Just a heads up for everybody, a lot of LS9 head gaskets over the last year got made with “front” printed on the wrong end. Pretty much all the major brands of LS9 gaskets come from the same company that makes the GM gaskets, so be sure the end with the holes for coolant to pass through get installed towards the rear of the engine.
Dude, I owe you a drink. I had never heard of this before. I put my heads on and tightened the bolts down, and played this video while doing the final torque. I saw your comment and scratched my head. I bought 3 sets of gaskets years ago and checked the other gaskets. Sure enough, they were printed wrong! I pulled the heads back off, and you saved me. Thank you for your comment.
Old school RUclips style videos make me happy. The ol sloppy, slapping together an LS jammin to music without a million adds or bullshit sales pitch. Sign me up. 🤙
Ps. Currently building my third home spun turbo project ( second turbo LSx Foxbody). In between was a turbo big block Chevy Factory Five pickup. None of them would have happened had I not found your RUclips channel and learned about 6 years university worth of knowledge. Thank you Matt!!! 🍻
Adept Ape did a torque test with various extensions and as long as it is not an offset type wrench - the torque was very very close to no extensions used.
I'm switching mine to ls9s now. Pushing water anything past 15psi on my sbe 5.3. I reused the head bolts Soo many times a buddy of mine gifted me a set of arp bolts. But even they couldn't save the coolant pressure lol 20psi 17° on e85 fairly conservative still pushed water fingers crossed the 7 layer ls9s do the trick and nothing is warped lol.
Not yet gotta get it off the stand to get back cover off, figure I’ll do that, show that, flex plate etc then I just brought fairmont in to get gut like a fish
Beginning was spot on. 😂. Just FYI, I bought one of those Quinn digital torque wrenches from Harbor Freight a couple years ago to do the TTY bullshit and it works great. I think it was around $125 with a coupon I had. I’ve put two engines together and done a couple head replacements with it and it’s been flawless. So are those the BTR LS9 style small bore gaskets? Cause I’ve got a set of them sitting here for when I put this LC9 back together. Guess I’ll get to see you test them out first. Lol.
Really liking the old time ‘back to slop’ content! A quick question…do you have an approximate torque spec you use for reused bolts? Look like you’re putting between 65 and 75 lb/ft on them…so I’m curious. Have been watching your videos since 2008. Cheers
So used to being crammed into a corner that you automatically cram yourself into a corner? I fear investing in a 2500sqft garage simply because I'll still be working in a 4x10 space outside the front door 😆
I have reused my head bolts at least 5 times, thank you Matt if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have a turbo LS on a Terminator
You definitely missed torquing one of the head bolts on cylinder 1, but I'm assuming you only did that to trigger us 😊
Thanks for the videos man!!! Love the old sloppy style.
I missed these days, it’s like we stepping back in time. You dirty devil.
Classic Matt is back! I love these style videos! I’ll always watch no matter what though 👍
The BTR gaskets were in a bin waiting to come down... According to PA mythology 😂
Oh you are to zesty with these old school matt videos. Tty boots used head gaskets and rambletron=gold
driver's side head, 1st headbolt under cover... :) he's just chillin', no stress....
Yep I watched it twice and he did miss the first headbolt under the valve cover on the driver's side.

Hate to be that guy that made the woopsie.

ah the day the music died. dave mathews band also is kermit
RIPD, I freakin love that movie. Feelin frosty time to get your snowman on icey hot.
You forgot to torque the head bolt closest to the waterpump outlet. Cylinder 1 top left bolt.
sssshhh

I usually use one washer with each old bolt. Works lovely.
Rambletron on spot. Numerous chuckles

steady flow of vids
It's bugging me real back that you missed the top front short bolt in cylinder one. But I see what you did there. Well played......
All-motor fairmont with a properly sloppy L33 and a 4L60e?!?! This is the exact sort of shenanigans I subscribed for way back when. Lol

Purgatory is a waiting room above the basement and below the roof😂. Matt did you change the barbell?

Now if the internet can convince Trent Reznor to cover rainbow connection the circle will be complete…

I think the term is "semi sloppy". Great job dad!
Right on
Sloppy 2.188😂
how much are you torquing the head bolts to?
Kids and their pills!!!! Matts American idol audition coming soon
Almost immediately, I got the answer I was looking for. 1999 6.0 RockAuto gaskets it is haha
Old sloppy back!
Ole school sloppy build ...just the way i like it.
Really liking the old time ‘back to slop’ content!

51 on rod bolts
65 on head bolts
Meanwhile people buying studs when the bolt is not usually the problem.
So used to being crammed into a corner that you automatically cram yourself into a corner?

I fit two cars in my shed after adding 50% more area to it. Yep.
Karate kid torque technique
Torque test channel proved the pqy studs were marginally stronger though?
Yeah you would know better than me, I just think it’s funny a one use bolt scores so we’ll on repeat uses
If using gen4 rods and pistons with a gen3 should it be balanced?
Yes
Do you still work EMS while doing all these RUclips videos? Or we full time sloppy now?😊
*Good Stuff!*
Brapp
Typical Matco torque wrench. Have to take the batteries out or it will be dead the next time you go to use it.
That was Nicholas cage
63 fb?
Yeah 60-65
damn Matt i watched your old vids and torque mine down to 70 shit still worked tho lol
Probably not first
Sloppy 3.1415926
Ya can't call it Sloppy pie😂 that's definitely Cheryl's box the way Moog talks about it
I have a sloppy pie I'm quite fond of
