    Brian, g'day from Australia mate. Sorry to hear the news about your friend, interesting to know he passed because of the complications...I'm guessing he was well into his 70's/80's and had prexisting health issues because that seems to be who is being hit the hardest so it's worrying for us guys with friends and family in that high risk age group. Keep safe, keep the videos coming mate...you're doing a good thing for a lot of people.

    It is a shock to hear about Gary---My condolences on the loss of your friend. Great video on the rope seal---Its good to see not only how it supposed to look when seated, but also how it should feel. I would have never taken the seal out once in place (afraid I would mess it up) but seeing you slip it out, showing how to measure to ensure its fully seated and re-seating the rope is only learned from experience!!. Thanks!!!

      I hope this video helps people install rope seals. A lot of guys hate them because they don't put them in correctly and count on the crank to squeeze them in place. Share the video and let people know how to do it correctly. Yes it was quite a shock to hear about Garry, the phone call was very disturbing. He was just in the shop and we were planning on doing some J20 work as soon as the weather got just a bit warmer.

    Defiantly sad news and knew Gary was not only a close friend, but this really hits home that you guys we love dearly, have been exposed to this as well. I wish we all could spin out a magic juan on our lathes and make all this go away. We are doing our part here by staying home as well, and finding that staying busy makes the stress seem to go away. My second Quarantine Quickie #2 was about my grandfathers old carpentry tools getting a make over, and bring back fawn memories of him using these tools. Our best goes out to you, Maria, and Mat during these sad and stressful times. I must get back on our CJ 5, but trying to knock out some long over due upholstery jobs that pay the light bill and food on the table, Bear

Hopefully these times pass quickly and we can all get back to our normal lives.

    I am so sorry to hear about your close friend, I am sure your shop will never be quite the same. It sure is maddening to see people not respect the isolation order. They are the ones causing the spread! As for the seal, thank you for showing us this at this time. I have never seen one but will need this knowledge to seal my F-head . Real bad news about Gary, as you say it always brings home the seriousness of the situation when those close to you go down, it also make it even more annoying when you see others carrying on as if there was no problem. As always an excellent tutorial on installing a rope seal, I think that there are many that just whack it in and then complain the rope seals do not work, fitted like this they are good for many hours running. Many thanks for posting this Brian, this weeks cameraman was so much better, stayed focused at all times, and perfect framing! Stay safe! Chris B.

      @metalshaperJeep  2 года назад

      I leave them off. Stock nuts with moly lube and proper torque is good. Or a high quality metal locknut will work great.

    Hi Brian, thanks for the video!.
    It seems that the rubber crank seals we get now days are problematic. As far as I can see the crank must come out for installing the rubber or the rope seal. Is it not just better to stick to the rope seals now days?

    That is a very useful video, I have been trying to fit the same kind of seal to my 1956 Ford Consul and it keeps locking the crankshaft, my question is there a difference between a graphite impregnated gland seal and the rope seal you used here. I got my seal on e-bay and it has grey silver look to it.

      There are a lot of seals out there today some with graphite and some without. If they are installed correctly I have not seen a difference between any of them. They all seem to work when installed properly.

    Sorry for the loss but nice you have the J 20 as something to remind you of your friend.
    A hypothetical regarding the rope seal... would a person be reasonable to expect a properly installed rope seal to last the same hours/milage as a good rubber seal, or should one only be expected to last, say half or two thirds the life of a rubber seal?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  4 года назад

      The work on the J20 will be in remembrance of my friend Garry. The rope seal will last a very long time. I have an original CJ2A from 1946 with the original rope seal in it that was installed when the engine was built. Does not leak one drop 74 years later. I have put many rope seals in restorations that are going on 20 years with no leaks as well. Do it right and do it once and it will last.

    Hi Brian. I just installed a rope seal in my engine but I've noticed that my crankshaft won't spin at all, could it be that the seal is not sitting properly or that i need to squeeze it better?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  Год назад

      Your crankshaft should be snug but not tight. Get the seal pressed into the block and cap better before proceeding with the job.

    Were rubber dowels the original sealing method, or was it "punch packed" rope seal in those cap side drillings?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  4 года назад

      Both ways on early engines, then just rubber dowels on all later production

    Can I get a rope seal for my 42 GPW at NAPA? I am having trouble finding one.

      I don't use Napa for parts much so I am not sure if they will stock it but I am sure they can order it for you. Fel-Pro still makes a good one, and the one from Best Gasket is very good as well.

    Brian sorry to hear about your friend. If having a choice between the rope seal and having your crank welded up and reground to 2.335 and using the Best rear main which one would you prefer.

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  4 года назад +1

      I use both depending on the situation. If crank is in good shape I will use a rope seal. If crank needs to have seal surface fixed due to a groove or corrosion I will have it made bigger and use a neoprene seal.

      Hi Brian. Sad news about your friend. Stay safe!
      Usually the seal assembly process here in Brazil we uses soybean oil to moisten the rope for approximately 24 hours before installing. It Works very well.

      @@edivonelopes116 When I am using NOS seals that are old I soften them up as well. New seals such as the one in this video are fresh and very easy to work with. Stay safe out there. Brian

    Brian, I am changing out the pan gasket on my M38 late mode L head. I noticed a lot of oil on the engine backing plate. I am thinking of replacing the rear main seal but the motor is mounted in the vehicle. How would you replace the rear main seal in this situation?

    • @metalshaperJeep
      @metalshaperJeep  4 года назад

      Depends on what you have for a seal, rope or neoprene. If you have a rope seal you can get a tool found at auto parts stores that you can get the upper rope seal out with. Usually called a sneaky pete. You will once the rope seal is out you will have to install a modern neoprene seal. You can not install a rope seal in an engine with the crankshaft in. IF you have a modern neoprene seal you can loosen all the main caps a bit and carefully tap the upper seal out with a punch. Then lube and roll in a new seal. Let me know what type of seal you have an I can give you better advice. Brian

      metalshaper Save pulling the seal out completely I did pull one of the packing dowels out a bit and those are neoprene
