haha i have base tunes ready for the p01 that is working out great, started driving around on the p59 today and tuning up to 14psi going to add 02 sensors, and i did an exhaust also, most of an exhaust anyway
@@SloppyMechanics hey man love ur content. I have a special request. So I'm doing a Gen 3swap to my 06 colorado and I was at the junkyard today and found XLR ecu from a caddilac nordstar I was wondering if this ecu is compatible with e40 program or vice versa
Yup agree DBW P59 build, I love that cruise control when I'm going for ice cream.....or beer or tacos or for any extended driving, to get tacos or beer
it's important to note that the IAC chip can be soldered in, and the rest of the controls can be activated via the system options by adding a 0 to the respective DBW column. PS: 2 vids in one go! woot.
understanding what the nouns and verbs are of a given subject really helps to understand what is going on. thank you for explaining some of those nouns, it makes better sense now. Keep it up. thanks
Coming from somebody who has hptuners experience but has never done a segment swap, this was excellent. EXTREMELY helpful. Speaking for myself and many others, thank you very much. I'm about to do the custom 3 bar RTT OS on a P01 swapped 98 camaro with a 5.3/7875 combo on E85. This was helpful even for that. I have the John Potucek file saved that I will begin tuning with. Again, thank you very much for all this...it is greatly appreciated.
I've found zero consistency in the color of that gasket and what's in the PCM. Something worth noting for anyone looking to retain AC in their swap - A PCM that doesn't have the IAC drivers will not take a +12V AC request on C2 pin 17 regardless what you select in HP Tuners for AC request type.
Long story short, I taught myself on gen4 e38 first, and now I have been helping a friend do more gen3 NA tunes. I went back to this and watched it a few times. It's been a great reference! Thank you.
Holy crap! Feel like I just won the lottery! First P59 pulled from the local yard has IAC control on it. Pulled from Suburban with DBW.?? Orange seal on mine as well. Thanks Matt
I opened the ecu I have after watching this, out of a express van which had drive by cable with green and blue plugs. And it had a Gray seal. thought I would share
I fell asleep with youtube playing on my tv, when I woke up this video was playing. The info is super helpful. I'm going junkyard shopping soon and this is exactly what I needed to know before I go. Thanks for sharing your experience! I know which pcm to look for when picking up a backup.
Thanks very much for sharing, I've been tuning Subaru's for a few years using open-source ecu software, so I followed along when you discussed the differences in resolution: there are 16bit and 32bit Subaru ecus that are the same way. I'm still in the planning stages for my swap (want to set my goals first), and all of your videos have been extremely helpful!
Thanks for all the food for thought in the video: I think the next step is reverse engineering the P59 and enable all options at once, and possibly programmed boost control
To add a tiny bit more info, the corvette P01 computers do use Drive by Wire. I believe they used those all the way up to 2003 and 2004 switched to a P59. Just another piece of info to add to this video that may help someone if they have one of those PCM's.. I may have more to add if I feel it's worth mentioning lol.
brilliant expo .... for the resolution question , if it helps , first car i mapped was my tvr 215 v8 in 1991 ,dfi injection from summit for a sbc . i had it modded by john meaney/accel to use a 3bar sensor ,turned out to have 4 rows to atmos ,then each bar was another 4 rows ,so 4bar total ! mapped it with the first 6 rows to 12 psi boost , went out and ran a best poss 12.32 1/4 on treads .drove very well ...so the moral is ,like you said matt ,you don't need lots of rows .
Your best shot at making the segment swap feature to work is that both vehicles must be from the same year. Like both silverado's, if one was a 1500 and the other 2500 you want them both to be from the same years. Sometimes you can get pretty lucky and find vehicles that are from the same year but a different model. Like a silverado/sierra and avalanche or even sometimes a silverado/sierra and a S10/Blazer if you need a manual segment. If you dig in the tune repository you can normally find what you want, sometimes it's best to ask on the forum for stock files and even email support as they can have files that you could use if it's an odd ball combo.
GTPSilvermist if HPtuners is like Efilive, the base OS has to be the same for any segments to be swapped, like you said different models or series of vehicles can swap segments no problem
Happel your a Genius!!!! Thanks for the passing on of your knowledge. I'm sure I'll end up watching 👀 this a Thousand times and still be confused but maybe one day I'll get there
Awesome. I havent even got my tuning software and Im with it, Thankyou i was just bitching about all week how nobody was breaking it down for what Im going to do.Thankyou and IM crazy excited.
Thank you for all you do and share with us Matt. I just opened a p59 with blue and green connector from a 2004 DBW 5.3 1500 Silverado orange gasket but no chip. I want to do DBC and was hoping to be lucky enough that my donor would be the one I want.
P01 and P59 for segment swapping I'd use LSDroid or PCMHammer with OBDXPRO scantool since they don't cost credits. Then once all the segments are right, if you want more features from HPTuners I would license from there.
I just spent the last week reading up on all the p59 ecm differences. Went to my local pick and pull. Pulled the wrong p59. Then got the one I want. P59 dbc for my 2000 4.8. This video is awsome. Thank you. Btw still taking notes. And about to build. Btw can't wait for the ported heads. I have 243 I want to through on
Great video! BTW, that MonkeyFab cover plate on the hood looks like an old taxicab medallion when they used to rivet them to the hoods of cabs in the big cities.
Thanks a lot for the video Matt. I had issues swapping my 06 Silverado from 60e to 80e a while back and this video would have helped a lot. Segment swapping is confusing but can be done!
Matt, I have a 99 p01 4896 with enhanced sd, os ends in 008. I tried to do a 4l80 segment swap with OS that matched the original OS, I’m getting 1-3 gear but no 4th, I can command it to 4th gear with the scanner but it does not shift into 4th on its on, I have verified shift mph in tune and it is correct, 55mph at 18% throttle
As someone that has dealt with different vendors on PCB housing seals this was most likely a alternate material on the specification so there could be a mix of gray and red out there with no method to the madness.
I feel dumb and Didn’t know this video existed when I commented in the public sloppy fb when you did the 2017 in review post asking for what we all wanted for information you would review.... basically I need HP tuners to read my P01 OS and segments for what’s factory enabled to figure out what it’s capable of and what the upgrade OS HP tuners will and won’t actually give me for 2/3 bar and real-time or not
I'm sure the p59 that does both is a transition part. You should see if there are modern replacement options for that missing component and what passive components (resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc.) might be needed to upgrade the DBW only models.
I was in a conundrum becasue my 6.0 lq4 was drive by wire, but the 8 pin tb, which doesn't work with the popular later 6 pin tb, so I was going to go dbc, but had a blue green pcm. After watching this video, I opened up my PCm, and voila...IAC chip and orange seal. :) I mean, it's not hard to buy a compatible pcm, but heck, nice to be able to use something that I already have. Thank you !
This took me like 2 hours to get through cuz I couldn’t stop fucking with my tune. New to HPTuners in a 4th gen with p01 that was an auto swapped to T56 with all auto trans OS. I was wondering about the changing from auto to manual not doing shit, cuz it didn’t. However from watching this I found a stock T56 4th gen tune that didn’t grey out and segment swapped everything, basically giving the car a manual trans p01. Changed the speedo calibration from my other tune since the auto was a 3.23 rear gear and wasn’t swapped with trans. I just learned SO much thank you so much for this kind of content. Best on RUclips LS/HPTuners stuff. Can’t wait to load this tune on the car tomorrow and test it out.
Thank you very much for this video. Helped me a lot. A lot to take in but very helpful. Solved a bunch of issues for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Where was this vid 2-3 years ago!? lol could of used it back when I was trying to figure all this stock ecu flex, 2bar, 3bar nonsense out. Very informative and we'll laid out. Made sense to me even though I mainly use efilive. Thanks!
I have both p01 and p59 dbc versions in a24x gen 1 sbc . My p59 dbc was the first ecu I stumbled upon in my scrap yard . I didnt know they where rare Great ecu
Thank you Matt, I appreciate the information. I'm very new to this and I'm looking to install an LS in the next couple of months eventually moving forward again to a turbo set up.
If i have a PO1 currently running, will i be able to swap the P59 w/IAC on to the same wire harness with just the green connector change or will i be have to make pin changes.?
0411 can do DBW too not just DBC. The 8.1 wasn't offered in DBC from the factory. I bought an 8.1 that came with the pcm from an 01 truck has the 0411 is a DBW setup.
Hi Matt, thanks for other great video! Just for your info: I have a corvette C5 2001 with DBW and there is a P01 ECM. And I have a P01 from 2001 suburban which was DBC truck but in the tune there is also a tab for electronic throttle adjustments so I think P01 can do DBW and DBC also
Really helpful stuff Matt, as usual! I have one question though, albeit irrelevant to any of this, where did you get the Australian flag blow up finger that's hanging out of the passenger window in your screen saver burnout shot??
I just want to say thanks. I've been using hp tuners for years and never realized the drop down menu's didn't work..........wtf. I haven't noticed any damn differences though. 60e to manual, 80e to manual. Good thing I was going to manual with them haha.
as we have gone over it many times, its all up to you and what you want to do, the gold box itself cannot run a trans, you need an additional box, it does work, it works great, i have done it many times, this truck used to have it, as far as most cost effective, this can do all of that for half the cost... something to consider, of course if you want anti lag, boost cut, and dry nitrous kits to work, then yes it cant do that and you should consider stand alone, but for a parts hauler, burnout machine, weekend racer, ice cream runner, this covers all the bases and more, understand the reasoning
After your comment of buying licenses and then finding out they don't work; gold box sounded like a better option. Thank you for the insight on not able to do antilag with a stock computer. These videos have so much content and you do a great job -keep it up!
Great information as always. I was trying to find a unicorn P59 PCM that had 3 Bar and RTT but apparently that doesn't exist. Good to know though. I have a running working 5.3 7875 FBW with 80E segment swap tune file if you want it. I can send it to the sloppy email if you want.
It would be sweet if HPT could delete the auto trans stuff in the P01 flex tune file and maybe make it be able to do 3 bar and RTT. Then at least manual trans cars could use it, or those who were willing to buy a trans controller
Yessir, just needs a C5 TAC and Pedal. I didn't get to watch it through all the way but so far you are pretty accurate. The P59 is much nicer for Flex just due to it having more resolution for flex functions. Also we can use the EFILive COS with the P59 and keep full resolution on the VE tables!
The orange doesn't seem to match, opened up a few I had laying around (I'm late but following the recipe), but ya helped me pick one out of the pile without using a dice
Your a hero. I'm swapping a Ls (6.0) into a 54 chevy truck. I had to track down a harness and ecu and this helped me a lot. Because I plan on going turbo, drive by cable, 3 bar and e85. So what im understanding is, if I have a ecu green/blue harness connections out of a 03 express van, it should have the p59 and be able to do everything I want?
Hey mate, i have a green, blue pcm from a Holden Statesman WL and it has the IAC on it. Im absolutely spewing as i just got a blue red pcm and rewired the thing to run a cable throttle. I'll be running this one now. Thanks heaps. Checkout my ls swap videos.
One question, does either of these work with iTunes? Ha-ha, no I didn't get much of this, I guess I need to get my hands on the components, then I can understand it better, very informative, I want to rewatch, on a better screen, do you have a idea of what I should look for in a 4.8 wit cable, that I can turbo, what year would be a good engine? Flex would be a plus!
The ONLY thing that you need to do a segment swap is a matching OS ID. No license, no matching year, none of that. Several of the OSs were used for multiple years. I do wish the HPTuners repository listed tunes by OS ID, would make this way way easier to find
Do the hardware number and serv number stickers have any clues to what is what or is a P01 a P01 and those are like serial numbers? For instance what is the difference between your P01 and a P01 that has 0411 on it?
Computers used were 09354896 from 99-00 (this the one in the video matt is using), and 12200411 from 01-02. Both of these had red/blue computer connectors - from www.lt1swap.com
after looking at your video I open up the back of my computer it does have a Gray seal and it also has the chip it is a green and blue connector so basically this means I can run drive by wire or drive-by cable just wanted to make sure
HP Tuners is set up to slow lower numbers in green and higher numbers in orange/red. So yellow is just a blend between the two. As airflow and fueling need increase the numbers turn red as that is a larger numbers than below it. You need far less fuel at lower rpm and kpa readings so the tables is going to be a mix of green/yellow. Then it's just orange/red where the airflow/fueling is the most in the VE.
fuel adjustment just means how much fuel is going in when and where, the colors are a temperature chart making it easier to spot high and low and or problem areas
Wow is just watched the video. I am so confused! I have a P01 out of a 2002 dbc I want to switch to Flex Fuel. Do I have to by credits to get the flex fuel OS? Or is there a way to do a segment swap? Thanks! Great video!
Thank you for all the great info. I will be rewatching this video many times to try and absorb all the info you gave. My question is, what is easier to program and change stuff on for a non computer skilled person, would I be better off using a gold box, mega squirt, or trying to make a factory computer work ? Or does it all come down to what I personally want it to be able to do?
its preference then what you want to do then if you or someone else can tune it's preference and ability on top of that, if you have no idea what to do or how to do it you need to find someone reputable who can take over that department, get you moving then tuned
lot to take in, but think im getting some of it. you did clear up the 2/3bar, rtt/nonrtt thing as much as it can be, seeing the files opened helps piece that together. maybe this is in the vimeo vids. (ill buy and watch those when im a little closer to tuning/running) but curious as to the licensing. at first when researching it sounded like you just piss away credits. then i see hpt allowed OS changes with no credits. people where saying to do the compare file like in your vid to change the segments, and you would be ok. or even compare a whole tune to write onto my stock ecu. guessing that i would connect the hpt then straight up load and license your tune before i even bothered to license my stock ecu setup?
Right, don't license anything until you are 100% sure on what you want to do. No matter what you have to license your computer. You can't license someone else's file like say matt tunes and then try and write it to your computer as it wouldn't do anything because your computer isn't unlocked. The other option you have is that you can license your stock computer, then upgrade to a 2 or 3 bar tune. Then copy over information from the other tune to get you a starting point. Just be careful what you copy over to lower the risk of you getting something wrong and causing you headaches.
Another great video Matt. As far as the P59s with IAC, I dont know for sure but I would be willing to bet that they would be the pcms out of the 03-06 express vans and Savanas. These vehicles were still DBC after all the trucks switched over to DBW in 03 so they would have had to had the IAC chips. My question is, as we were discussing in another video, can the a segment swap be used on the P59 to somehow keep your resolution when going to a 2 or 3 bar Custom OS. I know you said you dont need much resolution and going to 2 bar isnt that bad but going to 3 bar on a p59 takes you down to only having a few rows left on the VE table for no-boost areas. That has to make for some sloppy(pun intended) low throttle tuning.
different OS cant segment it in, not that i have seen anyway, if your fuel table ends up being rocky enable 02s and install them itll clean it up for you when you drive
I commented before I got to the part of the video where you addressed this. My bad. As far as the van pcs, let me know if you can confirm this as some point. You've got alot more hardware passing through your hands than i do and Im interested in knowing for sure myself. If it proves true Ill be on the hunt for van pcms. Im sure theyll end up overtaken by the Sloppy tax though. lol
The seal color could just be depending on factory they were made in and or the Orange is older because presumably the p59 with iac was just at the years where it changes over but if my question is not already lost does that mean when i put a 4l80e in my 1/2 ton silverado do i need to swap those segments i mean i went and used my credits for the 99 to 06 gen 3 v8 Silverados so should not be a problem to grab the segments and i know i have to swap some pins and all also
Yeah, if you installed a 4L80e on your truck that had a 4L60e you will want to perform the segment swap on the transmission side. Past that it should be gravy for making the rest work.
I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I did just open my p59 and it had no drivers and an orange seal
Thanks for this! It's like you are just ahead of our project and make videos on exactly what we need to know. Keep it up!
haha i have base tunes ready for the p01 that is working out great, started driving around on the p59 today and tuning up to 14psi going to add 02 sensors, and i did an exhaust also, most of an exhaust anyway

For what it's worth I pulled a p59 computer from a 2005 4.3 v6 Silverado base model work truck gray gasket.

P01 can do drive by wire. I did a p01 (411) swap on a 97 corvette. Used a 2000 corvette OS and it works. I like cable better though
Subscribed and liked. Thanks very much. You have been a huge help.
good vid learned a lot about what it takes to make an ls go boost.
Where was this vid 2-3 years ago!? lol could of used it back when I was trying to figure all this stock ecu flex, 2bar, 3bar nonsense out. Very informative and we'll laid out. Made sense to me even though I mainly use efilive. Thanks!
this shit unfortunately does not exist so i am trying my best to get it out there lol
You are absolutely right, we all appreciate your contributions!
I Have a P01 out of an 2002 avalanche and it is drive by wire. I heard it was the earliest DBW for the truck platform
Found that p59 does have grey gasket and iac, on it, service no. 12589462,hdw,12589161,..dbc
opened up my p59 with green/blue connectors out of a box truck has Orange seal and idle air control driver
If i have a PO1 currently running, will i be able to swap the P59 w/IAC on to the same wire harness with just the green connector change or will i be have to make pin changes.?
Super helpful video. I tried to change my trans from an 80e to manual and it wouldn't rev past 2k after. Makes sense why now. Thanks Matt!
And I have a P01 from 2001 suburban which was DBC truck but in the tune there is also a tab for electronic throttle adjustments so I think P01 can do DBW and DBC also
it can, i have done a p01 in a corvette, henrys turbo l33 if you search my videos, i believe the DBW system is separate from the ECU so it can
my body is ready...
take your pills and get out your notepad
Really helpful stuff Matt, as usual! I have one question though, albeit irrelevant to any of this, where did you get the Australian flag blow up finger that's hanging out of the passenger window in your screen saver burnout shot??
my friend from australia actually sent it to me
I just want to say thanks. I've been using hp tuners for years and never realized the drop down menu's didn't work..........wtf. I haven't noticed any damn differences though. 60e to manual, 80e to manual. Good thing I was going to manual with them haha.
My p59 has an orange seal and no IAC driver. That would’ve been a great indicator but looks like it’s just a coincidence
3bar, RTT and Flex. I might as well upgrade to a MS Gold Box and be done.
as we have gone over it many times, its all up to you and what you want to do, the gold box itself cannot run a trans, you need an additional box, it does work, it works great, i have done it many times, this truck used to have it, as far as most cost effective, this can do all of that for half the cost... something to consider, of course if you want anti lag, boost cut, and dry nitrous kits to work, then yes it cant do that and you should consider stand alone, but for a parts hauler, burnout machine, weekend racer, ice cream runner, this covers all the bases and more, understand the reasoning
After your comment of buying licenses and then finding out they don't work; gold box sounded like a better option. Thank you for the insight on not able to do antilag with a stock computer. These videos have so much content and you do a great job -keep it up!
You could do the same thing with the holley ECU you ran for a while, right?
sure, but this is a budget build, so one learns the cheaper methods and get it done. With more money in the budget, then do the 6.0 build
I scored a p59 from a 02 suburban with flex fuel and dbc,so I think I got a rare one lol and I paid 22 bucks for it
FWIW - I got my P59 from a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 V6
It would be sweet if HPT could delete the auto trans stuff in the P01 flex tune file and maybe make it be able to do 3 bar and RTT. Then at least manual trans cars could use it, or those who were willing to buy a trans controller
FYI P01 will do both DBW and DBC. C5 has same PCM as an Fbody, programming is the only difference.
really? so i can install a p01 with like a z06 flash in it and plug it into a dbw... does it need a corvette specific throttle body then?
am i accurate on the rest of it? i know you are a full time hp tuners guru
Yessir, just needs a C5 TAC and Pedal. I didn't get to watch it through all the way but so far you are pretty accurate. The P59 is much nicer for Flex just due to it having more resolution for flex functions. Also we can use the EFILive COS with the P59 and keep full resolution on the VE tables!
v6 pcm's have iac and so far every 8.1 pcm has had iac drivers even though they are DBW
The orange doesn't seem to match, opened up a few I had laying around (I'm late but following the recipe), but ya helped me pick one out of the pile without using a dice
Great video!! Just what I wanted to know. Thanks Matt
C5 corvette used P01 and drive by wire. 04 GTO had P59 and drive by cable..
Very Good video matt! Been looking forward to this video. Thank you
Wait so how can I tell which mine is?
Mines from a flex fuel 2007 Chevy Tahoe.
Pretty sure it’s green/red
Awesome vid! Shoulda done a cam only tune for the slow progress guys like me
Isn't Jamie's work truck drive by wire? awesome video! love all the details.
it is, but totally different pcm, e38 gen4
Very very good job. Thanks
+1 vote for a DBW build, one day
maybe one day
The ONLY thing that you need to do a segment swap is a matching OS ID. No license, no matching year, none of that. Several of the OSs were used for multiple years. I do wish the HPTuners repository listed tunes by OS ID, would make this way way easier to find
thanks, for clearing that up
yes it would be nice if you could search or sort by OS ID, you can i have done it, but not everyone throws the OSID into the searchable desc
that sounds like a good project to do, since there are a finite number of OSes on these old ECUs
Totally informative. Thanks for doing the video. It saved me a ton of time scouring the internet and having to sort through the bullshitters.
Do the hardware number and serv number stickers have any clues to what is what or is a P01 a P01 and those are like serial numbers? For instance what is the difference between your P01 and a P01 that has 0411 on it?
Jess Neal all pcm's with blue/red connectors should be p01 and all pcm's with blue/green connectors should be p59, more details at lt1swap.com
Computers used were 09354896 from 99-00 (this the one in the video matt is using), and 12200411 from 01-02. Both of these had red/blue computer connectors - from www.lt1swap.com
I learned a shit ton, thank you so much .
I just took a couple Adderall‘s and I’m ready to sit down and watch this video...
after looking at your video I open up the back of my computer it does have a Gray seal and it also has the chip it is a green and blue connector so basically this means I can run drive by wire or drive-by cable just wanted to make sure
Matt, when you switched the p01 to p59 in the colorado did you have to re-pin anything or did you just change the red main harness connector?
good knowledgebomb specially on the white board
please elaborate on fuel table ADJUSTMENT! All the green and yellow is frightening.
(ill buy and watch those when im a little closer to tuning/running) but curious as to the licensing. at first when researching it sounded like you just piss away credits. then i see hpt allowed OS changes with no credits. people where saying to do the compare file like in your vid to change the segments, and you would be ok. or even compare a whole tune to write onto my stock ecu. guessing that i would connect the hpt then straight up load and license your tune before i even bothered to license my stock ecu setup?
i would say do not license anything till you are sure you are getting what you need lol, but yes it is easy to throw away credits in the beginning
Im sure theyll end up overtaken by the Sloppy tax though. lol
FYI, I just confirmed.....the 03-up express van PCMs are P59s and have the IAC. Just to let you know what to look for if you want another one. ;)
The hand is mesmerizing
Excellent video. To use your file does the OS have to match? To install your file do I have to segment swap each part or just flash it?
