  • Building a cross cut sled for your table saw is almost a like woodworkers right of passage.
    There are plenty of videos out there showing you how to build the ultimate one but in this video I hope to show you that you can build them at any budget and scale up the features as you can afford.
    *Calculations*
    Error per unit or EPU (mm or inch)
    ((A - B) / 4) / Length = EPU
    EPU x distance from pivot = total distance to move the fence
    positive (+) number = move the fence away from yourself
    negative (-) = move the fence towards yourself
    Parts used in the sled:
    Plastic runners - amzn.to/3Qq85fL (If in New Zealand - www.carbatec.co.nz/product/28...)
    Stop blocks / wide t-track / steel rulers - www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...
    Hold down clamps - kmtools.com/collections/corne... (Amazon alternative: amzn.to/39A61RU)
    T-track - kmtools.com/collections/stop-...
    An alternative stop block that I will use in a future build - kmtools.com/collections/stop-...
    Some of my tools:
    Router - amzn.to/39B8vj2
    Pocket hole jig - amzn.to/3DxARVG
    Woodpeckers stainless steel squares - www.woodpeck.com/woodpeckers-...
    Planer/Thicknesser - www.carbatec.co.nz/product/36...
    Cabinet Saw - www.carbatec.co.nz/product/17...
    Jig Saw - amzn.to/3j0Eom8
    Circular Saw - amzn.to/3v9Nrab
    Brad point bits - amzn.to/3K6rnmK and amzn.to/3x7uAie
    Right angle clamps - amzn.to/3uP9zX8

    Nice one Chris! I have been looking for a way to upgrade my cross cut sled, and I think I’ve just happened across it… 👀
    Your video is possibly the most comprehensive and easily followed example, in my opinion… 👍🏻
    And I even understood your clearly set out description of the dreaded ‘5 cut method’… 🤔 ✅
    Thank you for sharing your working on your sled with us and making it easy for us to work from, another sub well earned!… 👏🏻

    Great, simple to follow instructions without a bunch of superfluous nonsense. I like your way of presenting. Thanks and subscribed.

    Nicely done. Very good description of the construction methods and material. I could have done without the music. It's distracting. Otherwise I rate this video excellent. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

      Thanks Krzystof 😊
      I’m a hobbyist, my day job is a Software Architect, I love woodworking because it gets me away from the screen to build something physical 🤩

      @@macsworkshop that's amazing! I picked up woodworking for exactly same reasons as my day job is also building software. Btw your camera angles, audio quality and background music is great.

    You are very good, Sir. This is the second of your videos I have watched and from this you have given me an idea for the workbench. Like cross cut sleds, workbenches are the same to me, I have built multiple units over the years and have not really liked any of them. Also I really like the way you explained the 5 cut method. BYW - You were using some kind of drill stop in this video, could you tell me what it is called? Thank you, Sir.

      Thanks Dennis
      If drill stop you are referring to is the drill that countersinks a hole while drilling it, I wouldn't recommend the one in that video, I have since bought this one and its much better - amzn.to/3UmxOs8

    Sweet video mate. I have a question. Every video that I have watched with the 5 cut method shows how to calculate the error. But everyone says to redo it to check and nearly always it’s never perfect. I know we are talking hairs here but being a roof carpenter and always working with angles I think the pivot point is wrong. In a perfect world I think it should be pivoting in the middle of the fence right where the blade strikes the front fence. Would like to see if this works better. What are your thought? 😊

      Its called Traditional Wax by u beaut polishes but I think it may be an New Zealand/Australia thing

      I have actually started using it on my jointer and it works really well

      @macsworkshop thanks for that, I'm in Chch so I'll track it down. So much of what you see recommended is US based so it's hard to know what to get here.
      I have a Carbatec scroll saw I picked up for a bargain from a cash converters auction, obviously had no idea of its true worth. Nice but of gear...

    Good vid although, I think you moved your fence the wrong way.
    I've done this myself & I had to move the fence back toward myself from a positive number which, I subsequently verified with another five cut test.

    Hi Chris, Was there an issue with the stop block you originally used on the crosscut sled?

    • @macsworkshop
      @macsworkshop  Год назад

      Hey George, the only stop blocks I have purchased are the ones you see in the video and I also bought a Katz Mosus stop block for my router table
      I’ve got no complaints about any of them 😊

    4:31 Did I just notice the far end of the left strip shifting while you drilled?

    • @macsworkshop
      @macsworkshop  Год назад +1

      Reviewing the video, it does look like it, all I can say is maybe I shifted it back because as you can see when its all screwed together, it slides nicely in the miter slots

    loved the fact you screwed the runners on with a hand held screwdriver, that is classy and saves a lot of mistakes that can be made using a cordless drill, don't get me wrong I think the cordless drill is one if the best tool ever

    Divide by 4 assumes a square piece, but the piece in this video is not a square.

    • @davidlawes4759
      @davidlawes4759 Год назад +2

      No, divide by 4 because there are 4 corners (4 angles). Although the measurements are done in mm, the adjustments affect the angles, the goal being to get the fence 90° to the blade.
