  • A St. Charles County man bought a car off Craigslist and later found out the odometer had been rolled back by 100,000 miles. How can you determine if the mileage on a car you're buying is correct?

The feds really need to step up their game on odometer scammers. Those who fall victim to these scams should still be allowed to register the vehicle. Its not their fault the odometer was messed with. Just put on the title that the true milage is unknown due to tampering.

The other thing you can do is divide the amount of miles in the odometer reading in the dash and you can find how many miles that car was driving per year. If it's less than 10.000 per year, most probably the miles have been altered.

It's a federal offense that is a felony to alter the odometers on cars, the fine is $10,000 Dollars and 10 years in prison. That's why it is important to know who is selling the car to you. Ask for the driver license and take the name and the number and the address on that driver license; if he can't provide you with that then don't buy the car. If you don't care losing your money then it's your decision.

These cars have so many computer chips in them. I dont understand why there is not a chip that retains the otiginal mileage even if the odometer is rolled back. It would be easy as all a car dealer needs to do is access the cars computer, and get the actual mileage from that and see if it aligns with what the odometer on the dash panel reads. I mean come on computers are supposed to be smart. Just because you delete or change something does not mean its gone. Computers can be back checked. Now older cars with a mechanical odometer, thats different, but stil if it had a computer, then the mileage should be retained on that. Auto manufactures time to step up your game against odometer tampering.

I asked why their picture says almost 12,000 miles. He said you’re right it’s almost 12,000 but that cars been sold. I said you just asked me to come see the car one minute ago and he was like yeah somebody put a deposit down the car is gonna be sold. It looks really bad. Then they stopped responding to me completely. First dealership that’s ever stopped responding to me about buying a car. Before that they also tried to sell me a 2022 and didn’t tell me it was in an accident in January. Their competitors are the ones who told me. They wanted to make a car that had 12,000 miles look like it only had 3,000 so they could get more for it and present it as a new car. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don’t even look

I brought a Nissan Murano from a “gentlemen” at a local dealership who claimed the vehicle was under 100k in miles . It wasn’t until I was handed the title that it stated a whole different set of numbers .( much higher)
Something was off but I got side tracked with the birth of my daughter and taking care of my children so it was in the back of my busy mom schedule.. until recently when I brought this problem back to light so I will be going to the dmv tomorrow morning to get this investigation going to determine what is going on . I talked to one of the boys from the dealership and he claims that it was the Dmv’s fault however when I had talked to a gentleman from the dmv over the phone the previous day he stated that the miles on the title are the actual miles stated from the previous owner all the way in Virginia. I live in another state.. and I feel bad that I didn’t took the time to further investigate this deal when I had the chance before buying..

I'm a used car dealer, and I've noticed quite a few vehicles at auction that have "mileage discrepancies". About half the vehicles are from the local state (this state requires an inspection every year, and the mileage is logged every inspection, it ends up on CarFax, AutoCheck, and other NMVTIS services). But half the vehicles are from neighboring states, and all 3 neighboring states do NOT have annual inspections, so unless the car gets an oil change at a shop that reports the mileage to CarFax, the mileage is never logged. So I carry an OBD2 reader that can read the mileage on the ECM or ABS module. Usually when someone rolls back an odometer, they just rolled back the dash, but not the mileage that is logged on the modules. The auction I go to prohibits OBD2 scanners, but mine is small and I sneak it in anyways. I've seen many trucks and SUVs that have "lost" 100k miles or more. Every now and then I see a car that has a mileage discrepancy, but usually it's trucks and SUVs. Also, not every mileage discrepancy is an odometer rollback. I've seen one car in which the years back it had 40k miles, the following year it was 50k miles, then the year after it had 254k miles, than 62k miles. AutoCheck flagged it as an odometer roll back because it went from 254 down to 62, but I think that whoever entered the mileage accidentally "fat fingered" the wrong mileage, because I doubt that someone drove 200k+ miles in one year, unless it's a commercial driver.

Not sure why this keeps happening. Carfax is cheap insurance and so is the ODO statement from the DMV. I know it’s hard to tell. My diesel truck has 260k on it and it looks like a 30k mile truck still inside and out so be careful.

Copy the VIN # and go online to get a VIN report for just $1. You will see every owner, whether or not there were any body damage/accident reports and you will get the correct odometer reading. This is how I found out that a car I was going to buy had the incorrect mileage. The guy showed me the mileage @ 154,000 miles, but when I ran a VIN report the correct mileage was actually 277.000 miles and had been in an accident, salvage title. Do your home work before you buy a used car. A paper trail can land the seller in jail!

It’s not buying from a private party, it’s doing your homework prior to the sale. This fraud happens everywhere in Miami, both dealers and private parties do it. You have to run the car fax, have the vehicle inspected and make sure title and all paperwork is correct. Take pictures of seller, his Id, his tag, etc. A legitimate seller won’t mind.

    • @zoomanx9661

With a dealer, at least you have the option to purchase an extended warranty, the extended warranty I bought for my car did what it was supposed to do, and I had to replace a water pump on a Ford when you had to drop the engine just to get to it, before people figured out how to get to it without dropping the engine.
