Wow, how nice of you to produce this video, I bought an RC 5..and just started trying to look at all the ways I can use it.. You showed me some things that I didn't even consider...I want to thank you So much.

Have the RC-5, it’s awesome. However, if you are running it through the effects loop you must be wary and make sure you adjust the drum volume BEFORE you let it play. Otherwise it will scream at you. Hopefully a firmware update changes this.
Thanks for explaining the small details that make a difference. I wish that they would make it possible to save different settings for Track 1 and Track 2 which would be helpful for rhythms. Considering that one can change the rhythm variation through external pedal, technologically it seems possible to create different rhythms by default and attaching them to different tracks at the same memory slot.
Hi 👋 Paul , thnx for yer videos . I had RC30 boss. Since it’s not working anymore .. it had a function ( donno what’s called ?) I could strum my guitar in rhythm and RC30 wud pick up the tempo of my strumming . And hi hat wud start . Rather than choose a rhythm first and then strum the guitar .. does RC 500 has that function ? Could it pick up the strumming . ? Tempo . Appreciate so much if you guide. Thanks
When using a momentary footswitch to control memory up/memory down, do you have to re-engage the RC-5 pedal to start the loop after switching memory? I like the idea of having a verse/chorus rhythm section saved but am wondering how to make a seamless transition when cycling memory. Thanks for the video!
Great question and the answer is no! You can go from one memory to another seamlessly and it will play if there is audio on both memories. 👌 if you make sure the stopping option is ‘loop end’ then you can press the memory up/down in the middle of the loop and it won’t change until the end of that loop. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing this but is there any way to create own drums in DAW and load to looper? So far I know only about own WAV file as basic loop section in looper but it doesn't fit at all because it depends on input signal. So is there any approach to load own midi drums as drums?
Not on these two no, but you can load SMF with the RC-600 and create your own with RC-600 as well. ruclips.net/video/CvYEyoQn1Eg/видео.htmlsi=uH-P_SjR-l5_wMHC
Hi, I’ve got two questions for you:) 1. Am I correct I could use the input of the RC500 straight out of my Mustang Micro? According to the manual those inputs handle -10db up to +4db, so line level(instead just ins level like zhe RC5 with its -10db) 2. Can I do verse/chorus using the RC5 by simply assigning a midi to memory change and have the two tracks as such? Big thanks in advance! Thank you for your work!
Hey 👋 Yes and Yes. 1) you can always control the amount of input in the settings and the play level of the loops too 2) yes but you won’t be able to save the loop and move memories whilst it’s playing. One of the limitations of the 500. Watch this workflow as an alternative: ruclips.net/video/sBovcjfWgQ4/видео.htmlsi=DJaRzpnTJGKLjM3B
Great Video, I have to ask though, is there any kind of sysex editor for the RC5? I swaer, if you could replace the individual drum samples with your own and upload your own patterns this pedal would become an absolute monster for live performance.
Hi JP, thanks for this great video. Especially interesting when your were talking about part 1-4 for each pattern. I just bought me a rc-600 and somehow expected that it should cover all the features of the rc-5 plus much more. But now i am searching for the pattern parts you are describing here without success. Can it be that this is a feature exclusive to the rc5?
Hey 👋 So yes, it’s a feature that isn’t in the RC-600.. but fear not! You can have your own rhythms, how EVER you want them on the RC-600.. obvs I’ve made a video about it! 🤣 take a look here: ruclips.net/video/CvYEyoQn1Eg/видео.html
I tried your technique to have a customised rhythm by changing memories up and down. It worked but I could not get it to change immediately i.e. without having to wait for a bar to end. So I set about doing the same but staying on the same memory. I send midi commands to toggle the rhythm parts on and off as required, using an FS-7 footswitch. This makes more sense to me as I can alternate the drum sounds between verse and chorus right on the beat where I want it.
First , thank you for the explanations, which made the drums section much clearer. But now , what i understand about the Boss Tone Studio is that it allows only to download .wav files in the RC5, even for files which are supposed to be "Rythm". So it uses the memory to store a drums wav file, exactly as a backing track and does not build a drums pattern in the RC5. Did i get it correctly and do you know if it is supposed to be improved
Hi Paul! Great video! thanks. One cuestion. I Have Boss Rc500. Can i get more rythm patterns? is there any way to update the firmware or something similar? Can I upload a beat archive (to the rc500) and use it like another rythm pattern?? I use to play latin and folklorical musica and i would like to have more rythms patterns... Thanks!!!
Hey Agustin 👋 Regarding the rhythms on the RC-500, you can’t get any more rhythms unfortunately. Perhaps in a future update they will allow this but they have only just allowed this to happen where you can import MIDI files on the boss RC-505 MKII and the Boss RC-600. Of course you could always record your own rhythms as a loop and save that to the different memories but it wouldn’t take up one of your tracks. You could always overdose on the top of that though if you changed from loop one to loop two, if you were in single mode you would have to have the recorded rhythm on both loops. I hope this makes sense?
I hope to find a way to change the actual beat of the kick drum. Every sample I've found on the RC-500 has a pickup on the half beat. Bump, ba-bump, bump, ba-bump. I need bump, bump, bump, bump to accompany a particular dance style.
Hey John! I just fired off an email to you about a drum/loop problem I'm having with the RC-500. Any help you can give would be soooo appreciated as I am at my wit's end with this pedal and ready to just keep going with my RC-30. Cheers and thanks!!
Hello, I saw your other viceo of the rc 5 to make it a bakcing track machine. Can I use the RC 500 for that? And be able to switch tracks up and down? or do I need an external pedal as well? I only want one machine for all that. Do you recommend me another one please?
Yes. ALL the features in the RC-5 are in the RC-500 and you would be able to switch tracks up and down if they are saved with your backing tracks on. what you could do Is either use an external pedal like an FS-6 / 7 and program that as memory up and down, or if you are literally playing a backing track and not looping, you could change the 3 buttons on the RC-500 so the REC/PLAY becomes PLAY/STOP, the STOP becomes MEM DOWN and the TRACK SELECT becomes MEM UP. This could be all done on the one machine without anything additional.
That set up on the rc 5 for memory 20 and 21 was a good tip. But once you go to the next memory with the different variation, won’t the drum beat stop and have to turn it on again? Also, is there a way to use the fs7 to control the variation change on the rc 5? I can’t figure it out.
Hey Mike, so going from one memory to another doesnt stop if you have the rhythm set to play on the rhythm start menu and its not set to off. Regarding the variation, its different on the RC-500 and you have to use an assign with a midi pedal - there is no way around this. shame.
I haven’t as I no longer have an RC-300.. but it’s worth a shout. Have a look at Ben Rowlands music channel. He’s connected lots together including an RC-5 & RC-500 to make a modern RC-300. But now the RC-600 is out.. so that would be the answer.
Hi John, many thanks for this video... straight to the point explaining how to use these awesome loop pedals! I love the RC5 as it has pretty much everything I need from a looper in a very compact pedal, awesome! So it can import wav files...!? meaning that I could import and loop my own beats as an alternative to using the internal drum machine for example? Or one could simply have entire pre-recorded backing tracks? Many thanks again! :)
Hey Chris. So yep and yep to your answers. I even made a video about turning the RC-5 into a backing track machine. You need to watch it here - ruclips.net/video/txztkFgg7wU/видео.html
Don’t think you’ll get it from standard but a good work around is to import it as a loop if you have one at the right BPM. Quite like the sound of the cajon on these - suits my style - acoustic folk/pop.
Hey JP, I just joined your Loop Like A Pro Class-The tips look great! I have a question about this video. Sorry for the long post; let me know if you’d prefer questions like this one elsewhere. I mirrored all of your steps on my RC500, but I am getting a different result when I try to record. I had no trouble setting up identical tracks, adjusting the rhythm tracks for variation from one to the other, and swapping between them in real-time seamlessly using my FS7 set to track up & track down. My issue has to do with recording. When you start record on both your RC5 & your RC500, your REC/PLAY light flashes, which, as you say, means not recording yet. Then you press REC/PLAY again and recording begins. I am getting a different situation when I start to record. In my case, pressing REC/PLAY turns the button’s light solid green, and the display shows a green progress bar. If I press REC/PLAY again, I get a solid orange light above the button, indicating overdub, yes? Also, if I try to record, it only records one bar of audio before looping. As you demonstrated, my memory/record/loop length setting is 4 bars, but my individual track measure settings are 1 bar. Can you help?
Certainly. Firstly thank you so much for joining the Loop Like A Pro Course - Hope you find it useful. Second - check the status of the RC-500 under Rhyrhm - Start and make sure that is under ‘Before Loop’. That’s what will make it flash. Before you record. Then change it back to how ever many bars you need. That part is optional and it can just make it a little easier so you don’t have to press the REC button at the end of the loop. Hope all that makes sense. If it’s still playing up, you might have something switched on your not aware of, so therefore try this on a completely blank track from scratch and then if that one works, give the name you want and then write it to the Memory number you need. 👍🏻
John, When you connect your mic to the RC-500, I noticed the mic input indicator light flickers as you talk or sing. Are you using a microphone preamp before connecting to the RC-500? I’m asking because I’m on my second RC-500, and the mic input light does not flicker unless I use a microphone preamp before connecting to the RC-500. My understanding is, after talking to Boss technical support and reading many reviews on the Internet about the RC-500, that this is an issue with the RC-500.
@JohnPaulMusicUK How would one do that? I tried outputting my sound/headphone jack from ableton live/Scarlett into the input but the volume was extremely low for me.

Hi JohnPaul, thanks for all the informations. On RC5 Can we split the signals, the rhythm just for the Out B and the Guitar to the Out A?
Hi 👋 Paul , thnx for yer videos . I had RC30 boss. Since it’s not working anymore .. it had a function ( donno what’s called ?) Hahaha. Use the phone and loopy pro anywhere! 🤣
Why mic level in rc 500 is so poor ?
Rhytms are much loader.
There is a built in noise suppressor on the mic input. It’s set to 50/100 by default. Try turning it off and it should improve.
The drums still suck overall. Would be great if they allowed the user to add custom made drum loops or at least add custom drum sounds.
Make one as a loop. 👍🏻
