I’m a mid 40’s DJ from LA who was playing trance in clubs in the early 2000’s. This song absolutely changed everything. Very few songs have done this. This may have been the most important song for the breakthrough of mainstream trance.
The fact that the guy knows the name of the designer of his album art so many years later just speaks to how good a person they are, recognising other people's contributions. Seems like a really good bloke honestly...
Why would he not remember the name of the person who essentially came up with his artist name as we know it? It’s a pivotal moment in his career. (He does seem like a nice guy, I’m not suggesting he isn’t.)
I was a bartender in a niteclub when Sandstorm came out. That track was so huge. I remember at the time, the Nokia 3210 had come out and it allowed you to create your own ringtones by manually typing in the notes in the little ringtone editor. Literally everyone I worked with in that niteclub had their ringtone set to Sandstorm. 1997 - 2002 was the peak of dance music for me. So many bangers came out during that era.
One of the most fun and genuine individuals you'll ever meet in the industry. Was honored to do an event with him many years ago. I felt bad the crowd didn't feel him (it was when rap/R&B/hip-hop was all over the clubs) but it was a great experience to meet Darude. I will say his success is well-deserved.
i appreciated hip hop/rap for the beat but the most of the message i could never vibe with. trance on the other hand had a mysterious, uplifting, and happy feel to it - i much better vibed with that: peace, love, unity, and respect.
The ultimate sports song. I’m a play by play announcer for my high school and college, and this song plays on my broadcasts after every touchdown. I always have it on full blast on my computer every Friday night and Saturday afternoon
Still gaming to this day but them days were special! new, exciting and so micro sized and personal compared to todays enormous saturated online gaming community!
Feel the beat was way better than Sandstorm I have always thought. Nevertheless, Darude is a top tier producer and DJ. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live. He puts on a helluva show! He was also a ton of fun to watch on Twitch back in the covid days.
Absolute legend and one of the more down to earth artists, remember having a great conversation with him when playing the same show in 2018. Glad to see DJ Mag run this story!
I know sandstorm has been memed into oblivion now but that song is THE definition of a classic. I can even remember the time I first heard it which is no small feat because of all the various chemicals I had taken that night lol. I was amazed at what I had heard that night. That song felt like nothing else that was out at the time back then. Still to this day I smile when I hear it randomly. Superb song! Since I see darude posting in here, I just want to say thanks for the amazing memories sir!
I was scared there would be no mention of Jaakko. Happy to see he was in the video :) He's responsible of so many classic productions like Freestyler and Stomp to my Beat. He deserves SO MUCH praise.
I kept following House music and never got into Trance. But I must admit, this is one of the greatest and biggest dance tracks ever, it's timeless and has brought so much joy to so many people. It easily deserved to be in featured in this series. A track that has shaped history and especially the lives of its fans.
Epic when he came to the University of South Carolina to DJ his song where they use it for intro and after every touchdown. 85,000 people gyrating to his live music and the house light show, phenomenal.
I'm 54 so I've been behind the Sandstorm curve, but I do remember the first time I heard the name when asking for a title of a song on a RUclips video and being told "Darude Sandstorm" as a prank comment. Since then I'm a big fan of this track.
Hearing this song in Helsinki at Finland's 100th year independence celebration was really great. The bass drop was timed perfectly when the clock hit midnight and it was a powerful experience

I still remember hearing this for the first time and all the times after. Good memories. Introduced my kids to it all these years later. My son loves dancing to it. Forever Darude Sandstorm!
Like everyone, Sandstorm turned my ear to Darude, then Feel the Beat made me stand up and listen. But if I was to pick favourite Darude tracks, it would be anything from the Rush album. That and Label This! Showed the depth of emotion that Darude could put into his songs.
I know people love to bag on the song and use it as a joke response now but the song still gives me chills. It was one of the first anthems I got to drop when I was playing Big Room house venues and it brings back such awesome memories. Huge thanks to Darude for that.
What a decent guy. That synth riff stood out amongst a lot of similar-sounding tracks of the time. I remember hearing it on Radio One, and it was one of those tracks which I couldn’t wait for the release date, so that I could go to buy the CD Single.

I was a huge trance head when this tune came out in Finland and thought it was terrible at first. It wasn't until I heard it played out in the club when I realised what a banger of a tune it was.
Same. I thought it was mediocre until it played in the club and every inch of my skin went cold and then I couldn't stop jumping... it was amazing. I'll never forget it.

I was fortunate to live and work in Helsinki for 6 months in 2000 and this playing in the clubs there was epic. Great to hear the story behind it from the man himself.
The first time I heard the song I was listening to MunchMusic, and the first CD I ever owned was the Canadian release of Sandstorm which I guess is the 'Special Edition'. I was 16. It got me through my first summer jobs, led me into producing and DJ'ing. And is still a nice classic I like to throw on when I need to be pumped up. Even later, when it become a bit of a meme, people who hear the song hear a bang'er. Thanks, VV and JS16 for shaping this Canadian kid life just a little.
I’ve always heard that “Yamaha RM1x groovebox was used by Darude” and indeed it does show up in the old clips of him here. My first real hardware back in 2003
I remember when it premiered and watching the video on VIVA or MTV, and thinking how freaking awesome choon that is. It was what got me to love electronic music, and Trance in particular. Thank you Mr. Darude, I hope you are doing well, and I hope you know that shitton of people still love "Sandstorm" unironically, for the banger it is
I remember this track coming out and it was some years I've been trying my darnest to keep following the industry - even though I was broke as a teen. I remember feeling at release that this was not the most emotional or complex stuff I've listened to, but it was very cool. Soon after I was ready to jump in with everyone else with the hype as this is just so energizing on so many levels. Absolute CLASSIC! The story, as told here, is just so cool! Honestly, back in the day people couldn't dream of learning about this stuff....
Canadian of Finnish roots checking in here. First heard this at the first-ever middle school dance I went to in the spring of 2001. Never forgot the blue lights the hired DJ used as this song blasted through my middle school cafeteria, all while I’m standing there just FASCINATED by this song, even as a cute girl was trying to get my attention lol. Later on that summer I picked up a copy of Before The Storm and fell in love with trance ever since. Great to see Villi talk about the making of the track and how it got so big. Kiitos!
Very interesting take on this classic. I recall hearing Darude Sandstorm in Washington DC at a club called Platinum around 2001 and can remember everyone going absolutely bonkers in excitement when the song dropped. Brings back great memories :D
I remember moving from the UK in 2003 (where dance music had been commercial and publically acceptable for more than a decade) to the USA (where it was still looked down upon and basically unheard of in the mid-west, they still called everything 'techno' and avoided it like the plague)...but during 2006 I remember going to a baseball game and suddenly it was 'okay' to play snippits of both Zombie Nation and Sandstorm...and the crowd would be sat clapping and do doo dooing to it, like it was their only exposure to dance music. Then you'd walk back out of the stadium and people would be in their cars listening to country, rap and rock again. I just found it really bizzare.
It really is truly bizarre how some parties (political and religious) like to fight music of a certain types for decades. There's always some form of music to demonize for some absurd reason. Metal still takes the cake for being "bad" for the dumbest reasons and yet, the communities around it are the chillest mf around. Never any issues at metal festivals or gigs. It's always the local bar/festival with shitty pop playing and people drunk out of their mind that has the issues with violence or all sorts etc.
This was my Sunday night Autobahn track when I'd race with my car at 240km/h from my home back to where I was stationed... one play through of the 7:30 min track and whooosh.. 30km passed on the journey.
Was this the last era of music where people consistently played and enjoyed various genres? I vividly remember still listening to the radio a lot during these times.
