  • Lionel Hampton All Star Big Band at the Northsea Jazz Festival in 1978. This wonderful band made just one concert in the UK and I was lucky enough to be there. They are playing here John Coltrane's 'Moments Notice' and the fine tenor sax solo is by the least known member of the all stars-Paul Moen now no longer with us. He does a fine job here. See who you can pick out as the camera works around the band.

Paul Moen was a very close friend...we both moved to NY from Boston the same time...played thousands of times together! He was responsible for getting me on Lionel's Band when Frankie Dunlop took a Hiatus..back in the 70's! Lionel loved Paul!

What a marvellous band, for this occasion; if only it was possible in these times to retain all this skill, power, class, fun, achievement. Lionel gave so much and deserved to enjoy this from the centre.

That's my old boss David 'Panama' Francis on drums. Looks like Arnette Cobb on tenor, Pepper Adams on bari, Charles McPherson on alto. Gates stayed musically up to date!

@stevebul Hi Steve, It is indeed 1978, the date seen at the end is for the next item on my video tape(I wasn't quick enough to edit it off). If you read my note to the download you will see why I am so sure. Keep swingin'. Jim.

Charles McPearson,Pepper Adams,Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie,The Condoli Brothers.Great arrangement part of the out chorus they play part of John Coltrane's original solo.Paul Moen plays a nice solo and what can you say about the old man, Lionel Hampton can solo on any tune. This should have a touring band for Lionel. Not just a one time thing.

Panama Francis is the drummer, I don't think the Candoli brothers are present (?) - but Joe Newman and Cat Anderson are, and that is Jimmy Maxwell. I also think I can see Doc Cheatham. I'm not sure if that's Curtis Fuller in the trombone section... Pepper Adams, Charles McPherson and Arnett Cobb have already been identified - but I think that's Earle Warren on lead alto. Guitarist could be Al Casey or even Tiny Grimes (?).

@JAZZWOLF33 Bong drums? Those old jazz dopers would use anything to get high, lol... Great band, definitely Arnett Cobb on tenor 'cos he's propped up on his crutches.
