The Series after the CNC General is somewhat not winnin the heart, yes it's good in Graphics and bla bla bla, but like something is missing. The feeling. The CNC Generals and the Red Alert gang is the way to go, and I hope they remake this old Masterpieces.
I can see why Starcraft and Age of Empires became so well known. Compared to the same games that came out around that time, they look way more put together. Smoother animations, clearer what's going on - at least compared to the games of the same time period.
Age of Empires II is literally ageless. After 22 years, it still manages to be relevant. Quite incredible.

Starcraft, Total Annihilation, 1998 Battlezone, C&C Red Alert 2. AoE2 was a quality game for its time, obviously, but nothing huge about it.

3 games i played that i didn’t find on your list:
-Total Annihilation Kingdoms (1999): you mentionned TA, but not this one (last game from Cavedog)
-Sacrifice (2000), a 3rd person RTS game
-Metal Fatigue (2000) is a mech-type game, where you can build mechs, and vehicles. Battles can happen on ground, underground, and in the sky. Truly awesome !
Battle Realms is an underrated RTS... it brought some innovation not seen by its peer. It allows some units especially the range units to have 2 attacks.. like a archer will fire arrow at a distance but will switch to hitting the enemies using the bow and kicks when engaged at a melee distance. And the archers actually fire the arrows in a arc.. especially in a long distance.

Total Annihilation is simply out of its times, its concept, scale, ability to mod are just rocket science in stone age.
Well, it's easy to see how RTS became really interesting and intuitive in early 90s and intensively evolved until 2010. After that strategy games became online, free to play or remasters. Rare strategy series are still a thing.

Warcraft,Rise of Nations,LOTR battle for middle earth,Command and Conquer Generals,Company of Heroes,and Battle realms are my favorite strategy games and the only strategy games i've played

I absolutly loved Dune 2, The game is realy satysfying and a lot of fun to play. Was the first Dune also a RTS? i was sure it was more a adventure game, i remember only flying in the desert and talking to people to make them farming spice for our fraction or something like that, but i think never finished it, maybe there was something more with RTS elements later on.

Total war is TBS turn based strategy, and RBT real time tactics. More disappointed they didn't include the AOE series....

I remember first time seeing that arcade game called Phoenix back in the early 80s at a local arcade. I saw those stars go up on their own, and I was completely mesmerized by that animation back then. That's kind of what got me into the gaming thing.
14:02 Played many of these games especially all of the Age of Empire games but Praetorians is so underrated. This game was fast-paced and tactical. There is nothing quite like it on this list.

3:00 although I never played it myself, Dune 2 (not a sequal to Dune) is the underrated, forgotten grandfather that laid the foundation of literally all RTS design decisions we know and love today and even the success of WoW can be traced back to Warcraft which took Dune 2's design.
I like how Command and Conquer (1995) was the first RTS game to be exciting. Also, I am impressed with Age of Empires II's remake and so that game will be played. Stronghold Warlords will be played next year.
I noticed KKnD (Krush Kill n Destroy) and Medieval II Total War aren't in the vid !

Games like Patrician are not just RTS, they are partially TBS. If so, then KOEI Masterpiece must be included. Mount & Blade
was inspired by KOEI classics, btw.

Generals was the best C&C in terms of gameplay, Red Alert 2 and YR were the peak of C&C, then... EA happened.

I can say games from 2004 to 2005 developed very fast , you can see Lord of the rings, Company of heroes and many other games from 2005 still looks good!

As someone pointed out: missing KKND, Close Combat series and I would add Myth: The Fallen Lords., Reunion, Theme Park/Hospital, K240 (RTS for Amiga) - PC clone - Fragile Allegiance (1996). There's a lot more, but it depends what is strategy in your opinion. Anyway great vid.

11 years legacy and still continue to play this amazing game with tons of other mods like Shockwave, Rise of The Red, Contra, etc.
Jeese, I just realized Sins of a Solar Empire is over ten years old now, and Ironclad still occasionally puts out content for it. And it is still really pretty. And it's still wicked fun.
Me too. Such an awesome game but it will be more awesome if it has a campaign/story mode.

its not only about graphics. great example is creeper world 3, or particle fleet: emergence. Mechanics and good ideas are much stronger then graphics.

Great collection brought me back and I've seen some games I missed out on ,their is a few more I've played that u have missed ....Vikings conquest ,power monger ,centurion ,rise of nations ,their is so many strategy games I will add

Time between 2000-2010 were golden ages of strategy gaming. Today they turned strategy into hack and slash.
More like 1997 - 2001/02. After that period RTS games started to decline. Rapidly. With few exceptions, like Rise of Nations and Forged Alliance, there is not much to remember after 2002.

Im currently playing Settler 3 (history edition). Last played when I had hair a long time ago. That and Starcraft (1&2) have made a happy teddy bear.
I missed: Total Annihilation Kingdoms, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, Swarm Assault, Anno, Sumbarine Titans, Supreme Commande Forged Alliance, Star Trek Armada. But you got all the great deals that defined the Strategy genre. Thumbs up !

i was very surprised to see a lot of less popular games on this list that i used to play as a kid.
Brings me a lot of memories and a few forgotten gems, but where is Z by Bitmap Brothers? Not a classic RTS, but still a real-time, unique, and for me one of the best!

3:00 Dune 2, the grandfather of Real-Time-Strategy, and the older sibling to Command and Conquer.
Fun fact: the engine of Dune 2 was called "Command and Conquer engine", and was used all the way up until Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. The "players" are even called Houses!
