Hi Navie, when I try to download this my Windows Security kicks in and says 'severe virus threat'. Obviously I'm assuming this is a mistake and that its actually fine, and am wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
Dude this is awesome! Reminds me of Mobb Deep. If you played this for me without context, I'd believe it was made in the 90s, amazing work homie. Captured that spooky nostalgic vibe perfectly
Keep in mind with the drums needing to be offbeat thing…if you’re using a chopped up sample, not all of those pieces are going to actually hit on the grid you place them. Some of them will be late and some right beat and some the way it’s cut will have some of the beginning chopped off. So, you’ll be getting that off beat feel even if you place all the midi notes on grid. Well not even feel, it will be slightly off here and there.
Fully intend to background play your channel for a few days. You've always been one of my favorite beat making channels, you have solid intro information, concise explanations, and your format is consistent and stands out. Keep it up. Here to run your watch time through the roof, because, well... you know why.
Nav, you're by far the best RUclipsr when it comes to beat making 💯 Watching your tutorials has definitely made an impactful improvement in my beat making journey. Salute 🫡
We used to use the fader because we had limited memory so it would make the sample shorter in essence taking less memory. We can always adjust the pitch in the MPC
Great 90s vibe and sampling technique tutorial Video, it sounded and felt 90s, but one think that we should know is that even though there was limited amount of sampling time in the samplers back then, and because of that producer used to have and extra sampler or 2, to navigate that problem, like for example some producer used to have 2 or 3 extra 1200 or mpc's, some used to combine the 1200 or the an mpc with the akai s950 basically expanding the sample time limitations which it means there was no limitations if you had the cash to afford for the expansion, basically what im saying is that even though the samplers was limited in 90s, producers knew how to tackle that problem by getting and having more samplers to expand the sampling time limitations
When it comes to changing the speed and pitch, one technique I'd recomend if you want to add more sounds is to speed up / slow down the sample in resample mode, then change to a mode where you can independently control the pitch and try and match it to the nearest semitone. Just helps with making sure the sample isnt out of tune when you add other sounds
@NavieD: Just want you to know that I really appreciate your content. You do a great job explaining everything and your editing and video production is top notch (really, best in class right there with Sanjay). I'm sad and annoyed that someone else is out there ripping off your content (even down to the thumbnails) but providing sub-par advice literally hours after you post a new video. That person is clearly trying to game the algorithm to bite your success and should be ashamed. Please keep up the good work and don't let them get you down.
Navie D, I just received an E-mail saying that your birthday is today (probably). happy birthday! you helped me a lot and made me become a much better producer.
14:14 D# sounded better, in my opinion, as there was nothing else in the beat it had to compete with frequency wise. I also thought it sounded more harmonically interesting when layered with the other instruments. Great beat and tutorial nonetheless.
I see I’m not the only one who felt he could’ve left the sample as is. I understand wanting to have the keys in the same family but sometimes you gotta go with what feels right and that sample felt right even without any adjustments.
It’s a shame you didn’t release this track. Also, I love that 90s boom-bap type of style and you made it look way too damn easy to make this. I wish I had an ear for sampling. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Very cool vid. As someone that made beats in the "old school" A. This is very Lord Finesse sounding. B. Leaving the piano sample off key is what made classic HipHop grimey. There is also a cool sp1200 software that can cut your plugin time down. I think it's called eSP1200 Low Hiss . cheers~
Ableton Tuner is also an option for identifying the notes in a sample, it's not as user friendly as your new software though. A workaround is to simply label each of your slices once you found the key.
Thank you Navie you are one of the best when comes to tutorials and that Notegrabber is great tool I already uninstalled Melodyne and also thank you for dope Drum Breaks
this is a great video & one of the only ones where by the end you actually made what you said you would make. the only note I would add is that **sometimes** a sample being off-key or slightly out of tune is accurate since they were doing it by ear. of course be aware that it will probably sound spooky lol.
I try to save sample excesses in their own folder. Like, I like the bells for one purpose but the slow percussion at the end sounds great too. Could be good for something in the future. Always good to keep things.
Peace. Your videos are always inspirational. I’m glad I’m subscribed to your channel. Question. I see that on all your videos you use Fruity loops as your daw or primary beat production studio. Does this method work with the MPC X? And is there a big difference between the SP950 plug and Decimort plugin? Which is better?
Incredible work! I’m not sure that a lot of people are aware of the pitching up & down technique. I screamed with the horns!!!! Pete Rock might come looking for you 😂
Dits so good tobsee the process step by step with explanation of whag works and whats better. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. Would youvsiggest a beginner or amateur to use notegrabber or would it be better to kind work on the basics first, playing by ear, theory etc. Does it kind of take away from gaining skill in production or is it more of a shortcut that wont affect growth? Im asking beacuse my guitar teacher always was on my case for using tabs and wante dme to "feel" note.Hope im making sense.
Making 90s beat and using analogue age techniques are 2 totally different things. Most of the tech like time stretching pitch correction etc were all available towards the end of the 90s even for the bedroom producer. What 90s hardware is what made most of the difference. The different samplers had unique characteristics in terms of sound quality and as well as limitations. Mostly the boom bap era was about how each producer found their own way of harnessing each sampler's super powers and work arounds on the limitations that gave the sound its unique flavour. TBH with modern software and hardware you can replicate the feel (maybe not the sound of each sampler) and stretch the technique further as most limitations of old hardware have been overcome, plus cool things stem separation which means you capture even more sounds from a sample.
@@eternalcrystalballant that takes time and isn't as creative. I got serato but my FL was creatively obtained and probably is why my serato isn't working
2:45 asking for my kid who wants to start fiddling around with samples, which sampling app is this? Google doesn’t give me images that look like this and I don’t know anything about this. Thanks.
Hey Navie, really dope vid! Can you make a comprehensive video on mixing and mastering for Hip Hop beats (from 90s beats to contemporary boombap beats)... a solid mixing and mastering template/framework to build from would be highly appreciated!
Hey man, I loved your tutorial. However I think it would be a little more helpful if you enabled and adjusted the plugins while the beat was playing. It would give the viewer a better feel on how those adjustments impact the sound. For example with the compressor or at 14:26. It's hard to notice what exactly sounds different because the last time we heard the beat might be a cut and a few seconds away.
Please keep teaching these people because each day that goes by and I hear trash beats of today, I got insane. Producers, pump out those 90's beats, let's split publishing, we both promote the track, let's eat...simple (or so you thought lol).
Amazing beat. I don't rap but i can picture a song about something really different I can imagine an Egyptian street vendor working after midnight and rapping about the different personalities that bought from him that night. The one sketchy dude with blood on his shoes. The drugged out teen fighting a seizure. The religious old guy calling him the devil and so on.
Wait... the speed control on the turntable is not used to slow down the record but to speed it up so as to conserve limited sample memory in the sampler ... Finding the right BPM is done in the sampler b
Hey! Newbie here, but how does he do the sample stretch thingy and it changes the speed and tempo at 2:13 ?? I'd appreciate it greatly if someone helped me out! Thanks!! =)
There's something I want to know. Is it unnecessary to pay attention to anti-aliasing when making dirty, oldschool beats? Normally I stay away from plugins that cause aliasing. But in this genre, does it lose its importance since we want to consciously distort the sound?

@Eazy_mani Yeah I understood. I'm saying that you can change the pitch by changing the speed in serato sample
I echoed this same sentiment 👍🏾
Just turn off the sync button in Serato for the “old skool” sampling fader trick as you call it

That's that on and off beat type style I do also, but can't make everything the same. GREAT VIDEO BECAUSE THE HAD LESS SOMEWHAT AND SOUNDED BETTER
I love sampling this way. That’s why I like sampling in maschine and just changing the pitch to fit my drum loop .
One of your best videos yet! You really nailed the 90's sound. A lot of people overprocess the drums and make them way to loose for real 90's boom bap
Finally someone who's not forcing everyone to put their drums off beat goddamn
Whos ever forced you to make something a certain way?
Because the drums sample is already based on a pattern that is not playing precisely on the grid. 😅
