Raiden V is the latest game in the famous Raiden series. It came out last year on Xbox1 and got a director's cut with new content this year on multiple platforms.
I had my doubts about this, but the game far exceeded my expectations. The level design resembles and is up to the standards of Raiden, the scoring is good and fun and there are still mean sniper tanks everywhere. The game is most definitely worth being called a modern Raiden game. The music is also amazing and I really like the fast pace of everything. It gets quite hard later on too, the bullet speed gets super fast. My only complaint is that the game is somewhat lacking in the visibility department, especially in some of the very zoomed-out sections. Everything is really tiny and the bullets often blend into the background. It's not a deal breaker though, since you can work around it.
The game is quite long, about 70 minutes to complete. However this is about the length of a Raiden two loop clear, so as long as you see it as a 2-loop game with new content on the 2nd loop, it should be fine. The game doesn't feel that long though, because of the high pacing that the game has.
The game has a bunch of weapons but only three really have a use, since the rest are just inferior in comparison. The catch plasma kills popcorn instantly, which is incredibly good for scoring. The reflect laser does an incredible amount of damage if you manage to jam the crystal into an enemy. This is especially useful on the final boss.
In order to face the TLB, you have to 1cc and level each weapon to the maximum of level 10. Balancing this and figuring out what the optimal weapon is for each section in terms of survival and scoring is quite challenging. It's a bit like Strania in that way.
Scoring in this game revolves around speedkilling, collecting medals and not getting hit. By speedkilling you also increase the flash shot meter and increasing that increases the maximum multiplier that enemies give you. Medals give you about 1000 points each and 300 each at the scene clears. You can auto-collect all medals on screen by not shooting for a second. Balancing this with speedkilling is also pretty tricky. Not getting hit is also pretty big, since a full life meter is worth 100k at each scene clear. There is also a hidden sol and miclus in each stage. In order to uncover these, you have to hover over the sol for a few seconds and for the miclus you have to shoot it. The game keeps track of a whole bunch of score statistics on the sidebar, which I think is super neat.
The director's cut added these two mission stages. In these stages the boss is invincible, but shooting them makes them drop medals. The amount of medals depends on how much damage you're doing. Jamming the reflect laser into them does by far the most damage, so you want to do that to get the most medals. You don't lose any life if you get hit during these missions. Instead you lose 300 medals and 300 medals worth of score gets subtracted from your total score. Depending on the rank you get, you get a bunch of resources, a silly amount of resources if you did really well. This definitely makes the director's cut quite a bit easier than the original.
The game has this weird cheer system which I kinda ignore since it's kinda dumb and unnecessary. You basically get cheered on and cheer other people for doing stuff and that fills the cheer meter. Using it gives you a super attack, but it only gives you x1.0 on every kill, so it's not useful for scoring fortunately. It is useful on the mission stages though, so I do use it there. The cheer meter still refills by itself with the cheer system off.
I managed to get the JP voices by downgrading to version 1.00 and then copy-pasting the JP voices into the ENG voice folder.

That playthrough was outstanding.
I always play with the Spirit of Dragon because of its insane firepower. The DC version of this game made it much easier with its bonus stages allowing you to fill up your resources and shields, and I was grateful for it. My only complaint about Raiden V is that it makes you jump through hoops to fight the TLB. I love that the DC version fixed stage 7 by adding more cannons and AA guns. Same with adding more big ships in stages 6 and 8. My highest score in the DC version was 84 million in 2017. On the XBox One, I managed just over 80 million for the achievement, but that took a lot more effort. =)
Last - I don't think you need to 1cc to reach the TLB, but rather play well (S-Ranks?) and max all of your weapons. I've fought the TLB a couple of times, but it was from credit feeding (because when I'm playing for fun to 1cc, I always stick to the homing plasma and then the vulcans [powered up to about level 6 over the course of the game] for the stage 8 boss, ignoring the blue laser entirely).

Those bullets move faster than the ones in most bullet hell shooters. I'm impressed you were able to even register their position considering how fast they were, let alone dodge them.

Y'know, when u using catch plasma, it's like punching to enemies instantly. And also, it's satisfying to see that and the multiple score.... I like that powerup. :)

I've been playing this game since my birthday this year and boy is it fun. Although... I was hoping you'd get positive judgments from Eshiria on how you destroy the enemies. I'm puzzled how you got poorly judged for Scene 2 in Stages 3 & 4.

The fact that this play was done on Normal Diff, and the BOOLIT SPEED is already SANIC level..

@@explosivemodesonicmauricet1597 then you have "Pristine Danmaku Hell" from touhou Lunatic mode and every cave games that have both dense bullet patterns and bullet speed, with cave's games having even more oompf than touhou+ raiden
Just played on Hard...it's Hard. Especially later levels. Mind you, stage 4 is kicking my ass on Normal. Stage 3 on Hard....ouch. 😥

The Homing Laser, Homing Missiles, and Support Ships make you practically invincible in this game.
The homing lasers that are the individual beams, or the big bending toothpaste laser? I assume the former but I guess they both kinda home in on enemies.
I found the “homing lasers” (weapon 3) very effective at clearing popcorn and just doing the stage portion in general for the most part. I did however find boss fights almost prohibitively challenging due to the low damage output. You have to see EVERY phase of every boss/mid boss. Cool weapon though and I wonder if it can overcome those weaknesses in the right hands.

can you tell how to reach TLB? i have tried to maxed out all weapons and S rank even on the mission bonus mode...but it didn't allow me... help me :(

Yeah you can't restart sections and you must 1cc.
i reached TLB yesterday :D... and using continues is fine actually.. but ofc, the game should be started from the very beginning of the game. so yeah i guess this is the actual requirements to reach it:
- max out all weapons
- should start the game in the very beginning
- should be in stage 8-A or 8-S to reach TLB
- 1CC isn't actually required tho, i used continues 6 times or even more...and it's just fine

I love how this game evolve from a simple "Destroy The Crystal" type of plot to "Destroy it, because these Crystal can reset life" type of deal...

Unfortunately if you buy the game there is only an English dub. I only got the JP voices in here by swapping files around and even then that only works if you downgrade to the first version of the game first. Not sure about the PS4 version.

Ralgore there is and indeed the subtitles on the play field itself, I wish there was a way to remove the characters from the HUD completely but sadly you are stuck with their ugly mugs the entire play through. It’s worth putting up with though very good game once you get into it and dirt cheap at the moment picked a physical copy up for $10 new in a sale.

@BMO Yeah, found mine in a U.K. store called GAME new for £10 (so actually about $12) PS4 version with soundtrack CD. It was about 2 years ago now, might have just got lucky.

Is this Steam or GOG? I bought the Steam version. At 53:07 in my game, the smoke effects inside the trench looks white and caused slowdown. I tried to force the game to run on dedicated GPU, but the game crashes on startup.
Not sure what that is about, but this is the Steam version in any case.

I fixed the FPS drop by upgrading my RAM to dual channel. Damn, the enemy bullets are fast. Makes me want to downgrade back.

you're supposed to use finesse though that's the whole thing about raiden, each enemy attack has a solution, many can be evaded by simply looping around in figure-8s or tapping

I just say I'm quite bummed. I bought this on the Xbox one when it came out. I wanted a pc release but it was an exclusive with no indication of going multiplat.
The near deal breaker for me was no Co op. Still bought and did enjoy it, but it's so disappointing to seem them releasing a directors cut on other platforms with Co op and NOT updating the Xbox one version to include it. Guess I'll be forced to rebut for just one feature.
Lastly, those bonus missions I saw, are they only part of the directors cut?
Yup the bonus stages are exclusive to PS4 and in my opinion make the game a lot more playable if you want to 1CC, as they give you a bunch of extra fairies. I tried the pc version first and it’s near impossible not to die without those (at least for me).

I much prefer the Giant Purple Plasma Dick of Fuck You, a.k.a, the Homing Laser, as my go to weapon in this game. Pair it with the Homing Missiles, and Support Ships, and you are practically invincible.
Could've been more awesome if they played the ost "Tragedy Flame" in the final stage.

I like the original best because I played a lot on an original arcade cab back in the day (would love to own one of those now) 2 comes a close second. I do like V but none of them were quite the same after 2.

Yes you can. You can change the voice volume in the settings. Unfortnatly it's also turns off the voices at the end screen, but you can still read what they are saying. I usually play without voices, but sometimes I turn them on, for the plot. Don't think they have to much to add, except I'm happy that I had voices on the first time I got the bad ending :D

It is a great game, with a wonderful soundtrack, but with infinite continues and the fact of starting again exactly where your ship was destroyed and still not losing any power up of your weapon system, makes the game very easy even in very hard mode. Every conversation also annoys a little, but the big flaw is the little difficulty, shmups must be brutal, I still think the Sega Genesis classic is better.
You can try playing to beat the game with less continues, or without using any at all.
I'd rather that a shmup has infinite continues so that people of all skill levels can enjoy it, from casual newcomers to 1-credit clear chasers.

the dialogue is stupid and annoying. a story line for this game was a dumb idea
The actual game is pretty good (although far too many projectile types and colours, and very fast moving backdrops), the "Directors cut" is total shit if you ask me. Inane Story mode ONLY (the only way to play is to turn OFF the dialogue, but it still puts text for the story at the top of your play screen!) and a crap Boss mode, that is your lot. No score attack or anything. Hardly any options to tweak the display. Its as bare-bones a directors cut I've seen.
