Exactly. I think that pixelated horror games just have a certain unnerving and even more scarier effect than a realistic environment with sharp looking mobs. There's nothing scarier than a blurry figure in a low fps, and low graphical quality horror game.

It's amazing what minimalistic horror can do, especially when having that little element of reality that makes it all the more unnerving. It's like Pac-Man, but you're not running from ghosts, and we know what a T. Rex does to its prey...

Fun fact about 3D Monster Maze:
Animated in real time at 6-frames-a-second, Evans built a random maze generator, assuring that players would never learn the path. Somewhere within the randomly generated maze is the monster - a massive 8×8 pixel black and white Tyrannosaurus Rex - looking to eat the player up!
As the player moves through the maze, the T-Rex becomes calmer or more excited depending on how close you are to it. On the screen, as you move about, come updates to help you get an idea of where the T-Rex is…

There is no map of the maze - you have to draw it by hand if you want to try and keep track of where you’ve been or if you’re going in circles. The thing is, while you’re drawing your map, the T-Rex is hunting, and the longer you’re in the maze, the faster the T-Rex gets!

I remember one time I was playing In the dead of night and my dad saw me and started up a conversation about him playing the 7th guest when he was a kid. I love how much horror games have improved.

I’ve been playing horror games my entire life (almost all games from this list 90s forward) and nothing has come close to the scariness of P.T. It just hits you differently man. Lisa’s design is impecable.
