  • Huss and Dalton has been making beautiful, fine-tuned acoustic guitars for decades now. But how do you tackle their catalogue and find the right one for you and your budget?
On today's episode, I'll walk you through my 5 favorite Huss and Dalton guitars. The origin of this episode is born from a major snafu on my end. However, Huss and Dalton's incredible customer service and lasting value they provide to customers led me to making this episode.
Huss and Dalton is known for making powerful guitars. Every guitar I play from them is also extremely comfortable. The neck feels like butter, and construction is incredibly solid. Whether you're looking for crystal-clear flatpicking tones or smooth, deep fingerpicking tones, I strongly recommend you check out Huss and Dalton's acoustic guitars.
The one guitar that I currently own on this list is a true anomaly in my taste. I've always felt like on paper, the guitar that I own would be one I hate. However, this guitar sounds like nothing I've heard given its wood and construction. Seriously, you might be just as surprised as I was when you hear this bad boy.

I just stumbled upon your podcast... NICE!
Like you Tony, I too have a one that got away... due tor physical restraints, an old injured shoulder, I sold my H&D 000 12 fret, TC Adi over figured Hog. I miss it almost daily. I have since tried another boutique brand but could not get along with the neck. I took a hit and traded it in on a new build H&D 00-SP with a few custom touches. I anxiously wait as it gets built and delivered.
Thanks for this top 5 report.
I have subscribed to your channel and will be checking out more of your podcasts in the future.

Tony, I love my Huss & Dalton so much I go running around wearing a Huss & Dalton cap every day, lol. Was lucky enough to pickup a new H&D TD-R Custom Honduran Rosewood back in 2005. One of my all time favs for sure!

    Hi Tony
About 8 years ago I purchased a beautiful pre-owned Huss & Dalton DS Custom - slope shouldered, Adirondack spruce top, rosewood back/sides, large sound hole, ebony fingerboard and bridge, snowflake inlay, and wood trim. Beautiful guitar, but interestingly I still find myself going back to my Gibson J50 for the sound and playability I want - but every now and then I’ll play the H&D.

I have a DS standard and I love it-great tone and great look-and at a not too bad price when you look at the market-Jerry Huss did the neck by hand and it shows and feels like it -most comfortable neck I have ever played

I bought a Huss & Dalton 000-SP, all Koa (top, sides, back) in January of 2023 and it is by far the best guitar I have ever played. Yes, the neck is like butter and the power level is amazing. Sustain just goes on and on and the overtones are so pleasing. Nothing I’ve played before or since can touch it.

Tony! Most importantly. YES. Marc Andre Fleury (my favorite goalie of all time) is a fantastic choice, and while I love the Minnesota get up, the blue Pittsburgh throw backs the penguins wore in Fleury’s time in pittsburgh would be perfection. Good luck on the hunt!

    Hey Tony,
Always interesting content my man 👍, I blame you for like 90% of my GAS issues ahah! Or at least that's what I tell my wife! This brand definitely stays below the radar ( Or at least for me ). I'm a Martin boy here, I own two of them and I noticed something I'm sure you have as well. The second acoustic I purchased was a 000-15SM and I do enjoy it man, Anyhow... my guitar nerd buddy picked up a similar acoustic to this body style although it's a 14 fret instead of a 12 like mine. I played it and it floored me, it had a glossed finish, binding and a beautiful fretboard to boot. ( I'm not sure if it was Ebony or Richlite ) but it felt great and it was black throughout just like a fine piece of Ebony. The guitar had GREAT low action right out of the box as well, My Martin was high and I needed to sand down the saddle a bit and tweek the truss rod to get it to my likings ( No big deal but worth mentioning imo ).
The point I'm driving at is if I can turn back time I'd purchase that Orangewood myself at just about half the price ahah! Diminishing returns certainly has a lot of truth to it.
    Tommy~

Love the guitars you featured. I had never heard of the manufacturers before this video. If you do go for goalies, think seriously about Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins. He is having a fabulous year, including scoring a goal the other day. They are my team.

Hey Tony, cool focus on Huss & Dalton. Question, with regards to the model with the larger soundhole, what's your experience of how this affects the tone and volume of the guitar? I've been told that a larger soundhole i) increases the volume as it can project better or ii) it decreases volume and affects tone as there is a smaller soundboard to resonate. It can't be both, but not having played any guitars with a larger than standard soundhole I'm not sure which.

Important question: Does the larger soundhole make it easier to retrieve picks? OK, I play fingerstyle, so it isn't really relevant to me. I have never lost a finger inside.
BTW, that L-13 is a stunner.

I just found a used guitar I wanted at GC but it had something going on. I thought it was a wire and I talked the counter guy into ripping out the disgusting UST that was in. Sounds perfect now. Is a 1998 Tacoma DM25LE. Unable to find info on that model anywhere. Do you have any resources on those? It’s a Mahogany/Spruce dreadnaught.

Hi Tony the only thing i can say about your jersey is just because the Blackhawks are not having a good year that doesn't mean you should not were their jersey with pride, my father was a Tampa Bay Buc fan from the beginning back in the late 70,s and they went a long time without winning a single game but he wore their jersey with pride so don't give on them.

Martin Guitars has a "Satan Is Real" display in their museum. Really cool. On another note, Tony, you should collect jerseys of RETIRED goalies you love, who are no longer in the NHL. That way you're staying loyal to your team. Just a thought...

I have a recent story about experimenting. I recently experimented playing DADGAD using the top side of the fretboard with fingers pointing down (Preston Reed style), it's actually pretty cool. If you play chords on the lower 4 frets but leave the top strings 'A' and 'D' open, the fingerings for many tasty chords simplify significantly when compared to playing the normal method. Since you can slide similar shapes up and down the guitar, it's really easy to give a song in the key of D a fresh sound (once you get used to it, give yourself at least a month to get used to it). Here is a standard chord progression in the key of D in DADGAD.
Bm - 999700 - (bar the 9's with your index finger, play the 7 with your ring or pinky finger) (VI)
G - 555400 - (bar the 5's with your index finger, play the 4 with your middle finger) (IV)
    D - 000200 or 1212121100 - (a D5 down low, or you can hit the major 3rd up high) (I)
A - 777600 - (bar the 7's with your index finger, play the 6 with your middle finger) (V)
There are other chords you can try with the similar shapes: Em - 222000, F - 333200, F#m - 444200... and so on.
The 3rd string (the 'G') is where you can add some chordal expression by using suspensions. For example, try these variations of Bm:
Bm - 999700 (standard minor triad sound),
Bm - 999900 (sus4 sound, use index finger to bar all lower 4 strings)
Bm - 999600 (sus2 sound, use pinky for the '6')
Bm - 999000 (augmented 5th, flat 6th, still sounds pretty good)
Note that you can keep the Bm - 999700 fingering and slide the index finger up and down one string to transition back and forth between the chords.
For the G chord, try hammering the '4' on the 'G' string 555000 -> hammer-on the index finger -> 555400.
    Now... experiment for yourself. Cheers!
