@gl ml - a belief requires thought. In the absence of belief what is? To know yourself doesn’t require thinking. Therefore what you call “our beliefs” is from experience.

@gl ml Ignorance is free to have it as much as you want. Understanding our nature through introspection and scientific tools is a whole lot of different things. I won't deny the progress of science in this field, but there will always be something that science will still be missing. Trying to touch a nonphysical state with a physical stick is impossible. You have conditioned yourself materialistically, so much spirituality will indeed seem fictitious to you. The teachings of Ramana are beyond the mind itself. It rests in silence the perennial language of flow, as stated by him. You call us weak, yet it is you trying to refute and debate unnecessarily. I wish you peace.

Just recently I looked up the etymology of the word “person” and it meant “character in a play”…and my eyes grew really big when I saw that definition, because it led me straight to the million dollar question: “If the person that bears the name my parents gave me is only a character in this epic drama of Life, then WHO IS THE ACTOR?”
This, I believe, is the basis for Self-Inquiry…

The recognition of the True Self liberates the ego from it's own prison and allows it to flourish as a conduit for the expression of the Love, Peace and Beauty aspects of the True Self in this plane of existence. It's still in operation but as a servant rather than the "assumed" role of a separate master/doer. Thank you Rupert...

King Lear is the mask of John Smith. The mask is the means through which the play is enacted. So it's not the mask that is the problem, it's when John Smith feels he is limited by the mask. What becomes problematic is when the self that our personality expresses is believed and felt to share the limitations of the personality, to share the limitations of our thoughts, feelings, etc. All that is necessary is to recognise the nature of the self behind the mask. The mask (personality, individuality) is the particular conditioning of our body-mind. It's not the body-mind that is the problem, what matters is in whose service is it acting and relating, on whose behalf is the body-mind acting and relating. There's no getting rid of the body-mind, or disciplining the body-mind, changing the body-mind, purifying the body-mind,... The body-mind will be purified if the nature of the self behind the mask of the body-mind -so to speak is recognised. The activities and the relationships of the mask will gradually align itself with that recognition. So the change of the body-mind will be an inevitable consequence of the recognition of the self behind it; as opposed to change of the body-mind as a result of disciplining or changing the body-mind. There's absolutely no point in changing or disciplining the body-mind if the self behind it remains temporary and finite. In the traditional progressive path, the purification of the body-mind is a prerequisite to the recognition of our true nature, whereas in the Direct Path it's a consequence, a result, a bi-product of that recognition. What changes in the mask are those elements of it that were previously at the service of the separate self. Only those elements fall away, all the rest, counting our particular conditioning remains but now in service of love, truth, beauty as opposed to previously being in service of the separate self. So the character, far from being diminished by this recognition, the character is simply released from the prison of the separate self; and a character in whom this recognition is taking place flourishes! We don't suddenly become a bland whitewashed characterless person; the character is liberated from the prison of the separate self and it flourishes whatever that means for each character, its talents are then free to be fully expressed, the character is free to go out into the world and to share itself in whatever way is unique to each character, so it's a liberation of the character rather than a crushing of the character.

I bought in Venice many years ago. I pulled it out from the cupboard this morning with the intention of reminding myself which mask am I wearing today. We have adapted to various masks over our lifetime, the daughter, wife, mother, athlete, friend, business owner, professional Etc
It's only when we take off the mask, quiet the mind and go within do the spark of creativity and inspiration flows. The creator experiences life through us and wants to dance, play, love and create in this garden of Eden. Time we started tuning in.

I often wonder how someone can live their life in confusion for years and years, plan a trip for the grand opportunity to sit, in person, with someone who has such wonderful understanding and eloquence in his delivery of self knowledge and wisdom. Then ask their question... and then interrupt the answer throughout. Acting as if they already know the answer. I do not understand this behavior. It seems like a wasted opportunity. And somewhat.. disrespectful.

Noticing a lot of comments about the mind and thoughts , my question is ...
Could every thought be evil ? Is every thought there to distract and destroy us ? Have we never had good thoughts upon which we have acted ? Why is there so much animosity against the poor mind and it’s thoughts ?
The mind is a useful tool let’s not forget that

    • @deandouglas3855
      @deandouglas3855 4 года назад +6

Good and evil are concepts. Yes and no are also concepts. All concepts are thoughts. So if you're asking 'could every thought be evil?' you are simply using a thought (yes or no) to label another thought. It's using one concept to explain another concept. The mind can get tangled up in its own thinking when you start asking these questions.
I do agree with you however, the mind is an incredibly useful tool, as long as it's used that way.

I love what Dean says. My direct answer would be "no". To me, thought is a tool for figuring out what the Self is up to. It serves a purpose. And unless you believe thought is coming from some other source, this is a "feature" (not a "flaw") of who you are. 😀 (Just my two cents)

    • @bornuponawave

@@bornuponawave In order to misidentify with the Mind, the Mind has to be separate from that which is misidentifying with it. In order for the mind to be either servant or master, the Mind has to separate. To me, the Mind is a facet of this jewel of Self that I am. I see it more as a type of geometric form: layers of dimensional expression directed by a guiding essential ... um, thing. HAHAH! If you understood you would stop living as slaves under the system working and working and yeah working and die living thru this other system inside us he is talking about. But he could also give you the name of this unchanging state inside of us but of course he don't, why?
Probably because he already told you but you listen to this kind if messages like it is entertainment.
And if you would now would learn the way yet you are to much ego to go this way because you know this is the end of the road for you as the ego, thinking you know but you know nothing about what's happening.
But you wait under 5 year and then you know who this "people" are that you send your children to and it is not even a pity for you parents anymore and tragic for the children who have parents who have children when they themselves do not understand what life is about.
I can say so much that you parents are the first to destroy the child when you are to exercise your power over the child by saying WE know more than you, WE are adults and you children therefore you understand nothing but YOU listen to us.

Rupert, if you ever view your comments' can you tell me what is meant by prior to consciousness. Nisagardatta uses the term "prior to consciousness" he says its experiential...The "I am-ness" for example is experiential.....and that even the knowing or perceiving by consciousness is yet perceived or known by the Absolute. I think the suggestion is that within the Absolute, consciousness arises which gives way to the "I-am-ness" or sense of being-ness, and the perceiving of experiences of the illusory objective world, which are all experiential....and therefore these are objects or something other than "you." I can understand that I am aware of consciousness and that without it nothing can be know by me at this moment....my illusory experiences are nothing more than consciousness experiencing itself in the moment.....and yet there is a knowing of this, even this can be observed....by an "I" that I cannot identify or observe ....other than I know I am the one that knows or observes the "I am-ness' the "stillness", the being-ness and the "perceiving" of experiences by consciousness. ...not sure if the mind is playing a trick and that "prior to consciousness" has taken me on a goose chase.

Can someone explain: how can be a problem that John Smith or infinite awareness feels that it is the mask? If awareness feels it is the mask the mask will feel that it is the mask without a problem. If feeling it is the mask is a real problem then awareness itself must be flawed or problematic. And if it is said that it is a dance or a game by awareness so that then may the mask feel problematic and so reveal its true nature, then we are speaking of a thing or reality that has a purpose or will and so is personal with intentions. On the other hand how can awareness being pure knowing forget itself? If awareness creates the apparent problem then no one can correct it, unless awareness decides, but awareness does not decide, so there is nothing to do, no reason to meditate it simply feeling that you are the mask or not, depdend on what awareness does without reason, thus awareness is flawed in its activity. Worse, if awareness really knows that is playing or forgetting as the mask, or being limited to the mask, if it really knows it, then it is the same as to say that we our self would know it for there are not two real selves, but is seldom known by everyone.

      There is no mask...

@@abajaj1510 according to Rupert there is an apparent mask. In fact that it does not dissappear. But, When you say there is no mask, what do you refer to when you say there is no mask? Can you really say or know there is no such and such a thing? Never. One does not refer to things that do not have any existence or reality, it knows nothing, so that no one can say there is no such and such a thing. So if you say there is no such or such a thing then you are affirming some kind of reality or existence. And so you are brought back to my original questions. Besides, as Rupert said, without mask there is no play and so you don't say there is no mask, for that would be a part of the play!

Marcos, can you as awareness experience a mask? Mask is a labelling of the mind. Awareness is only aware of itself as awareness....knowing knowing knowing....it is what A Bajaj is writing...There is no mask.

They can't. The separate self is created by the mind using words, language, concepts, ideas and beliefs. Babies have no experience of these things.

james dean right, if you do not become like small children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven as jesus said.
The research on the default mode network (the ego) in the brain shows how this self referential activity is really not established before the age of 9-10 ish. Obviously that differs from person to person. IMO, the ego is basically a carry-over from the animal kingdom for the purposes of survival and hierarchy and all that. Our challenge as a species is to discard the outdated, animal programming and rise into the divine light of one-ness/god/whatever.
Clearly, this is a work in progress.. but the night is always darkest before the dawn as they say.
