I remember Neville well.my dad jimmy Allen was a guard on Mersey rail ,when Neville drove the 503/8s.I used to go to work with my dad,he let me operate the door controls and do the bell
,and often had cabrides with Neville and other drivers.
Going down to mollington street and sitting in the drivers seats of all the 47,37,40 20 class locos.Neville was a lovely kind hearted man.a gentleman.as was my dad too.
Thankyou so much indeed for posting up this video.it has brought back many happy memories.
    Thanku kindly.

I worked with a couple of Birkenhead lads, later E Port but sadly, none of these lads. I started on the Railway in 1990. I just caught the last of the great BR days before we all succumbed to Privatisation. Happy days.

The driver Neville looks about 15 here. Well thrashed in places. RIP George, I bet you were a hoot to work with.

Really great to see. I have a few photographs of the dock railway back from the eighties but I really wish I had taken a photograph of the original Hooton signal box.

There was two signal boxs Hooton North Jcn and Hooton South Jcn , Hooton Sth was the bigger box , I was a Signalman at Hooton North in 1969 / 70 , then it closed , before that I'd worked Signal boxs at Wallasey Grove Rd , Canning St nth , Brook St , then went on to work all the boxs on the Wirral , including James St P S B , and then Sandhills before I finished I'd worked about 23 boxs including Rock ferry box , happy days .

So, there was I, thinking 'a taxi ride from Elesmere Port to Birkenhead Docks????'. Well its the Wirral Channel and it's free.... Great Video and my thanls to the doner. Two things I picked up from this was: one always expect train stations to look exactly like they did the last time you used them and 30 years is a lot shorter when you are looking back at them than looking forward.

The days when you could run through points, drive from the wrong cab and buffer straight up. A year later second men were gone...

Great video thanks. Bridge at 5;56 is Green Lane not St Paul’s Rd, Brittania Pub on corner.

I've always wondered why there are abandoned railway tracks in Birkenhead town, always thought they should do something with them, it's a shame they are just left there to rot

Even the remains of the level crossing on Canning street shown at 7:22 are all gone now, and the old footbridge, just in case anyone's watching who doesn't know. You can see it on google maps street view. I can remember when it was still there, and the signal box.

Good old Lee, or young Lee as he was then. Bet he'd rather be driving a 47 to Birkenhead Docks than driving a 220 out of Newcastle now! Superb video of great times gone. JG.
