Well... All Apple Watches so far have very differing battery lives depending on what you're actually using the watch for. For example: Does your Apple Watch ping you for iMessage, Mail, WhatsApp, Discord plus 20 other services? Or have you reduced that to, say, 2 services? Might make a difference of 10-30%, actually - depending on how many notifications it means a day, and whether you actually read the messages on the watch or get out the iPhone immediately. Is the watch's GPS used? Often? Not at all? Makes a big difference. Do you actually do fitness stuff with the watch, where it actively measures your pulse constantly? 15 minutes a day, two hours a day, four hours a day? Makes such a biiiiiiig difference that it's not even funny. So any reviewer's experience about battery life simply doesn't apply to any viewer (or less than 10%, probably). What counts is merely this: Is battery life better or worse than the older models'. And if a reviewer tells you, he or she won't tell you whether he or she compares it to how the older watch's battery life was when it was new, or how it was right before they got the new model for reviewing. So take any utterances about battery life with a ton of salt. Apple keeps it simple: They say it's more or less the same battery life than last year's model. And they've been saying that every instance of a new Apple Watch so far. Good enough. You'll probably end up charging the new Apple Watch about the same as you'd have your last one.
I have a Series 6 44mm on the way, it is my first Apple Watch too. Thought about the SE, but figured to go with the full spec’d version since I don’t plan to upgrade it yearly.
I'm still on the fence. If the SE hand always on display it would have been an instant buy. As a trade off they could have taken off all the sensors except heart rate. I just don't know how much i will use it... my fear is, it will become just a gym watch

We don't have the HomePod either in Switzerland. But even stranger: We did get Siri with the iPhone 4S like everyone (well, most) else. But we still don't have it on Apple TV. Even though it works fine on iPhones, Macs and iPads.
I have had a Series 4 for about a year and the ECG function never worked...always inconclusive. I have spent 6 months working with support trying to trouble shoot the problem. They finally offered to replace the Series 4 so I sent it in and they sent it right back to me with a note that there was nothing wrong with the watch...so I put it on and tried the ECG and still inconclusive. So I am doubling down and ordering a series 6 and we'll see what happens!
I get so annoyed when tech reviewers criticize new tech because it’s not drastically different than the prior year model. Thank you, Rene, for pointing out that it’s rare for people to upgrade their tech every year.
I used to do the same. It's easy to fall into thinking living in tech means everyone else is as well. But there are new models of cars, appliances, TVs, etc. every year and no one expects anyone to buy them every year. I hope tech realizes that soon as well.
For me main feature is battery life. When apple will build watch with at least 3 days of battery life I will buy it🙂 There's no cons for me when I have to charge this every day and can not use it on weekends without charger
Absolutely. I have almost decided to get the cheaper SE this time and save some money. Will get the full fat 'Series' model once they get their shit together on battery.
I'm very glad you distinguished the review of the Series 6 from the point of view of people who aren't coming off the Series 5, or even have a Apple Watch (myself included). As a newcomer to the apple watch scene, I am very excited! O2 measurement doesn't really mean anything to me...I'm more excited for the blue color option than the pulse oximeter, haha
The complaint of charging a watch, phone, etc everyday is silly. So far with my series 6: I wake up at 5:15 am (snooze until 5:30) out the door at 6:30 am I have everything enabled: ECG, Noise, Activity, Background app refresh, O2, and I’m around 65% to 70% when I get off and get home, around 4:30 to 5 pm (depending if I stop by the grocery store after) Do my wind down and charge it up, and at night for sleep tracking, it’s been using maybe 15% battery, which I then just charge it as I get ready for work.
97 to 94 is a significant jump in oxygen saturation. This is an oxygen disassociation curve which descends very rapidly at about that level. These days having that number at your fingertips, so to speak, is crucial information. Many sufferers of Covid-19 begin to experience desaturation before they even feel any symptoms.
This year was probably less than ideal for seeking FDA certification (and other countries equivalent) for the Blood Oxygen feature due to the pandemic and other reasons, may well do that next year when circumstances are better.
I had an Apple Watch Series 2, I started getting into counting my steps so I decided to get the Apple Series 6. I now feel like Dick Tracy, those that are older remember he had a watch he used to talk to. Its an amazing watch. It did annoy me that they are no longer including the adapter, yet the price isn’t any cheaper. The only thing I wish is that when wearing the watch that my iphone SE2020 would ring when I get an incoming call. I can not always feel the vibration. Other that that I love this new watch. Just a word of advice buy your bands on Amazon. Apple chargers outrageous prices for bangs when you can get them from $5.99-$30 for the same thing. Apple keeps getting better and better.
I wish Apple could offer stainless steel version with GPS and WiFi Only for those of us that don’t want or feel the need for LTE. That dream offer would be nice for regular and Nike watches. Just a wish. ✌️
Your comment is spot on on how people outside the US feel about not being able to make use of some features because of local regulations. It just sucks having to wait for the third party to give the go!
That’s a good question. Substantially better battery life would get me to think about upgrading probably. I paid quite a lot for the Stainless Steel series 4 and it gives me every thing I need in a smart watch so I’ll be keeping it for the time being.
I splurged a couple years ago and purchased the series 3. I honestly thought about upgrading to the series 6 just on looks. It’s just a lot of money I don’t want to spend.
Thanks for the review Rene. This will be the first year since the Apple Watch launched that I won't be upgrading. Just can't see the usefulness of the new features
The new Apple Watch S6 battery is so much better than the S5 and with the inclusion of ARM CPUs in future Macs battery life will improve heavily without compromising on weight and thickness.
I’ve had my series 6 since launch and a s4 previously, it’s battery is bigger than the s5’s and the battery life is better than what I was getting on the s4. All this while being thinner than the s5.
Harvey017 It has been so far, keep in mind though that my s4 was at about 94% battery health when i got my s6. There could also have been some software related bugs involved but for me the s6 has by far out performed my s4, not just in battery life but also sheer speed. Even Siri has been fast on this thing, i honestly wasn’t expecting that noticeable of a bump but it has been.
Apple not including the charging brick is cost savings for them. They can “say” its for the environment but that’s BS. What they should do is give you the option of getting the brick for, like $5.
In the UK the Apple Watch RRP dropped by £20 this year with the S6. It’s an easy trade off for me. If I needed a charging block, I’d just buy one with the spare cash.
I can’t wait for technology to evolve where we don’t have to worry about battery life anymore. The room, Lyft, building, classroom, car you drive, streets you walks down wirelessly charge your stuff!
I’m so happy that Apple didn’t put blood oxygen feature as a health feature. We still don’t have ECG working in Malaysia and alongside some other heart monitor features also are not working. This is a better approach so it’s available everywhere instantly and customers can benefit from it
OK. This is the best Watch review I have seen. The thought and care that you placed into this. Getting an expert, really taking the time to explain the features and benefits. You are so good Rene!
I’m upgrading from series 4 Nike, and I am totally getting the gold steel! I’m planning on keeping this one for another two years and I don’t want that glass to scratch like it has on my Nike one.
Just got my 44mm s6 a few days ago. This is my first one and I love the integration and control of the apps I use on my wrist is very convenient and makes this a satisfying purchase. I work in construction and I'm glad that my bumper case and screen protector come in tomorrow.
Rene Ritchie O, f**k you replied))) I love what you are doing man! Some times I watching your show just because I like this good vibe, even if I am not interested in product)
I have severe Asthma and COPD this SpO2 sensor was the feature I have been waiting for. I need to keep a close eye on my oxygen level with a finger sensor which can be a pain and I also forget. I’m waiting to see how accurate it is before taking the plunge so hopefully it proves accurate. New to your channel and finding it really great and informative.
Great review. I would love to know what do you think about apple eliminating on watchOS force touch. I think it worked great on the watch. For example, now to delete my notifications i have to swipe to the top in order to delete all the notifications, with force touch I used to press and delete all in less than one second!!
Swipe? Just turn the wheel for about half a turn. Takes no time at all. Yes, I miss force touch as well. But it was never a good UI experience in that you had to guess whether a force touch might be required to find a hidden feature. So there was good and bad about it.
@@richbarbal86 Well, the button for removing all notifications is clearly visible when you get to the notifications first. You only don't see it if you first scroll down. So from a UI perspective, everything's clear - you've seen the button, you just have to get back to it if you scroll down first. So from that perspective, it clearly is a much better solution anyone can understand compared to a "hidden feature".
I really feel like the step up from aluminum to stainless steel is like going from a sport watch to straight up jewelry that happens to also function as a smart watch/sport watch. Very worth it.
I don't see any incentives to ditch my series 4 yet. Same design, same battery life.. Micro LED will be the real game changer and with S. Jobs still in charge it would've be done already, such a bummer. Come on Apple, innovate!
Great video as always Rene. I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed this, and I appreciate that I’m part of a small demographic but, the option to use Siri voice for voiceover doesn’t work on the series 6. I’ve tried switching the toggle on the iPhone app and on the watch too. When I leave the menu on the watch and go back to it, it always turns itself off. Hopefully this will be fixed in an update soon. It’s not the biggest deal in the world but, these things matter to visually impaired users.
With regards to battery life: The S4 and S5 were based on the A12's high-effeciency Tempest cores while the S6 is based on the A13's high efficiency Thunder cores. We know that the Thunder cores in the A13 delivered 20% greater performance than the Tempest cores in the A12, which matches what Apple said about the S4/S5 to S6 performance increase, but Thunder also delivered 40% greater power efficiency, something Apple hasn't mentioned but would surely make up for the better battery life a lot of people are seeing (even if the device is now powering extra sensors and radios while maintaining a brighter always-on display).
I upgraded from a series 3 to series 6, the Apple Watch has helped me greatly through my fitness journey and made me more aware of my health. The larger screen, always on display and faster on device processing has made my watch more reliable. Looking forward to the series 9 if we get that high in number!
Rene, thank you in advance for your follow-up work regarding the spO2 sensor accuracy. The Washington Post article on the subject called it “useless”, and backed up that assertion with a record of some pretty poor numbers (oscillations from 85% to 100% spO2 within a few minutes, that kind of thing). I’m very curious if Apple can get their reflective sensor to consistently measure as accurately as a pass-through sensor! Also, can you be sure to report on a comparison between overnight spO2 readings and manual updates? I’m curious if either or both get more accurate over time as the watch “learns” how to interpret its sensor data from a specific user over multiple readings under different conditions. Great review, great video!
Well, do you think the oxygen level although it is a “wellness feature” that Apple working behind closed doors to get it certified and it can be a “medical feature” with a simple update and press release ?
I used to think “why would I want to have a watch I charge everyday? How stupid” until I bought an Apple Watch, and now I can’t live with out it. I use it to track my heart rate, work outs, steps, sleep, alarms and notification for my kids night cams etc... my watch is now nearly as valuable as my phone to me. I charge it once every 2 days just before bed.
I just got myself the new Navy S6 from the local Apple store. I have never owned a smart watch before, so this is my first. I am trying to figure out how to use and get on with it. My biggest concern was battery, but I gotta say it’s freaking solid! And the build quality is soooo premium! Love it!
Long time fan here and appreciate your steadily improving reviews Rene but this type of review is what I and others need. You have slowed down and the level of professionalism you have always demonstrated with your interviews ,keeps me coming back. Your emphasis on the the health and fitness benefits makes the argument for me to upgrade. Thanks again
I have a series 4 gold ss and it has been incredibly durable. After I shattered my very first series 2 aluminum I thought I would never go back - but I’ve decided to upgrade to an aluminum series 6 just for workouts, not for lifestyle - so aluminum will be really an upgrade. I do feel the extra weight on my wrist and I kind of miss the weightlessness from the aluminum chassis. The series 4 will still be great for nights out when no one needs or wants to see the always on screen on my wrist. Plus it’s a little dressier, if that’s ever possible with an Apple Watch.
I just got mine this morning. I have been using a G-Shock for a good twenty years I think. I am a bit savvy with my iPhone but wasn't sure about a watch. I caved, got it, and am just figuring out all the things it can do. Since I do tend to have some medical issues it's nice to have the bells and whistles of EKG, Pulse, and O2 SATS. So far I like it a lot. I will likely buy a rugged type band to compliment to techy watch so it gives me the best of both worlds. It seems very seamless and dialing it into my cell phone was a breeze. Push a button here, push a button there, wait. Done. We'll see if the hype fits the price tag
I have ser 4 and I returned my Ser 5 because I didn't notice anything different now I got the ser 6 and I am feeling the same way .. Considering returning it its very hard to justify as always on does not seem that big of a deal.. None of the other features seem to go unnoticed.
I'm upgrading from the Series 4. To save money I sold my old one for £200 but am now left without my watch until 23rd Oct! I'm constantly missing it not only for time keeping but I also use the reminders app to make sure I don't miss my Colleagues break times throughout the day. It's amazing, not to mention annoying, that I keep looking for the time and next appointments on my empty wrist! How did I ever manage without it? It's fast become an integral part of my day, even sometimes more than my iPhone. I know I need both but not having to take my iPhone out and instead just glancing at my watch is so quick and simple. Ok I've got to go now and have a little cry until my new watch arrives. sniff.
Just got my blue series 6 a couple days ago. I’ve had my original series 0 for five years and decided it was time to upgrade. What I can say up front is this thing is extremely fast compared to the original. Updated the os this morning and was done before my first check a few minutes later. I had to double check both the watch app on the phone and the watch settings to make sure the update actually happened. The old watch, though it hadn’t gotten any updates since OS4, always took a good 15 minutes at least. After turning off all the things I didn’t need and setting up the new features I wanted, the battery life seems very impressive so far. Like it might make it over 65 hours on one full charge. I don’t care about always on display or even rise to wake, so that saves a lot of battery. Even on the S0 I am still able to get 40 hours on a full charge. But the nicest thing I discovered is that Apple doesn’t just catapult the old watch after the new one is paired and set up. I can switch back and forth if I like, and the watch I’m wearing picks up right where the other left off. That is really nice. I was thinking of just putting the old watch away with the old phones but now I’ve ordered a new band for the old S0 and maybe there will be some life left to it after all. Never a bad thing to have a spare and there’s nothing physically wrong with it. For a 5 year old aluminum case there not a scratch on it, and it’s not for lack of trying. The S6 has a lot to prove to the sturdy old S0. We will see how it holds up after another 5 years.
I have a series 3 and I have a lot of health problems with my immune system and my heart is now what the doctors are looking at so this new watch with all the new features like blood oxygen and ECG are super impressive and definitely something I want. It’s a shame I can’t afford it but I’m going to save up and try to get it!
Given the age of the Series 3 design, and that it's being sold brand new right now, do you think the Series 3 will hold up in terms of OS updates compared to the SE? I don't care about the fitness applications as much as the Siri/Phone/Homekit "portal" aspect of it. Is the 3 a better choice in 2020, or go for the SE for longevity?
if you want to buy the series 6, i say go ahead cause its jammed pack for all good features. But if you're wanting to save money, maybe go for Series 5 or even 4 because it's more or less the same but without that Oxygen sensor. I'm also guessing you can just buy the solo loop and put it on your series 5 if you wanted to, saving you heaps of money in the process
Rene - any plans to do a video on the U1 chip this year? More than AirTag stuff: I want your thoughts on how U1's in every Apple device can make things even more seamless. What about an Apple TV remote or HomePod that knows which user is operating the TV based on the U1-inclusive watch or phone nearest to it; that kind of thing.
Sleep tracking is very disappointing. And the speed of medical approvals is disgraceful, still waiting for our local medical approval agency to approve the ECG functional. As for recharging, it not difficult to take the watch of for charging while having a shower or when you’re in some down time in the evening. The big issue is for people that are using the watch during endurance events where the watch is basically useless after the first day in the wilderness
I held out for series 4 & 5, but I finally gave in and ordered the 6. It’s going to be quite an upgrade from Gen 0!

Ok when he fell i died laughing...ik that’s wrong but it caught me off guard
In Australia, we still don’t have the ECG functionality. It’s ridiculous!
i think apple should release features as wellness feature first and slowly roll them out as medical features in updates
Personally I can’t see anything in the Series 6 that would motivate me to upgrade my Series 4.
Blood oxigen is fine but i think another sensor would be great and cheap as well like a thermometer with iR Light would be great
Stan Raufzeil I look forward....
Am I the only one that wouldn’t mind heavier or thicker devices - everything from Watch to MacBook - in order to get longer lasting batteries?
The new Apple Watch S6 battery is so much better than the S5 and with the inclusion of ARM CPUs in future Macs battery life will improve heavily without compromising on weight and thickness.
Whatever it takes
I’ve had my series 6 since launch and a s4 previously, it’s battery is bigger than the s5’s and the battery life is better than what I was getting on the s4. All this while being thinner than the s5.
Blood Sinned Is the S6 battery life still better than the S4 with always on display enabled?
Nobody needs another 5W charging brick!
Still have the Series 0... finally upgrading to the series 6.
Apple has taken their next step in ‘Find My!’
Having the interview on the watch was brilliant! Really cool way to make the low res zoom talking head more engaging
I charge my S4 stainless when I take my shower, that is usually enough.
Where to get one cheap?Thanks
bought mine series 5 at iwatchclone, com its better than apple 6 so overrated
yeah me too and im obsessed with it
These comments and replies are a scam. Beware
Just got my 44mm s6 a few days ago. This is my first one and I love the integration and control of the apps I use on my wrist is very convenient and makes this a satisfying purchase. I work in construction and I'm glad that my bumper case and screen protector come in tomorrow.
Thank you for taking people without Apple Watch to account, most of the reviewers concentrating on differences
I'm trying to get better about that!
Rene Ritchie O, f**k you replied))) I love what you are doing man! Some times I watching your show just because I like this good vibe, even if I am not interested in product)
I didn't have an apple watch until yesterday and i got the product red series 6.Loving the experience.
My first Apple Watch series 6 Redd Aluminum. It’s got it all.
"Like a kid piping way too much custard into a donut."
👌🏽 😂 😂
Sticking to the series 4. Good with that one. Let’s see what the series 7 is all about
I wish I had your control
Why don't you talk about the family setup ?? one of the features you want most on the apple watch !! this allows an apple watch to be independent.
08:17 is definitely the new „I’ve fallen and I can’t get up“ meme
Great review. I would love to know what do you think about apple eliminating on watchOS force touch. I think it worked great on the watch. For example, now to delete my notifications i have to swipe to the top in order to delete all the notifications, with force touch I used to press and delete all in less than one second!!
Swipe? Just turn the wheel for about half a turn. Takes no time at all. Yes, I miss force touch as well. But it was never a good UI experience in that you had to guess whether a force touch might be required to find a hidden feature. So there was good and bad about it.
Patrick Armbruster agree with you, it might be confusing for a lot of people, but i think turning the wheel in this case is a worst solution
I must be the weird outlier - my Series 4 lasts me about 60 hours or so per charge. 2 and a half days per full charge
Same here
Anything which is a display upgrade is a reason to upgrade for me...so series 6
I really feel like the step up from aluminum to stainless steel is like going from a sport watch to straight up jewelry that happens to also function as a smart watch/sport watch. Very worth it.
This year stainless steel
First time ever got a Apple watch and went for the Nike series 6
Leave it to Rene to somehow connect a gold Apple Watch to Star Trek Deep Space 9. Lol.
My Apple Watch series 3 is a bit over 3 years old and it still last me about 3 days! It’s battery life speaks for itself.
I upgraded from a series 2.
is a screen protector necessary???
I just wish the aluminum gold color was actually gold vs rose gold. I tried the aluminum gold and it was just way too heavy for me.
Love it!
I have noticed some serious watch battery issue since Watch os 7.0.1
Hey there - can you turn off the always on display feature?
Long time fan here and appreciate your steadily improving reviews Rene but this type of review is what I and others need. You have slowed down and the level of professionalism you have always demonstrated with your interviews ,keeps me coming back. Your emphasis on the the health and fitness benefits makes the argument for me to upgrade. Thanks again
DS 9 reference! Nice
Had to!
I’m always getting water in my watch and it’s always locking my watch. And I think it ruined my screen…
Any comments on the benefits of the stainless steel version compared to the aluminum?
Is there any change in shape on watch 7 ? ! Or can I go with watch 6 ? ! Please tell ! •
Iron Man, Rescue, DS9... super-geeky today!
Had to!
Rene is amazing. I’ve only recently discovered his channel. I’ve spent many hours watching much of his back catalogue
True fan here Rene. ❤️😘
Your reviews are different that's why I like them
Much appreciated! Hope it helped!
I have ser 4 and I returned my Ser 5 because I didn't notice anything different now I got the ser 6 and I am feeling the same way .. Considering returning it its very hard to justify as always on does not seem that big of a deal.. None of the other features seem to go unnoticed.
May I ask if the Battery is better than series 5? Thank you.
this is my first Apple Watch. never really cared for the Apple Watch but I thought I’d finally try it out.
Great review!!
I wonder which size of leather link to order. Do you have a S/M or a M/L?
How long are the two straps?
My mom and I are about to get an Apple Watch for the first time series 6 it’s been time for me to finally get one since the series 4
Since the series 4 smh.
So So it’s gonna be the same watch I have the 4 I’m waiting till the 7 come out it’s nothing new on there lol
I have a series 3 and I have a lot of health problems with my immune system and my heart is now what the doctors are looking at so this new watch with all the new features like blood oxygen and ECG are super impressive and definitely something I want. It’s a shame I can’t afford it but I’m going to save up and try to get it!
How are you doing FaceTime video on Apple Watch?
Ive been deciding between the 6 and sse. The big difference for me is the always on but I can't really see how useful it is.
Pepper wears rescue armour
Toby Spidey - that’s a cute outfit....did your husband gave it to you?
Stark - yes
Mcu Peter--- doooooooplegangerrr
But would Steve Jobs be Proud Af ?
Rene - any plans to do a video on the U1 chip this year? More than AirTag stuff: I want your thoughts on how U1's in every Apple device can make things even more seamless. What about an Apple TV remote or HomePod that knows which user is operating the TV based on the U1-inclusive watch or phone nearest to it; that kind of thing.
man, this video is the best i have ever seen, you made me for the first time in my life to want to have my very first apple watch!!!! congrats!!!
