LOts of real heavyweights in this band (the last real "all-stars"' big band from L.H.). Terrific rythm section with Ray Bryant on piano Billy Mackel on guitar, Chubby Jackson on bass, and Dave "Panama"Francis on drums). Hampton himself is stil at his best on vibes (Panama does not need a second drummer !!!), and there are some good solis from amongst others Joe Newman and Cat Anderson on tp, Earl Warren on as, a good trombonist (Benny Powell ???) . The white trumpet player is brilliant, I believe he is also playing "first", I have forgotten his name. And Arnett Cobb saves In The Mood.
JAZZCLASSIQUE white trumpeter is Jimmy Maxwell. Legendary studio lead player from New York. Trombonist is I believe Tricky Lofton. He also played with Bill Berry's All Star Big Band
Cat still has his great chops, Joe Newman is even better if he isn't forced to play "to hot" but more melodic stuff. It isn't Benny Powell on trombone, he would play a more smooth bop trombone.
