I mean, that's Jack Benny. No one was going to tell him otherwise. Too much of a legend, too old (he's 79 here, remember), and he was sick here. It was fine.
This has come up before and is an easy explain. Jack always played the Jack Benny character on the tonight show, its what the character would have done and the awkwardness when they sat would have been rehearsed and all played their part. It was also from an era when seniority was revered and this sort of thing would have happened naturally back then. Long forgotten in the mainstream now but Mr Benny was one on the biggest stars of a golden age.
