I'm 11 years behind you. I hope you decide to build it again. How beautiful to experience even so much as a taste of our youth. Very, very different times.
My Dad's boss, who was quite well off, bought me this in the early 60s. It was ten shillings & six pence, that's 52.5 pence in todays currency and my parents couldn't afford to spend that sum on a plastic model. I was so happy and spent ages making and painting it. Not to the standard of this beautiful model though. Thanks for reminding me and showing all the latest detailing possibilities.
Nostalgia sweeps over like a cosy blanket lol. Made this model myself in childhood, very nice to watch and I sometimes regret all my models were thrown away.
I built that very kit as a kid - probably in the late seventies, so it had already been around for a while - and the glimpse of the artwork on the box lid gave me a powerful nostalgia hit!
When I was knee high to a grasshopper in the early 60s I built many Airfix kits to a fairly (very) low standard. The poor finish did not matter then because the models main use was to stimulate youthful imagination with thoughts of valour and fantastic adventures. 60 years on I really appreciate the skills and time you have devoted to making such a fine detailed model that can be studied with awe. Now my thoughts turn to the bravery of the crews who flew these aircraft.
Ah, my first model. Can still remember the roughness of the raised rivets in my small hands. Twisted off parts and loads of tube cement. Thanks for the terrific build and the double dose of nostalgia. Still modelling after nearly 60 years. Surely I can't be that old!!!!
I remember sat at our kitchen table, watching my dad build this Airfix model. He used to build some of it each night and I'd look forward to watching the model take shape. This was back in around 1970.Thats a class model you built.
Righteous. The attention to detail is amazing. I know it's cliche to say but it can't be said enough. Wow wow wow! And someone said once before this is much more than model building, this is a true art form. Absolutely beautiful.
AHH, the old written instructions from Airfix! The words 'locate and cement' are part of my childhood! What a terrific job on a kit I've never actually built. Marvelous 😊
Aged 9 I banged this Airfix kit together in an hour or so, glue everywhere, painted a kind of camouflage in a lurid green and wondered what the 'beaching kit' was, why would it have wheels?? What more can I say😂?
@@iconicshrubbery Aged nine I had the Airfix Mitchell. Didn't paint it but, choosing a solid nose variant, I filled the thing with lead shot and tube poly cement. 24 hrs later the nose had kind of collapsed and looked like someone had worked it over with a hammer. Still..... I was pleased 😄 Never did completely set.
Honestly sir - this is amazing ! You’ve had the same chance to build the Sunderland from the 1:32 Zero kit 😂, but you’ve choose this ancient piece of plastic and the result is absolutely awesome . Congrats 👏👏👏👍
Good morning my friend, I remember building this kit many years ago when I was about twelve year old in the late 60's, I purchased it from I believe a long gone shop at the top end of Colombo St in Christchurch, you have done a extremely outstanding job on this kit, your painting and weathering were absolutely fantastic, if only Airfix would either re-do the molds or make a new mold, but such is life, best regards from a ex ChCh lad now living in Melbourne, Les
@@mr_plamo the shop I was thinking of was, Hobbday Cycles, the had a model section, but I assume they ard long gone, I visited Acorn last time I was back in CgCh, cheers mats Les
If I remember rightly, I think I paid 10s 6d for it, as it was a series 6 kit. Series 1 was 2s; Series 2 was 3s and Series 3 was 4s 6d; Series 4 was 6s. At least those were the prices when I started modelling so many years ago (but my memory could be playing tricks on me). I can't remember how much a Series 5 kit was. I do vividly recall hanging the Sunderland from my bedroom ceiling employing cotton and drawing pins. Of course, my modelling skills were nothing remotely close to Mr Plamo's standards, and sadly they still aren't. But, I still enjoy making model kits in my late 70s.
@@Gynrathat’s interesting about the pricing Brian…my pocket money didn’t stretch any further than the Wellington bomber…I’m 74 and just had a combined vitrectomy/cataract in one eye , so I suspect my detailed modelling days are over…so it’s great to see this chap producing such an exhibition kit.D
@@derrickgreen9020 Sorry to hear that, Derrick. Fortunately, though I wear glasses, I still have high acuity eyesight. The thing that holds me back the most is the mild arthritis in my hands that limits how much modelling I can do at any one time. They are still very steady hands, though, so I'm not going to complain (any more than I already do). 😄
Quite extraordinary! When I saw the thumbnail for the vid, I thought "That's an excellent illustration of a Sunderland" - not realising it was a photo of a model! Really top quality work and attention to detail throughout, the highly artistic paintwork really makes it special. I think Roy Cross was for many years Airfix's secret weapon - I bet they sold a ton of models just because of his artwork! His book "Celebration of Flight: The Aviation Art of Roy Cross" is well worth getting.
Fantastic work! Some of the old Airfix kits are still real gems in the right hands. Amazing considering the methods employed in designing those kits all those years ago!
As a kid in the seventies and collecting 'Commando war stories in pictures' magazines two of my favorites issues were 'Sunderland Ahoy' and 'Flying Battlewagon', both stories about this aircraft. Remember one pipe smoking crew member was named Pop Kellett lol
What a truly fantastic and inspiring build. I remember seeing this kit in the toy shop window when I was a boy, with the evocative artwork on the box. Seeing it again brings back memories. Really enjoyed watching your build and your fantastic skill. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing your fututre work. Thank you.
Great to see you start your YT channel Andy 🤟 What an epic build of a classic aircraft 🫡 Well done my friend and look forward to getting the popcorn out and watching many more hours of your talented work 🤗
Beautiful, my late father built that for me when I was a kid. He put lights inside, I had to connect a battery through one of the fuselage stores hatches.
Wow! I’ve built the Airfix Sunderland kit twice. It was the last model I built in my teens, in the mid nineties, and it was the first model I built when I got back into the hobby in my late thirties. Interestingly the kit doesn’t appear to have changed much in fifty years from your kit. But what I can say definitively is that whilst all three kits have the exact same shape, neither of mine looked even remotely like yours when finished! 🤣 What a work of art. Bravo!
Wow, thanks so much for posting this video. It has brought back happy childhood memories for me. I got this kit for Christmas in the late 1970's when I was a teenager. Unfortunately my skills were not a match for yours by I remember building, painting and enjoying the kit. The box-top artworks by Roy Cross were so enthralling and evocative. I used to spend almost as many hours studying and enjoying the box art as building the kits. Happy days indeed. Thanks again.

An absolutely brilliant finish. The detail and final finish is very well done. I made this model back in the 60's and even then it was an impressive model to make.
Thnakyou for the video, so impressive. You never said at the end how much of the interior detail could be seen, haha. But in 1/72 that was excellent workmanship. And thankyou too for the airbrush shading tutorial. I need to work on mine a whole lot more....

Will we get a new tooled Sunderland?
Thank you Airfix! Hats off to engineering team back in the days with fully movable control surfaces and retractable nose turret!
High praise indeed!
Made this model, back in the 1960s, as a kid. No photo etch in those days. Now 72 and recently acquired it again, perhaps I'll make it one day!
