I listened to this song during the birth of my first child. He is my rainbow baby after 3 miscarriages. The mix of joy and grief in this song is so perfect. We miss you John. You captured the human experience like no one else.
This is one my favorite John Prine songs. I am, with millions of people, mourning the passing of this great songwriter, story teller and standup comedian. We were so lucky that you sang to us for so long. I feel like I know you. How is that possible? Good bye John, and thank you.
First thing I do when I wake up, John, is check on you. It's not time to smoke a cigarette "that's 9 miles long." After seeing that you have made it through the night, I play your amazing music all day long...
@@l2string I had just returned home from the Memorial service celebrating the death of Jesus Christ and his ransom sacrifice, so I was already weepy, when I got the need. My heart is broken. I have loved Mr, Prine for many, many moons.
One summer night before JP released "The Missing Years," I saw him play a solo show at the Rialto Theatre in Raleigh, N.C. (I don't think he even had an opening act.) It must've been 110 degrees in there. Near the end of the show, he played this beautiful, heartbreaking song. I'd never heard it. And all these years later, I can't get enough of it. Especially now.
@@timrolls2854 Continue listening. Go all the way back to the beginning, when he was young and writing songs while on his mail route. Even then, he was already a poet with a comedian's wit and timing. It's terrible that we lost him, but he had a long, productive career, and that means you have lots of great music ahead of you. Listen to what he has to offer--the funny songs, the heartbreaking ones, even a few with a political edge. He was a one-of-a-kind songwriter and performer. Keep discovering him. You're in for a long, rewarding ride.
Folks are always saying this person or that one is the best songwriter of all time. But taking an entire body of work over 50 years ... (FIFTY!) does anyone quite compare to John Prine? Will Alexa ever respond to my daily, "Alexa ... play John Prine" with a "haven't you listened to him quite enough?" If she ever does, I will simply say no, not ever. What is probably most amazing, his work the past 5 years is at least as good, even better, that his first five. Long may you live, John Prine, and long may you write songs.
Just heard a critic, on a wonderful radio tribute to John, say that he believes John really didn't discover who he himself was until the last decade because he was virtually a mailman one day, a star the next...discovered his style later...even John says that he liked his voice better after they had to do surgery near his throat and it changed his voice.
I second your sentiments. Been listening to the same songs as you these past couple days though, and appreciating everything a lot in these strange days.
This song has been helping me thru tough days for years. Hope you will have a Convo w my Pops up there John. I think y'all could make each other laugh.
In the most simple and reverent artists, John Prine is that soul who helps keep our feet planted on the ground. Few can claim that. You recover now, Johnny.
Fantastic writer...Great sense of humour, and,a ton of sincerity. "The Missing Years" is definitely on my list of the Top 50 albums that I've ever heard.
John you have been part of my family sChristmas, my children now there children grew up with your music. Always have sung together your songs at Christmas. Had John Autograph my Christmas CD 25 yrs
If anyone can subtly convey heartbreak it's John Prine. Listen to "Maureen, Maureen.". The compexity of real human feelings he is somehow able to put into a song!
Love his voice have just discovered him during the covid period and thanks to Nanci Griffith interpreting his unforgettable songs and performing with him.
Thanks a lot for uploading Steven. Have loved John's music for years. Would you happen to know what Rachel Peer is doing now. Had hell of crush on her years ago.
I saw a hundred thousand blackbirds
Just flying thru the sky
And they seemed to form a teardrop
From a black haired angel's eye
RIP John

That's not fucking true. It only brought back a memory, and you had to go and spice it up like the Hallmark channel.
Listening to this song and weeping, RIP to an American musical legend

There will never be another like him. My own tears are falling.

Greatly under appreciated!!
The line about the black tear washing all around him and taking his sins away made me cry like a crazy man.

John Prine made music to satisfy his soul. It just so happens that it satisfies mine. Thanks John
Thank God for John Prine.
No need to call in ancient superstitious characters.
Thank his parents, and think John himself.
That tear fell all around me and washed my sins away.
My heart is broken. Rest in Peace John. We won't be okay, but you will.

So very very sad today. We've suffered a huge loss. John, I think I saw the Angel come from Montgomery to light the way for your soul.

Nobody writes like JP.
Ahh John said this song was about his divorce that happened around christmas time
Who the fuck voted thumbs down on this song?

David fletcher I wonder how many songs were a result of that divorce. A lot of the songs on the new album are heartbreaking. Not sure how he does it.
Jay Kobbs was here
😅😊I get you
I get you Babe
Dude on harmonica looks like a Gelfling.
