem with titles from this era.

    Despite having only a basic HD setup as a home theatre I have stuck with 1080p optical releases after replacing my collection for the 2nd time (VHS - DVD - BD) as following an initial lack of enthusiasm for the recent 3D revival a decade ago, personally finding Real 3D too dark despite Avatar being still impressive and more importantly, how the transition to digital projection degraded the standard movie image. So after upgrading to a 3DTV I was staggered at how much better it was than the cinema, the backlight proving all the difference. I started waiting for the home release to premier so many films until a new cinema built close to me included an IMAX theatre in one of the auditoriums, giving me reason to find the theatrical experience whether IMAX, IMAX 3D or optimised for the format the top experience again.

    What worries me about crap like this is that it's completely intentional. The packaging of the 5 disc set is very bare-bones and the discs have very simple static menus, unlike the Blu-rays which had, at the time, very attractive animated menus which only goes to show how much effort Disney USED to put into home video releases.
      The HDR /Dolby Vision grading on the movies have an over abundant reliance on teal colouring and everything just seems dull and soft in comparison with the original Blu-rays.
      The audio also seems less dynamic, with the bass frequencies appearing weaker than the Blu-rays as well.
