      Those "in the know" (Army transport) tell me the old 6 wheel drive Internationals (I think they were petrol engines?) were BETTER than a Unimog. Keep in mind the Army ran a NON-Unimog tyre which kinda capped their capabilities.

  • @abcdef-qk6jf
    @abcdef-qk6jf Год назад +7

    The genius of an Unimog is in the design. 46" wheels gives an excellent ground clearence. The size factor makes it nimble. A relative low weight makes it drive where heavier vehicles just sinks in. It's not that powerful - it doesn't have to be. The lo lo gearbox has a ratio 1 to 675 - making the power more than adequate. The hydraulics makes it possible to use it as a crossover between a normal truck and a farm tractor. It has capabilities beyond what you would expect from such a compact machine. The variety of tools you can use with an Unimog makes it extremely versatile. It's essentially a Swiss army knife on wheels. Doing a lot of jobs possible only needing one vehicle. Which makes it good economical sense to use an Unimog. It can't pull out a bogged tank. It was never intended for the purpose. Special forces, road - and rescue services around the globe love their Mogs. Using it for its intended puposes - it's in a league of its own. You can be getting more ultimate vehicles - but they're more specialized often serving a very specific purpose. An Unimog becomes the go to tool because of the versatility. I've driven various offroad vehicles in the military and later in my civilian life. The first choice for an offroad vehicle having to serve in multiple roles will always be an Unimog. However it would never be a daily driver. In fact when not having to use an offroader - just about anything else would be better on the road. What makes a true offroader great - makes it equally bad on the tarmac. Especially the older rounded nose vehicles were quite an experience on the tarmac - they could travel just above 50 mph - comparable to riding a camel at the same speed... The Unimog isn't the perfect vehicle it's just a multitool getting the job done. Using common sense it will make you go almost anywhere and back. A winch helps - you can bog an Unimog - in most cases it can rescue itself. That's why I and a lot of other people have a soft spot for them.

    Some of the older modified Unimogs from subsidiary company's might be even better in the mud and the heavy offroading, like the Unitrac the uniknick.
    However, they're smaller, lighter and slower on the road/not even drivable there.
    Hence, realistically unusable as a recovery truck.
    One thing the Uniknick and other forestry Unimogs have, that could be useful for recovery would be the hydraulic blade/support so you can easily get anchored into the ground and use your full force on the winch.

    Heavy wrecker that MOR has in Hurricane Utah. MRAP axles both with steering. An 8.3ltr V8 motor and an incredible winch setup. Your Mog is good but Matt’s Off Road Recovery one is better in my humble opinion and I am a 1985 WA Mog owner. I keep mine at my property in Gidgegannup and plan to convert her into a camper when I’m closer to retirement. Need my 200sqm shed first though. Thx for sharing your video. Love the hydraulic system. Can’t wait to get a set of those wheels.

    • @The11901
      @The11901 Год назад +4

      Idk… the arrangement of winches is impressive but since they’re electric they’re limited significantly in how long of a pull you can do. You’ll melt an electric winch on a long pull but these guys have a much heavier hydro winch. The long term durability of a gas v8 and the box frame isn’t on par with unimogs either. I’d give it to MOR with a diesel and hydro setup.

    • @ldm125
      @ldm125 Год назад +2

      The MORR heavy wrecker is probably a little more capable off road but in terms of winching, it's not close. The weakest winch on this 'Mog is a full ton stronger than the Wrecker's strongest winch. Different tools, no doubt. I love them both.

    • @johnthomas594
      @johnthomas594 Год назад

      @@ldm125 the heavy wrecker doesn’t like the soft stuff very much. Although in that video where it got stuck, I don’t know if a mog would have made it out without assistance either.

    • @buddy1155
      @buddy1155 Год назад

      Pro for the heavy wrecker: better in the soft sand because of its lower weight and it has no steel winch cables.

    Really cool rig and a nice job to have....Me I'm retired but for the last 15 years I have owned a U1300L, non turbo, slow axles, good enough for where I live. (Smallholding in Eastern Poland). I bought it with brand new ZXLs on it......and they were great on the road and on Salisbury plain tank training area they would go wherever a Challenger tank would go. But I moved to Poland and the soil in these parts is poor, really poor, Its a combination of sand and clay, it's yellow and yet it dries blue on the walls of the tyres. I put on a set of Michelin Power CLs which are a loader tyre, not rated for speed, but they were great in all conditions.....they have done me proud for ten years but have just started cracking around the sidewalls. I replaced them with larger 14.5Rx20 BKT industrial Chevrons and these seem better still both on road and off, but they are a good bit taller...and strangely rated to 65 KPH, with a top speed of only 80KPH, I am happy with that, I have a 7.5 ton Superwinch on the front and always carry a couple of snatchblocks.......The most arduous use mine gets is hauling wood out of steep sided forests.
