Should have never allowed "new math" into public schools in the 1960s... I find great joy in tutoring math students (gr. 3&5) since the teacher told me to "forget the book, teach it the way you know it." Multiplication and division of decimal numbers goes from, "I don't understand this!" and after five minutes, to their eyes lighting up with "I get this now!" I always encourage them to "practice this at home, too."

Me toooo, the martin was so bright and direct, I normally associate that with cheaper guitars, with solid spruce tops and rosewood back and sides, and thay's probably the reason.

I just re found this comment and wanted to add Huss And Dalton is now my favorite guitar company. My best friend died in a car wreck and his main guitar was a custom Huss and Dalton. Mark Dalton had a replica made and gave it to the family for free so they could raffle it off to help with funeral expenses. It raised 8000$ for them. Mark personally invited me to tour the factory and that he would show me around personally. Amazing man and amazing company. Much love ❤️ ❤️❤️

It can somewhat hold its own, but it definitely doesn't have the low end of a Martin, which is very noticeable. I have no doubt they are great guitars especially for the price, but they're not for an acoustic enthusiast. They would be good for a beginning-intermediate player for sure.

  • @sbolfing

I got it correct - BUT, I truly was surprised at how well the Orangewood sounded! The iconic Martin sound was a dead giveaway (for #3), but it took listening to several different tunes to put the H&D as guitar #1. Really fun and informative video!

  • @VenancioPortalatin

I had the Huss & Dalton and Martin switched in my guess. My favorite without knowing was the Martin from the get go though. It just had a subtle amount more of balance to my ears. That being said they all sounded really great and I was shocked with how much that Orangewood held its own. I'm sure with a few more years of play the Orangewood will open up a lot and sound even better. Been looking for a good less expensive backup to my main acoustic and this video has made really consider getting an Orangewood. I loved both the Martin & Huss & Dalton as well and if I had that kind of funds I would no doubt pull the trigger either one of them.

Fun video! My son (15) and I got them right! We picked the orange wood immediately. The tone in the middle is a bit weird/different. The size of that Martin made us clue into its low end profile. All good stuff

  • @GameJonez

This was very interesting to me because depending which genre of music you were playing, I went back and forth between the Hudson and Huss, but the Martin was the least attractive sounding to me in every case, which was surprising. I have requested an Austen from Orangewood to review as I focus on the $180-$250 segment. Liked and subbed. Good job.

  • @Ironworthstriking

It really depends on what we mean by "sounding old"
Torrefied wood definitely changes the sound of acoustic guitars, and I've noticed more volume and responsiveness. Those are definitely two qualities of great old guitars, but in my opinion, the bracing under the hood affects the sound even more than wood choice.

  • @floridasurffishingjcaprice3077

I nailed the Martin for its distinct mellow tone. I couldn't hear a difference between the H+D and the Hudson. I am currently Guitar Hunting in that $600 dollar domain. Lots of great guitars, but none available to play before making the purchase. I never like to make a return. I'd rather make a hands on choice. Thanks Again Jeremy Great as usual.

My favorite sounding guitars, in order were:
    Orangewood - bass and balanced
Huss & Dalton - great bass & boomy
Martin - a little too brittle
Probably if the Martin was set up and had a neck reset, it would be different and my ranking would change.
Really, the orangewood is VERY IMPRESSIVE!
Hopefully after you do a neck reset on the Martin, you could do this again. I have a feeling the Martin may go to #1.
Either way, great video and I love all your videos!
    Thanks!

Got them all right. But that’s because I own a D45 and a orange wood so I can tell right away between the two other one just fell into place after those two. Awesome video though. OW is a serious contender with mid level acoustics. They are just going to continue getting better and that price is going to go up so people need to grab them while they can at this low price point.

  • @szabolcskiraly6323

Hi Jeremy, the H&D souded suprisingly somehow "dusty" but very nice and rounded, the Hudson was loud and clear, open and wide and chimey with lots of open highs and mids like tiny-little bells, sounds modern and expensive (!), but not "old", your D-41 was unmistakably strong, powerful, detailed and everything I like and deeply appreciate, maybe the cracks, maybe the time, who knows... my absolute favourite, hands down, but I' m a blues-rock man - now I know what I want to buy, thx. I'm 47 tomorrow, and my ears are older as well, I think one can try, but can't cheat: "Aging" needs the Time. I'd send you the price of that "your favourite" Hudson, so you can pass me that Martin any time 😁 By the way, what You and Mike have done to Raymond and Joshua was absolutely incredible, one of the most amazing things me and my wife have seen in the guitar-community since like...... years, big kudos to both of you, guys 🤠👍🏻God bless you all, keep on playing and posting!!

Before watching this video, I placed an order for the Orangewood Hudson today, and I'm looking forward to receiving it. Having said that, the Huss and Dalton was by far my favorite, and the one I would buy if I had the money. The Martin came in second, and the Orangewood last. But the fact is that the other guitars are over 5x or 7x the price of the Orangewood, so I'm still happy I placed the order and looking forward to playing it.

  • @ftlaud911

#1,#3,#2 in that order. HD had full sound with better highs. OW was thin on most tests. M was full but missing those glassy highs (typical). I chose HD for the win. Good test - I like Blindfold challenges because it makes it all about the sound and not the name on the headstock. Great review!

  • @bross63
    @bross63 3 года назад +1

I picked them all correctly. There is nothing quite like the round, full tone across the full frequency range of a good, older Martin. The highs are loud but not harsh or brittle like on many guitars. The H&D and Orangewood sound good, especially the Orangewood at that price, and many may prefer their bite in the highs. But to my ears the Martin is the truly magical instrument of the bunch.

Honestly I chose the third Guitar on all 4 videos , because it had low-end - mid - top end tones well balanced & a warm nice tone which I very much like. I don’t think I can afford a 1970’s Martin . That now put me back right on square one, on my hunt for a 6 string . My mind was first set on a used Gibson, then I watched a video Rhett Shull choosing a used H&D with a great tone so I was looking for a used Huss & Dalton torrefied one. Thanks for a great video, Onward & upwards for me then.🙄

Commenting before the end of the video. If #3 is the Orangewood I will be shooketh. Pretty sure it's the D-41. it has a very open and full sound. #2 sounds a bit choked and #1 feels like a mix between the two. Predictions #1: H&D #2:Orangewood #3:Martin.
I think I could pick out the Martin because it sounds a lot like my HD-28 duh, I know. My HD-28 is 2020 I'd be interested to see a new Martin vs the old one. What an amazing set of guitars.

Stopped before end to vote: 1 = Huss & Dalton, 2= Orangewood, 3= D 41. All sound good but to me 3 sounds deeper older more resonant, 1 sounds almost as resonant with warm tones, and 2 resonant with brighter tones. 😎👍

My favorite was always #3, then #2. Preferred #1 over #2 in first sample.

I have two Orangewood Guitars. A Brooklyn and The Hudson. I Also have, 2 Martin's and 1 Gibson. But, for the money. The Orangewood guitars do hold there own. Thanks for the video.

Do you like the sound of your Orangewoods? I’m looking at getting on of the higher end ones but not being able to play makes me nervous about the sound quality/ build of the guitar. Any opinion on your experience would be greatly appreciated!

I preferred the Orangewood Hudson by a long shot. It had much more sparkle on the top end and balanced full frequency response. My preferences are in this order 2; 3; and 1.

I had the Martin at number 3 from the beginning. The Martin totally stood out and I couldn't tell much of a difference between the other two, but I thought they sounded good, just not Martin good.

Got it! Took me the whole session though to decide between the Huss and the Martin. You mention "Feel" (emotion)...yep also the response to your playing. The Orangewood takes the points for the price for sure and sure sounds pretty good. Martin had that mature sound and the rosewood well, it's rosewood. Gotta say this video made me less of a rosewood snob. I do have a D18 and and Eastman E10P which I just bought and learning to appreciate the crispness vs the mellow rosewood tone with my 1974 D28 and 2000 J40. The Huss had everything including the higher price but if one can afford it why not life is too short, even if you are 13 which I am not. Imagine at age 13 getting a great guitar like the Huss or a fixed up 1970 Martin D 41. Again life is too short. Thanks and Cheers!

The Orangewood was brighter than the other two. It was close to the H&D, but brighter. The Martin was obvious due to the scooped mids.

I got all three after the first set of samples. The Orangewood reminded me of a friend’s satin finish Larrivée. I thought the Martin sounded much like you’d expect it to. The H&D sounded very balanced. I can’t say that any of them sounded older, but I also think it’s hard to get some of those nuances from a microphone.

i had the D41 correct as number 3. Depending on what you were playing, I mixed up the H and D and Orangewood. Switching to headphones i got the H and D correct.

I could spot the Martin immediately but of course that’s a very special guitar. Got the orangewood and the Huss and Dalton mixed up. I think the biggest lesson here is that if us guitar nerds can’t spot the more expensive instrument, the average music listener won’t think twice. Play what you can afford and what you like, throw the name on the headstock away!

Looking for a Martin i'm watching tons of vids. Flipped the 1. and 3. 😏😬
The HD sounds more Martin like than the Martin itselfs. Maybe i will stay with my Yamaha AC3M with its warm and hearttouching sound. It is new, with A.R.E., just a few weeks at home but from the showroom of a big shop in Germany. Thank you Jule, - you know what i like ☝😄💁‍♂️😊

The Orangewood is great for what it is. But that's pretty much it. The Huss and Dalton sounded way better blind folded. I am so impressed how great this guitar is. I need one of those. If I have get my hands on one of em, I'll have to get one.

Very nice work.. The guitars all sounded good.. in the hands of a skilled guitarist (like you). I was more interested in the tunes that you were playing. Be nice if you put up the same video of you playing but without the guitar pictures and clouds that are hiding how you are playing each tune..

My guess was 1. H&D ,2. Martin,3. Orangewood. My reasoning was that 1&3 sounded alike to me and I knew the H&D and Orangewood had similar woods, I thought the H&D sounded more like the martin to me.The orangewood sounded tighter to me but maybe with age it would sound more open. My son and I had a ton of fun guessing on this video. We did not use headphones so maybe that had an effect on our guesses .

My pick was #2. I bought a Martin D-41 that didn't sound like any of the Martins I'd owned before. Next thing I knew, the bridge came loose. Sometime later I bought a top-of-the-line Taylor. Suburb guitar.
