I graduated high school in the late 1980’s and college in the 1990’s and Depeche Mode was such a perfect band for that time, innovative, stylish, cool, enigmatic, and way ahead of its time. There really aren’t any bands nowadays that have all of those qualities that Depeche Mode did.
I've been a massive DM fan since the early 80's. I had all the albums up to Violator on cassette tape. Then on CD in the 90's and beyond. The great Alan Wilder really doesn't get the credit he deserves. RIP Fletch. Thank you.
Just because his album was not a commercial success does not mean he is not the driver of the DM's success. He is a classically trained music genius. Don't confuse correlations with causation. Alan was their platform. Without him, there is no DM success. That's his sound. The actual weakest link was Fletcher.
MUSIC FOR THE MASSES 1988, PASADENA. None of us expected this show or this album to be iconic. I just remember the local radio station telling us over and over, their ending the tour in Pasadena. I wanted to go see the cute boy with the dark hair and that deep manly voice.. And there i was, in the rain, forever mesmerized by the white Levi's and the flowy white shirt sticking to this boys body as he belted out song after song... I'm 15 all over again when i hear this album! Forever a devotee ⛓️🖤⛓️
I was/am blessed in that my very first concert was Depeche Mode 101. Before they came on, Wired, Thomas Dolby, and OMD performed first, which were also brilliant. It was also the first time I smelled marijuana. I thought a skunk had snuck in to the Rose Bowl (it's in a canyon, so it's not too uncommon to see deer and other animals around there sometimes). That concert is a cherished memory I will always hold dear to my heart.
I was a DJ at an under 21 night club in Little Rock Arkansas called The King Fish in 1988. It closed and me and a couple of friends open another under 21 club called Nemesis. We had way too much fun. Depeche Mode was played consistently.
@ many are saying that both Depeche Mode and the cure are the best ever!! 42 years later since my music researching began, I still come back to these 2 bands, amongst very few others! My Spotify has almost 2k liked songs and over 60 hrs on my absolute favorites playlist…. I could go on, but it’s all about the music

I believe the real depeche MODE existed from " A Broken Frame; 1982" until "ULTRA; 1997" despite Alan Wilder have not participated in that one last album
Love Depeche from the very beginning, still adore and listen to constantly ‘see You’. From there they just got better and better and better and better …..Dave and co are my ‘personal Jesus’ ❤
People can only wish that the rest of the group made more of an effort with Alan, as their work has evidently suffered since. But, such is life, Alan had his family and gave us multiple Recoil albums.
To Have and To Hold is my favorite of the album, and perhaps my favorite song of the band. It's so underrated it's not even mentioned in this video lol
The version y’all love is actually Alan Wilder inspired. Martin’s demo was bright and vastly different. Alan gave it atmosphere, darkness and that lovely Russian sample.
Music for the masses is one of the best of DM albums, besides Black celebratiion and Violator. The concert at the Rose Bowl was in my opinion the best concert DM ever had. It was a powerfull, magical, mystical experience. Love DM. ❤❤😊
100% Agree. I thought there was hope when Ultra came out (loved that album) but the other albums after Alan just aren't the same. I appreciate the new stuff, but the older stuff resonates
Best. Band. Ever. I recently got back into synths and am recreating some of their songs. They're a lot more complex than most people realize. And they don't sound dated 30 years later.
As I grew through my twenties, DM was one of the hit bands of my time. I worked in clubs through the 90's as a light man, and Sunday's were always devoted to Trash Disco and Old 80's music. DM was one of the mainstays of our musical sets. Here in Montreal, we had a three level club, with Trash Disco and 80's sets in the basement of an old building, and I fondly remember dancing to DM on many a night. I still listen to them now in my late 50's !!
Not my 1st, but 1st DM..... It still has a special place and its like a instant trip to teenage years everytime I hear it. Some songs take me back to specific times, its crazy.
It's like what David Bowie said regarding art. Artists generally only create masterful works when they do it for themselves, not audiences. The audience will come later.
It was a good summary to look through these songs.. I remember listening to this album about 35 years ago,it was really different than anything before. Some huge songs. Also the narration gives a very good vibe to the video, can we know who made it (I mean the voice-over)
So do I. And I also miss Peter Hook not being in New Order. Both bands just haven't been the same without them. It would be interesting if they teamed up.
I have a special place in my heart for MftM specifically because of the last 30 seconds of Never Let Me Down Again. I still get chills to this day from the chord progression with their instruments and Dave repeating the title with the background vocals. Huge fan of DM since I heard Love In Itself from the Construction Time Again album in '83. Another song that gives me chills with that cold, eerie keyboard wail of theirs. I didn't know how to describe the exact sound but if you know that song you know exactly what I'm talking about. It sounds like electronic howling wind.
This is my second favorite band of all time and I have every album they've recorded (except for their last one "Memento Mori"). I've attended 6 of their concerts in different cities. Their Violator album is outstanding, but I was already in love with Music for the Masses beforehand. I wish that I had seen the Music For The Masses concert, especially their famous last concert at the Rose Bowl. I am grateful for the video compilation of that tour which gave such a intimate look at the band and their unique experience of that tour. I also enjoyed their movie "Spirts in the Forest" at the theatre. I could hardly remain in my seat, just like what happens to me at their live concerts. The sound inside the theatre was pure musical joy and I couldn't help but sing along to all their songs (which I know by heart). Besides their music, Depeche Mode has created a unique global community of people from every corner of the world that love the band, and by extension, all the fans love each too. I have enjoyed concerts with total strangers sitting next to me that were just as passionate to hear them perform. We forget whatever social norms are required to feel comfortable with a new acquaintance and just have a blast together, sing together and dance together. We can forge loving experiences at concerts due to our shared love of the music. I have missed Alan Wilder as a member for a long while, but Fletch's passing was a blow to my heart. I will always miss him standing behind his keyboard and lifting his arm from time to time to show that he loved playing their own songs.
101 was a fabulous project and accompanying video, Music for the Masses was my first real DM love affair in more ways than one it was all I was listening to at a time I met a girl who is now my wife thirty seven years later.
A major miss in this documentary: Although credited as producer, David Bascombe was relegated to an engineering role when it was discovered that the project was bigger than he had thought. So, who actually produced MFTM? Alan Wilder.
Funny story: when I got a hearing test that confirmed I was losing my hearing, I got in the car, feeling a little upset, and then THE FIRST SONG that played on the radio was “Enjoy the Silence” I was laughing so hard at the irony that it actually made me feel better. I took a photo of the radio showing the song title just so I could prove it to my wife. I’m pretty much deaf in my right ear now but I’m doing fine. I often think about that day and it still makes me laugh.
Music for the Masses is very special to me. I listened to this album over and over again (especially Little 15) because I was so depressed in the early 90's. This album saved my sanity. I almost was able to go to the Rose Bowl concert but couldn't because my supposed friend decided to take her new boyfriend at the last minute 😫
Many hours were spent meditating and ruminating on these lyrics and tempos. Then a discovery was made: Michael Card demonstrated deep understanding of the human spirit during this time, meditating on suffering and the eternal…with hope.

I'm the same age, and I agree. Not as big a fan of what they've done since that time, but back then, they were absolute kings.
....and then along came VIOLATOR... the greatest album of all time.
Violator was also great, but not the greatest ;)
I believe you meant 'Disintegration' by The Cure. 😜
Violator is my fave DM album ever, don't know if it's the greatest album of all time but..
and then after that came Songs of Faith and Devotion. 🙏
Speak and Spell for me... and also for best album cover of DM
I've been a massive DM fan since the early 80's. I had all the albums up to Violator on cassette tape. Then on CD in the 90's and beyond. The great Alan Wilder really doesn't get the credit he deserves. RIP Fletch. Thank you.
We all do in fact, I mean we all were such fans, cc, cd, bootlegs etc
But after Alan's dearture - there were nothing to listen to, so the story ended
Black Celebration was the turning point for the band.
Alan Wilder was the sound creator of Depeche Mode.
A Music Genius.
He is so great, that when he left the band he bombed spectacularly. And BTW Martin and David still deliver greats albuns and shows, so there you are.
Just because his album was not a commercial success does not mean he is not the driver of the DM's success. He is a classically trained music genius. Don't confuse correlations with causation. Alan was their platform. Without him, there is no DM success. That's his sound. The actual weakest link was Fletcher.
The most underrated human being.
I agree with you. DM is not the same without Alan Wilder
He was to DM what Mick Harvey was to the Bad Seeds.

Where is sacred and my favourite song "nothing "?
Legendary Depeche Mode
Officially Bascom is the Producer
Unofficially Alan Wilder was the Producer according to Bascom
