Halloween 2023 is just over a month away, and we’ve been super busy with a bunch of DIY Halloween decorations and Halloween Animatronic makeovers. In this video, we’ll show you how to make The Other Mother for your Halloween haunt.
The Other Mother (The Beldam) is the villain from one of our favorite stop motion movies, Coraline. She’s a demonic, shape-shifting creature whose final form is a skeletal spider-like woman. We’ve gotten a ton of requests to make Coraline’s Other Mother, and we think that Spirit Halloween’s new Animatronic, Darling Dolly, will make the perfect base for this animatronic makeover.
To turn Darling dolly into the Other Mother, we’ll reshape her back and giver her a brand new costume made with fabric and EVA foam. We’ll sculpt over Darling Dolly’s head with Epoxy Sculpt to create the Beldam’s cracked and pointed features. Her fingers will be replaced with oversized sewing needles and her arms are sculpted with foam clay. Some paint, button eyes, and a new wig will complete her look.
We love how our Other Mother makeover turned out. Let us know in the comments what you think!
Scary Halloween DIY decorations are our jam, so if you want to learn a ton of techniques and get ideas for how to haunt your house or yard, check out the other videos on our channel. We have everything from simple DIY Halloween projects, to animatronic makeovers, to epic original Halloween props. We love to show you how to take Halloween decorations from Spirit Halloween, Home Depot, and Lowes and turn them into one-of-a-kind spooky creations.
Thank you all for your support, and until next time, Stay Wicked!!

For future reference, pretty much any clothing you pull off of an animatronic is going to be acrylic/polyester/basically just plastic, so if you want to dye it a different color, you need a dye for synthetic fabrics. Rit DyeMore or iDye Poly are both good options, remember to wear a respirator, you dye with boiling water when doing synthetics and the fumes are no joke

    • @pucamisc

@@WickedMakersI don’t know what process you did for the dye, but having it in a pot in the stove for a low simmer for 1 hr and adding 1-2 drops of liquid dish soap also help a lot for synthetics. Doing a quick wash of the fabric before hand to get any dirt or oil off that may affect the dye absorption helps as well. Once it’s dyed, rinse in cold water and then warm water until it runs clear. Wash by hand or with an old towel in a machine to prevent the dye from staining the drum.
      Hope that helps!

From my experience in have to dye fabrics for cosplay, you want to wet the fabric before placing it in the water as well. For things that you can't dye on the stove top, you can also do a giant tub of water you've boiled in a kettle and let it sit for longer. We dyed a set of 6 giant fox tails with that boiling water tub method. If you're dying something on the stove, you also can't use that pot for food at all afterwards.

Every single artist whether its sculpting, painting, fashion, or even just putting on your everyday makeup, goes through that awkward "idk if this is going to look good or work at all" phase. Like it never fails, I do this every time I put eye shadow on. I'm like, oooo this is bad. Then I add the rest of the parts and some mascara and all of the sudden its fine, like that awkward stage never happened lol. Its a very common artist thing, so welcome to artistry. The art of keep going even though you think it looks terrible in the middle of a project, just see it through to the end. ☺️

For your tie dye you need sustained heat over a long period of time as well as synthetic dye. If you want super dark for a skirt like that you need at least 2-4 bottles of synthetic dye. It always comes out less dark.
But honestly paint is the best choice for this is you’re not going to wash it because heating up plastic-y fabric sometimes makes it shiny.

Coraline is one of my favorite movies ever. This build is genius. It'd be even cooler if you replaced the voice box and changed it out for one with lines that the other mother said from the movie.

This turned out fantastic! Truly was the perfect animatronic to adapt. I personally think the chest on the Beldam’s final form looks more like a spine than a sternum, but it’s a very specific detail that probably only I was interested in. Those yarn needles really were perfect. Would love to see you guys make an animatronic or stationary prop of the beldam’s severed hand from the ending.

I always wondered this, would you two ever do a QnA video? I have wondered what made you two want to do things like this and why? What was your inspiration to start doing amazing things like this with Halloween props?

Took a dusk walk around light sunset time. Came back at definite dusk, and had to walk 2 miles back on a trail in the dark with a weak flashlight. Really got me into the Halloween mood, especially when I got back to neighborhood area with all the warm Halloween colors and decoration work. Lot of purple and oranges in the distance, it was nice and welcoming from the dark trail.

If the other mother's head in the end is too heavy to keep using her I reccomended making a mold of her head and using liquid foam to make a new head with that mold and just trying to replicate how the head of the animatronic is connected
