C5 Corvette Wheel Hop Fixes (HPI Diff Mount Install & Review)

  • All C5 Corvettes suffer from wheel hop - especially while aggressively accelerating. This is mainly caused by GM's engineers having to strike a balance between the large number of people that just cruise in their C5 Corvettes and another large group that are mainly interested in the C5's performance at that track and the occasional twisty road or on ramp. In this video I walk through some of the causes of C5 Corvette Wheel Hop and do a complete installation and review of the HP Injectors transaxle diff mount. Come along as we fight together against C5 Corvette Wheel Hop! Note. On the C5 corvette the diff is connected to the transmission so it is actually called a C5 Corvette Transaxle Mount!

    Great video! I have an automatic and don’t see a lot of wheel hop, but I am always looking for simple bolt on upgrades. Replacing my sway bar bushings was a big improvement. Need to replace my shocks now that the C5 is just under 100k miles. I can see this as a good drive shaft and transmission stabilizer. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

    I installed my HPI brace. I don’t have a lift so Jack stands it was. It was harder than I thought. Note. The lower bolts need a deep well socket which I had to go get.
    The vibration damper was hard to get to but I got it. The rest wasn’t too bad.
    Final thoughts. I agree with your assessment. There is a little more Noise & vibration but some of it is cool too.
    Now for that burn out!!! Well, I’m still getting a lot of hop but it is better by about 50%

    Great thorough write up! I put 3.90s in my C5 last September, and when I had it apart I ordered an HPI Mount. I ran into a few issues attempting to install, and since wheel hop hasn't been too severe I set it aside. 1) The tip that you gave for drilling the holes larger should solve my inability to mount it to the differential. 2) The countersunk pockets for the bolt heads that mount it to the diff are too deep, as when they are fully seated there is not enough room in the pockets for a socket nor enough of the bolt head protruding to use a wrench. 3) When mating the assembled brace to the subframe, the rubber stoppers come in contact MUCH before the mating plate with the two studs in it. Did you just draw tight and it is not supposed to completely come in contact at the subframe?

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  3 года назад +1

      Sorry for the late response - did you get back around to completing your install? I might have added washers under those bolts (maybe I grabbed some slightly longer ones out of the bin too - to get a wrench on them. It has been a while so I am not positive..

    I really dont recommend 6061 T6 aluminum for anything that experiences high stress and fatigue over a long period of time. Its a material that is good in the right circumstances and has excellent strength to weoght ratio and is super machinable. But it has a pretty short fatigue life. This mount is almost CERTAIN to break in 10 years. A steel one will literally last forever. Its has unlimited fatigue life.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  10 месяцев назад +1

      I hear what you're saying, if you nudge past the aluminum alloys design specs, it will fail very quickly. Otherwise look at airlines that fly day in and day out with tons of stress, tons of aluminum! If it's designed properly, it will last.

      I am 100% convinced it helps a lot! Just look at the deflection the stock mushy rubber has in the video clip during the soft launch I did in my driveway. I have not done anything else since but in the back of my mind I feel like the rear A arm bushings are probably deflecting a little as mine are stock 20 year old rubber. So far it is so much improved I have not replaced them - IMO poly is kind of a pain so I am holding off as long as I can. Report back after you have a couple of weeks of summer driving if you would! I installed this about a month ago. Also supercharged with a PD supercharger. Honestly I can not see any difference in wheel hop. Mine is hopping on hard excel just as much with stock mount. Im running 305's in back with 600whp. What I do notice is more noise and vibration and what sounds like a exhaust drone in 6th gear when cruising. I have stock ZO6 TI mufflers. For me it is coming off. No benefit for the money.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  3 года назад

      Appreciate the comment. Couple of thoughts. No doubt - C5 Hop/Shake sucks. Are you planning to live with the hop/shake? You know there is quite a bit of movement in the stock rear mount vs HPI it is a fact - I even provided the footage. Unless our plan is to "live with it" I would do the rear A arms next (before removing the diff mount) to see if that solves the issue for you. If A-Arm bushings do solve your issue, you can put the stock rear mount back in and if the your hop/shake stays gone you are good. Also, road and tire temps greatly affect the friction between the tire & road. At least for me, in early spring and late fall, my ultra high performance tires don't work so great. Not sure what the temps are where you live. Don't give up until you fix your issue!!! Good luck and report back what you do.

    • @millerfawaz151
      @millerfawaz151 3 года назад +2

      @@Toys4Life People are always mentioning road and tire temps, and I experience the same increased incidence of wheel hop in those temps, but ultimately we should be able to fry the tires on demand (regardless of ambient temp) in a car like this without saying a hail Mary for the diff/trans. Also, what about people with older tires that just want to have some fun with them before dismounting them. What about people who live in a colder area where most driving happens around 50's and 60's. The amount of wheel hop is just unacceptable. I'm in the same boat as @Brian Bouchard. I've had a similar mount for a few years (not from HPI) along with poly motor mounts, and wheel hop was unchanged. I did recently find that one of the rear toe links had an inner end with play. I wonder how much of that is cause vs. effect of the wheel hop. Replacing it did reduce the hop noticeably, but did not eliminate it. Presumably, this is what it was like before the toe links went bad. I'm going with the LG motorsports monoball bearings in the rear control arms next. Keep up the videos if you hunt down the hop some more!

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  3 года назад

      A couple of things. I don't have a torque spec unfortunately but furthermore, it would be challenging to get a torque wrench on the nut side of the fastener. You could put a torque wrench on the bolt side, but that wouldn't be accurate. Therefore, what I did on my vehicle is use the lock washer and when I tighten it down with a combination wrench, I basically tighten it as tight as my arm would allow. Sorry that's not an exact answer, but it's what I did on my vehicle, and my 30 years of experience with vehicles tells me it will be sufficient to hold the fastener in place.

      Maybe it was a special install for someone brought the car to lingenfelter and gave him a check for 20 grand and this came out the door.?

    That mounting scheme of Chevy is for the transaxle/motor to be able to flex in the chassis when cornering, especially, at high speeds.It looks like HPI took that into account with their design so handling should be just fine (maybe even improved).

      Interesting. What would be the importance in allowing the driveline to flex while cornering? Does that keep the car more stable at high speed corners?

      Yes, it's got a GM 3800 series 2 supercharged engine in it that's Cammed and is on E85. It Runs 11.8 at 114 mph in the quarter.

      @@Toys4Life I had a built Series III S/C in mine. Doing a LS swap now. Were you able to further isolate your “wheel hop” issue since you mentioned the HPI mount didn’t fully cure it?

      It's manageable now, but if I wanted to go further I probably would go with stiffer upper and lower a arm bushings, I'm sure they're twisting around a little bit.

      Just installed mine this evening. Timewise it took me a little over thirty minutes. I didn't have to worry about the damper since I've had an ECS trans brace on mine for 9 years now. I'll post the pictures up on Corvette Forum.

    really appreciated the detailed and informed approach to a situation that can in extreme situations, break the car. My first choice for problem correction would be the cornball power steering feel, where I understand not much can be done, except buy a completely different car
