Hoping Mr Kraus gets well soon 😊. I could wiggle the wheel on my 77 RS when the wheel bearings went bad. I was glad it was not the final drive. I don’t remember how I changed the wheel bearing, but I know it was pretty easy and I didn’t have any special tools other than a nice collection of regular mechanics tools

It seems that the Germans built into the airhead platform both simplicity and complexity. Engine design is simplicity, but for example, rear wheel bearing set up and front brake caliper design seems over the top for something that could be straightforward and easy. All the best. Joe

Vstrom to the rescue! Should be able to get some china copies for not too much or used ones. Old guys (like Klause) are always having noises in the rear and drive issues.

You got that right Dave, audible rear drive issues is something I’ve been familiar with for years. Nothing out of the ordinary.👍🏻

Good luck with the wheel bearings. Have fun on the V-Strom and the camera. Good that your injuries are healing. Hwy 395 is always fun.

I’m sure hoping it’s wheel related. I’m seeing you and the DR are bonding again. Love the thumpers.

Heating the hub & tapping out the bearing (aka "heat'n'beat") sounds like a job for the guys at Brown. It sounds expensive. Best of luck. Sleep on it.

      Unfortunately more than that. Oi.

I have Mr. Kraus’s twin brother which is a 77 RS with the original 9.5:1 compression ratio and it runs quite strong because I have it optimally tuned for dual plugs, ignition timing and carbonation along with the 40 mm BMW exhaust system.
The bike has a lot of torque and you can really feel it vibrate at around 3000 RPM when getting on it and it is pulling strong.
Just wondering, do you feel the vibration on your bike also ?
I also have a 2023 RT and my 77 RS vibrates quite a bit more

I don’t feel any out of the ordinary vibration, though I don’t have as much seat time as you on airheads. I started riding in 1974 but the RS is my first Beemer. I’ve gotten pretty acclimated.to it in the past 3 years.

Hi Joe. On 2nd thought, thinking this through a bit, of course a strong running 77 RS will vibrate more than my 2023 RT which is 46 years newer with all the improvements that come over all these years. What I feel is the torque pulses which are actually a good characteristic of this motor when it is optimally tuned.
I spent many hours experimenting and tuning ignition timing and carbonation on my bike many years ago in the 43 years, I have owned it. With the dual plug, high lift rocker arms, 40 mm exhaust, lightweight flywheel, euro Moto electrics digital Crank triggered ignition system, lightweight starter motor…. And all the time optimizing ignition timing, carburetor jet Sizes, and needle positions.
So it runs strong and at maybe 3000 RPM there might be a slight amount of chassis residence making the pulses feel a little bit stronger
      Again, I cannot compare a 2023 RT a 1977 RS
      Cheers,
      Mark

Replace the word residence with resonance and carburation :-)

Or the last guy to work on it I’m sure they were done by the same gentleman.

….and the last guy was a total inept, blind, mechanically ignorant old geezer that couldn’t see a torque wrench if it bit him. I think I’ll call him to come do the work again. 👍🏻
