Woody would never have a weak band, the cats were ALWAYS on top. Bill Byrne (5th trumpet/road manager) was one fo the nicest people in the world. Thanks for posting.
A SUPERB BIG BAND BLUES PLAYED BY A BRILLIANT BIG BAND OH Mr HERMAN HOW THE BIG BAND WORLD MISSES YOU ITS 08.30 IN THE MORNING AND IM SWINGING AS THAT OLD PHRASE GOES ONE MORE TIME
Funny story about Bassist JOHN ADAMS, that “GREAT AMERICAN”, per Woody. JOHN ADAMS himself posted this to FB “Woody’s 1Liners” a few years ago: => “The story on Woody's calling me a "Great American": I got to go on my 1st of 3 tours of Europe with the band after I had been in it for month or two. We were playing at the memorable Montreux Jazz Festival, and as I was ending my solo on Greasy Sack, Woody, likely being a little jet-lagged introduced me as, "John Adams, a Great American, who has his own insurance company!" We all cracked up knowing that he was thinking of the other patriot, John Hancock. The follow morning on the bus pianist Pat Coil, veteran of the band, leaned back toward me and said, "you watch, since he called you that and it got a reaction, he is going to introduce you that way every night." And for another year he did that very thing, but never with the insurance company reference.”
CORRECT PERSONNEL: WOODY HERMAN HERD 1983 in Barcelona: Saxes(L-R): Seth Brody, Frank Tiberi, Jim Carroll, Mike Brignola Tpts(L-R): Bill Byrne, Scott Wagstaff, Byron Stripling(L), Mark Lewis, Paul Mazzio Bones(L-R): Mike Davis, John Fedchock, Randy Hawes P: Phil DeGreg, B: John Adams, D: Dave Miller Note: Jim Lowe labeled 1984, it is definitely 1983. Per saxist Dave Rickenberg: “This must have been ’83. Paul McKee and I both started at the beginning of the tour in January of ‘84. I replaced Seth Brody at that time”.
Yep, Woody used to dedicate GREASY SACK to “to All the McDonald's restaurants everywhere”, and then all of a sudden in the late-80’s I noticed he switched to, “All the Fast-Food restaurants everywhere”. Gotta be that McDonald’s threatened to sue him. I wish I knew the scoop!
Byron Stripling is the high note trumpet player. He has a very fine solo career at this point ( 2013 ) . Agree with comment below : Bill Byrne was a great guy, fine player andbest road manager Woody ever had.

Looks a LOT like Jerry Pinter on 3rd Tenor (between Tiberi and Brignola).
One of the things I hate about the past, is when it is better than the present. John M. Hill, author; think of this band in 2025 !!!! JMH
Thats my Bass teacher!!!!
